Darkfall should be MUCH higher. That and Eve share the MMO of the year for me. They are the most unique and challenging MMOs out right now that real fans of the genre should be playing.

Congrats to CCP Blizzard and Turbine I think this poll is a testament to the true state of mmorpg's no matter what the vets on these boards try to say.   For as bad a game as SWG is Star Wars is still a truly powerful ip to get Galaxies in such a high spot on this list (not sure the folks are voting for the love of SOE as much I could be wrong though.)  Blizzards polish counts for more than the rest of the mmorpg community will ever let themselves believe and Turbine continues to chug along with LOTRO.

but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

You have to realize that most the people playing EvE are surfing the internet and have plenty of time to participate in a poll like this. I for one had no idea they even did a poll because I was so busy actually playing a different mmo.

"I'm sorry but your mmo has been diagnosed with EA and only has X number of days to live."

Eve gives you the choice to play it AFK. HoweveriIf you want to play it like it was any other mmo then it allows you.

I really enjoy EVE Online, and I really enjoy WOW. However, this poll only reflects this particular's sites "favorite game".

The poll can only say that the majority of people that voted were EVE fans.

This could be for a variety of reasons.

    Currently Play: ?
Occasionally Play: Champions, Pirates of the Burning Sea, WOW, EVE ONLINE

Really...EVE won game of the year....really?   EVE is good, but come on last year EVE was a mess with the lag and the bugs.   EVE won game of the year?   Really.

::sigh::  This genre is just not going anywhere.    It has stagnated.   Shame...it had such a promising outlook.

WoW caught a lucky #2. Lucky in terms of releasing the shameless Activision-ripoff aka Copynpasteclysm late last year. By the end of this year people will think twice to vote it GOTY again.

I guess Lotro would have fought around the 2% too -guess the F2P move kept it floating.

And WTF is going on on 4th place? I don't mean that Wiz101 is a bad game (uhm..) -but where is AoC? WAR? Aion? All the supposed to be big titles of the companies who went out to save the gaming world? Shame on those, even being left behind by SWG.

Not long ago we would have predicted to see a race between titles like TR, Fallen Earth, TCOS and such for the top 5 of 2010. This poll is a grotesque spitting image of some unable big mouth companies that woke up with empty pockets (= 1.x% of 100 players left to vote for them), face down in the mud after celebrating itself too much the years before. All that waste of bandwith crawling below the 2% (!!) mark should be shut down for good already.

Oh boy, I only hope we will see a real battle of the upcoming games end of 2011.

I hear you.  In two years SW:ToR and Tera and Rift will be the Aions,DF's, and AOC's.    These game companies keep churning out regurgitated garbage year after year.   They all play it safe and try to stick with the same old same old.    Well the same old same old is old - tiring and borish.    That is why newer games are just flashes.   Good for a few months until you realize you've been duped once again and are just playing your old game wrapped up in different ribbons and bows.

I'm afraid you are right on with this one. Rift is hence the first mmo for years i'm not going to preorder/headstart/initial 6 month sub.

But then it's also very hard for the gaming companies to do it right. Recent years have shown that players aren't quite able to get used to or accept anything they don't already know from some other game (like combat mechanics, ingame objectives, sometimes even a strange lore may alienate some). Otherwise, if companies serve them something which is even slightly familiar, people cuss "WoW clone" allover the forums.

    Edith:

I'm still waiting for your cata-review in your blog. You're one week late already ;)

Tells you a lot more about the rest of the genre than Eve.

And yes, the genre have stagnated but it seems like a few games try to change that finally, like CCPs World of darkness online and some others.

Lets hope that the next award gets a new and interesting game as a winner (nothing against Eve, good game but for a already old game to win the same  award 3 years in a row would tell me the genre is not well).

This right here is exactly why this game (and most of the MMORPG polls) have the results they do.

There is a strong Blizzard/WoW hating group at MMORPG, and this is to be expected.  The Blizzard Forums are HUGE, and the people who care about that game use those forums and have no need for others.

MMORPG is a place for ppl who have no single quality game to call home.  Most of the smaller titles or failures that people do call home have either a very small or non-existant offical forum.

I've given EVE multiple chances to impress or be "fun" for me but the spreadsheet style gameplay is just bad.  Any game that encourages offline play (log out for weeks while you auto-skill) is just bad in my book.

Fallen Earth was very similar to this, you queue up hours... even days of crafting and then log out and play something else.  There is a reason people come and go from these titles so quickly when compared to other titles such as EQ, WoW, DAOC, and such.

I LOVE SCI-FI and I have high hopes for Jumpgate, the new Starwars, or any other attempt to get away from dried up sword, shield, and elves.  Unfortunately the LARP community refuses to put on spray painted tinfoil and lazer beam swords, so the basement virgin community drives the MMORPG market will continue to lean towards Human and Elf clones.

Oh yes by far EVE deserves this Award... Gratz to my favorite game of all time...

Personally I think Shakes and Fidget deserves all the 2010 titles :P

    Grats to EVE

Yeah, I have been working on it.  It's really long.   Trying to make sure I cover all the important stuff.   I have 3 level 85's, but the Shaman I will not get there unfortunately...I am so sick of Cataclsym all ready I find it more and more difficult to log in.    I did some new stuff like a Goblin...for a bit, then I thought taking a hot poker to the eyes would be more fun.   Good for me a friend stopped me from doing that.   :(    Now I still see images of Goblins in my brain from time to time and it sucks!~

    Anyway...soon.

eve?  Seriously?  They musta had a campaign to get votes on their forum.  Spreadsheet in space.

  • Bozo256Bozo256 Member Posts: 74

I notice that people tend to focus on one small area of the game that they don't like as if it is the whole of EVE.  I've been playing for 4 years now, and I have yet to touch an EVE related spreadsheet.  It's so much more than spreadsheets online.  And you do -not- have to go into industry to be financially sucessful.

IMO I think everyone that's complaining about the state of online gameing needs to log off their computers, put the mountain dew down, crawl out of your mom's basement and go outside.

  • Why are people surprised older games fare well? They have years of added content (hell, EVE was awful for the first two years), years of dedicated fans, a lot of expansions, and improved performance all around.

I would surprised if an MMO newer than three years old was worthy of consideration to be honest.

  • sn0wblind00sn0wblind00 Member UncommonPosts: 388

Eve wins many online polls and has a very active (and defensive) forum community as you can spend much of your 'gaming time' alt-tab'd.

  • abramasadaabramasada Member Posts: 17

why does eve win ...because there are alot of ppl that come to this website looking for news of good online games..just a sneaking suspicion but i bet there are alot like me that have been looking for several years and are not real satisfied with whats available.

i have been playing the great spreadsheet off and on for 5 years because other games are lacking. the bulk of WOW lovers dont need the depth of the spreadsheet and i see them coming in second. and you have LOTR 3rd.

out of bordom i downloaded LOTR yesterday and if this is what ppl want  gaming is dead to me .

WOW clone setup . uninstalled  in less time then the download took.

so i guess my point of bothering with this is "hey WOW kids tone down the flameing that anything  is close to your beloved medeocre standard lowering 5 year old highwater mark of gaming"

bah why i bother wow is to MMOs as DOOM was to RPGs.

Oh I get outside plenty.   I ride my mountain bike every day - when there is not a foot of snow on the ground.   I also run stairs in the local stadium twice a week - have to stay fit.   So I get out plenty.

If we complain about the state of games its because they are trash.  Look at what we've seen come out lately.  MMORPG's is a dying genre.    It is slow...but it is dying.    All we get these days are games calling themselves MMORPG's -  Tank World!  APB!  Hell  even EVE is less than an RPG now and more of spce flight sim since player characters no longer have stats.  Once Incarna comes it'll be Sims(with out the cool things to do) in space tacked onto a space flight simulator and even then the space flight sim is not really all that much of sim since the physics of EVE breaks most laws of physics.    So what is EVE ... its a game about micro management.   It could be more....but alas the developers like their game for what it is.  Cool.  It's just not for me.   I played it long enough to know it'll never be anything more than what it is.

MMORPG's have fallen into a rut.   All these game companies see WoW and say...well...Blizzard redefined the market - so lets be like them and make our game based on their design.    Sadly because of this - we're stuck with WoW wannabe's.   Hell even GW2 is still a WoW wannabe, but without all the cool things WoW offers - like mounts!   I have watched the vids of GW2 and I am not impressed.   It is just more stupid silly go fetch quest and kill X # of quest.    Plus it is all about leveling up and getting gear.   That's another thing that really annoys me...all these games coming out are gear centric.    Really?   As if gear wasn't the rage back in the day, not it is moreso than ever.   Gone are the days when we explored gaming worlds.   Gone are  the stories we just happend across and became a part of.  Gone are the games where players were the story and the world was our sandbox.   Now it is all about quest hubs, quest lines, zones, instances and gear.

These game companies wonder why WoW is so successful - because those game companies are not smart enough to be different and when we players see  that all that new game is is WoW wrapped up in a different package - we toss up our hands and just keep playing WoW.

I'm not talking about the DF's and FE's here.   They are different...they have a whole lot of their own problems - to manyto go into now.

Anyway...it is truly sad that this genre is stagnating.
