PvP I find to be the more converisal subject of all of MMOGs. Ive talk to people from both sides who dont like pvp and absoluately love it. There have been some interested in my part to go and try pvp games. However from my talks with people who played pvp they all come to the griefers. Griefers who solely and only are out there to just kill people, they dont do it for a sense of lore.
I know that theres alot of games under production now that have a point to pvp, that is they have sieges on towns, villages, castles, and such. That I think would make pvp very interesting and it brings a new element to MMOGs. At times I would like to go and hunt monsters, do quests, and other things besides seiging. If all pvp MMOGs would have an "off" feature to their games so players who do choose to send a few hours killing monsters can do so with out being feared with being ganked by a group of griefers.
How would companies who are making pvp games expect to bring in new customers with the griefer problem? I know that games do have penalties for players who kill other players. Even these penalties doesnt seem to slow down griefers. Ultima Online put in very stiff penalties and nothing happened. This is going back to the "off" feature, if companies were to allow that feature then Im sure griefers would be very limited.

In WoW, u have to type /pvp to participate on non-pvp servers in pvp. There are other variables that will flag u for pvp as well, but it is pvp on your own terms none the less.
DAoC does pvp very well, too. they have a realm vs. realm (rvr) where you can pvp with other players from apposing realms (3 sides) only in certain areas of the game world.
hope that helps.

Personally I don't think game mechnics are that much to blame for people not wanting to PvP. The 'problem' is two-fold. Firstly there is safety in numbers - most griefers will only attack soloers or low level groups not amassed forces (at least in a grief fashion). Unless you completely remove the bonus for teamplay, this can only be solved by player playing good guys, devoting time and effort to combat the griefers - in my opinion this happens far too rarely (at least in the MMO I played, Eve), players instead try to whine and moan to get the game changed to be safer.
The second issue is that there seems to be a psychological issue about losing to a human player. If the AI beats you, fair enough, if a human beats you the mind automatically tries to come up with excuses (at least if you have a superiority complex) - this in turn leads your mind to believe certain items are more powerful than they actually are, and call for nerfs. Player v Player will always be more emotionally draining than PvE.

PvE in general is pretty lame, if you think long and hard about it. You are spending your time beating a severely gimped AI that would lose to a well trained monkey. Best not to think too long and hard why you are wasting time playing games in general actually...
I'm pretty new to playing MMORPG's and haven't played a PvP game yet. I'm looking forward to trying DnL and maybe Darkfall.
I'm playing EQ2 at the moment and don't understand all the people asking for PvP in that game. I don't see how it would add anything to the game. It seems to me that PvP should have some point and the game should be built around it, not the other way around.
I support Belgiums efforts to get noticed ... at all.
Take out the level system.
Okay, 2 things.
A) Attend english class every once in a while.
Why would you write such a...I dont know what to call it (paragraph?) when the top game in your xfire sig is a game built on player vs player combat?
That wouldnt do any good. If a griefer is dedicated enoguht to reach a high enought level, then they will probably also be dedicated enought to train there skills so that they have an upper edge anyway against lesser experienced players. (Im talking about real experience in playing the game, not accumulating experience by doing missions).
The questions is how real you want the game to be. If you want a real game then there shouldnt be any restrictions to pvp, but there could be consequences like the griefer being killed by a guarding AI trooper or something like that.
There are games now that dont have any level system. Darkfall is one of those games under production that will not have it. Two fairly newbie players could actually have a chance in winning against a player who been around a while.
However, if there is a level system they need to have a cut point, maybe two levels, so that someone cant kill anyone who is two levels under him. I know that griefers dont want to ever fight someone who is at the same level as they do. They will normally run if one shows up.

Then quit being a whining pu**y and do something about the griefer, besides trying to get him banned.

Just a clearification: Iam not whining about griefers. I was just stating facts.

Does WW2 online have a level system?
Didnt CS is enought for you? Many shooters out there have no level system, and sorry, I will never play those for long myself.
