I was reading through some MMO news and noticed this article:
http://news.mmosite.com/content/2011-01-14/amazing_only_3_days_level_cap_of_tera_conquered,2.shtml
Not saying much about TERA as a game, as I know very little about the entirety of its features, this struck a cord with me as many players on this site feel that after reaching cap, the game is downhill from there and involves little to no longevity without alternate time sinks.
Personally I don't feel this to be a major problem as TERAs gameplay looks pretty fun, and I could only imagine that the enjoyment of playing will increase longevity of the game on top of the other game play options, but what do others think? Thoughts?

We should wait for release before making conclusions. This is an Open Beta so the leveling speed might be accelerated. Also the max level in OB is only 38. It will be 50 I think for release.
Yea its pretty had to make judgement when there is not even a NA/EU version yet. Experience tells me that there will always be people who rush thru the game and max out asap so they can yell first! Time will tell after all the game is only what you make it.
i would rather the leveling go by quick than take forever by grinding all day.
Maybe the game will have exciting endgame content and since leveling is quick most of the world will be open and max level.
I always hated leveling in themeparks and only having one or two high level zones.
Playing: Rift, LotRO
Waiting on: GW2, BP
I rather do quests, (the red ones) because it sure looks interesting with all the cutscenes. There is actually stories, but I don't understand korean...
It honestly comes down to the player... We have no Idea how long that guy was playing per day. The average person goes to work or school and plays maybe a couple hours per day if they're lucky. For all we know this guy was playing 18+ hours a day non-stop I mean its typical for them to do so, what else are they gonna do?
I mean look at WOW you can max lvl in a week and some how it's still the leading mmo. I just hope for some killer pvp and I could care less how fast I max out.
-The game gods have taken my soul, and I cant get it back.
This guy play with friends and grind 24/7, he is a basement nerd without a life so yes is normal for people like him.
There is no way that a NORMAL player like me with the actual exp ratio will do the same in 3 days. Also the level cap in release will be 50 not 38.
I guess a normal players will be able to cap 50 in 1.5/2 months that is ok even if i think is a bit over the top.
XP isn't accelerated for OBT, also it is likely that hitting cap for a casual player is going to be a month or so, this puts in line with other MMOs due out this year (Rift, DCU, etc).
^ This.
Lets not forget the fact the game is being tested, has not been released and is still going through trial and error of discovered bugs. I wouldn't doubt that they might have boosted the exp gain for testing.
They haven't, this is a Korean OBT, a soft launch.
Well, lets keep in mind he did say he only slept about 4 - 5 hours a day, over 3 days, that leaves him 60 hours of play time to reach max level.
Lets say someone only plays 3 hours a day, it would roughly take them 20 days. So as a casual game, I could definitely see it lasting the entire month long.
Holy Mackeral.
So if these players really played cooperatively and hard at reaching Open-Beta level cap within a few days without the game-play experience mechanics being sped-up, this is pretty remarkable, no? Usually Open-Beta is more like than dislike launch, for mmo's, from my experience. I hope the leveling curve isn't that shallow.
Granted, I am looking for more experienced folks that have knowledge about this game to chime in here, but I do appreciate a mmo that requires some engaging game-play effort in order to advance and accomplish character development.
You also have to bear in mind this is some sad Korean who was probably in CBT knows a few sploits and has played 72 hrs straight.
Well 72 hrs to me is like 2 months worth of gameplay.
The level cap in beta is 38, it will br 50 in Korean release within days.
I have really limited palytime due to extreme pileup of work, so only been able to play a few hours - about 12 last week and i got to lvl 15.
This game is based on skill. So if you are skillful you can levelup much faster than average joe. Average joe wont be able to kill mobs 3-4 levels higher than him without major breaks for regaining life/mana. Good player will be able to kill 2-3 levels higher mobs without breaks. But really skill full dude can beat 4 level higher mobs and don't stop much. And higher level mobs mean more exp faster.
Also if you are familiar with the working of game you can exploit repetable quests.
Those work different than usual. You can take repetable quest to kill 10 treeants, but after you kill 10 the counter doesnt stop, so you can get to 100/10, and turn in the repetable quest 10 times. That can help minimize travel times between spots and questhubs.
Personaly i would prefer to do each quest once and get throught the story, espececialy campaign quests which give nice cinematic here and there. Unfortunately my Korean only allows me to distinguish yes from no. OK! I'm lying, i dont even know that I only know that the left option is yes and the right option is no Eventhough the game is pretty fun!

This game is getting less interesting day by day...
A quests treadmill... check
Fast leveling... check
Gear hamster wheel... remains to be seen. ( that would be the nail in the coffin for me )
Two out of the three things I can't stand in todays MMO's are confirmed to be in.
/sigh
My thoughts exactly.
I've never equated long leveling with fun. I may be missing something...
I understand the hatred of grinding out long levels, but if you make leveling really quick and easy so players can get to the end-game content, which seems to be something that is becoming more and more of a trend, then I wonder what point there is in having "levels" at all. Why bother creating low- and mid-range level content when your goal is to have players hurry right on past it as quickly as they can so that they can get to the "real" part of the game (high-level open world PVP, raiding dungeons, or what have you).
Personally I wouldn't mind seeing a MMORPG that has no leveling. I think the Monster Hunter series has done a good job of showing that you can remove leveling and still retain that feeling of character advancement that is so important to any RPG.
Hardy, the cornerstone of any MMO is progression.
I agree totally. It was a story, and you gained skills, and some other MMO goodies Monster Hunter would make a great MMO. I really like that is mostly about skill and not all gear based. When you remove leveling you replace it with the next challenge and that can progress the game. Not saying leveling is bad but a game were you didn't would be a nice change.
Yeh stupid me was thinking the fun was gonna be in the semi sandbox politcal system or the real time action style combat PvP. Stupid us, it suppose to be in the grind.
