Level 13 and struggling

LeetheLeethe Member UncommonPosts: 893

Hi everyone. I made this thread in an effort to find out if I'm doing this wrong. I pre-ordered DCUO and I do not regret it. It is a good game with, possibly, the best most atmospheric urban setting that I have ever seen. I seriously hope the environment guys got a hefty bonus because their work is nothing short of spectacular.

The problem: I have a level 13 toon on the pve server atm and I find that I'm getting bored of fighting all the time. Is there anything to do in the game besides fight? I say this as a long-term MMO player. I never rush to the endgame: It took me 4 years to get my 1st level 50 in CoH. I like to stop and smell the roses and explore a bit. DCUO is great for that but as all I see is city, that's starting to where a bit thin. I know that crafting was mentioned but has there been any word as to when and in what form it will take?

Currently, my main motivation for playing is seeing what the next costume drop will be (sad, I know!).  I'm beginning to think my playstyle isn't epic enough for MMOs.

There is NO miracle patch.

95% of what you see in beta won't change by launch.

Hope is not a stategy.

Thankfully (im thankful anyways) SoE says there wont be any crafting in the game.

This isnt your typical MMO and a lot of people argue that it doesnt even belong in the category.

Its a brawler, and in my experience there isnt anything outside of questing/fighting to level up.

OK, fair enough. Short sweet and to the point. You're right it is a brawler. The thing is I actually find the combat fast paced enough to keep me interested. I'm a big FPS fan so it's right up my alley. Like an FPS unfortunately, I find that I log in, fight and logout.

As far as being an MMO is concerned, upon relfection I can understand why some may dispute it but MMO is a big enough idea to fit DCUO inside of it. Anyway, you're right. this game really isn't for me in the long-term. :(

I'm level 13 too and getting a little bored of fighting. I think it was my choice of 2h hammer. I also feel I don't have enough energy EVER to use my abilities enough to have fun. The first few levels were fun because I could blast each mob once or even twice and not fall behind on energy. Now if I use more than 1 power every other mob I'm usually gonna fall behind on energy.

I think I would have more fun using martial weaponry but it's hard to get motivated to start over even though I'm only a day or 2 in.

I feel the same way, i played FPS games years ago and get bored of them fast. I didnt play them for years and when i picked them up again not too long ago i enjoyed them again.

Our gaming moods change, im assuming im not the only one this happens to. :p

It can be long term without a "hardcore" play style.

I get you. I tried martial wepons in beta and the are a heap of fun. I'll roll a ranged toon tonight and see what that's like but I'm a bit meh at the idea of starting over. What the heck is wrong with me? It's only a few days in.

The only other thing in the pipeline close to crafting will be the broker system which is currently broken.  A recent interview stated that is their first priority to bring up, and may likely be fixed in the first update.  I get tons of gear drops that I don't need so being able to sell to other players would be ideal, especially since trade for some reason isn't working properly.

Other then that,  combat starts getting more complex as you gain levels, with the introduction of roles and what effects they have on the powers you have.  It will also change the flow of how many abilities you can use before your power bar is spent, etc.

It's true, I think my gaming does go through moods as well. I'm really looking for a world I can lose myself in for a while. DCUO isn't shallow, I just think my MMO needs may be too deep for it.

There is quite a few things to do. Remember that achieves (nerd points) actually count for something here. Do all the races you can, pvp alot, do all the investigations you can find, find world bosses or do instances. The more achievements you get the more skill points you can get. Sorry there is no crafting in this game and honestly I am glad. This is not a crafting style MMO. Also I would just like to comment on how redicules the definition for MMO is getting. I can understand MOBA games like league of legends not being an MMO because you can only play with up to 9 others at a time (two teams of 5 in a versus match), but DCUO is an MMO nowhere in Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game stipulates auto attack, grinding, profession building, auction house watching, snooze fest..... does it? DCUO is a massive multiplayer online role playing game and meets that very definition as a matter of fact I find better role playing atmosphere in DCUO then many other classic construct MMOs such as rifts.

Most of that revolves around the combat system,  and I think he's saying he isn't really interested in combat all the time.  I can understand that,  but this is a primarily combat oriented game.  While some additional things may be added later,  its doubtful they'll be any more than just an addition to the combat and physics system.

I know it doesnt solve the "tired of fighing" problem...but if you are tired of the same scenes...try doing some "Alerts" which are just another name for their dungeons.  At 30 you can start doing the "Raids" which are just higher difficulty dungeons. :)

Those were the most fun I had in Beta, I had 3 level 30 characters and burned out on the game back then....honestly not enough content for me to keep me going but it was fun while it lasted.

If this game was free to download and 15$/month it wouldent be bad....but right now to pay $50 plus 15/mo or whatever it is for about 3-4 weeks of enjoyment is not really a good deal imo.

OK that sound good. I also have tons of drops, some really good, that I don't know what to do with so getting an economy going would be great. I't funny that the last 3 MMOs I've played all were missing a AH on launch. Odd.

I've played around with roles a bit. My dual wield/fire tank is liking the extra defnse but I assume it's not a roile bursting with energy? Annoyingly, at level 13 I've already managed to fill up the action bar so it's off to 'modify my exobyte data' ans pick a few more innates and an iconic. I'll keep at it and see of my powers don't open thing up a bit more.

PS: Thanks for all the helpful responses so far.

The problem is that you just named the problem with MMO games when all you want to do is get to max level.  Everyone races to the top then gets mad when there is nothing to do there at the moment, but didn't take the time to enjoy the journey or in this case the story.  I like how they have put several comic book storylines in the game thus far and am looking forward to the updates.

Have you done the Booster Gold missions?  I find them fun and interesting.  They have you fly around the city and give you comic book lore for different world locations.  Have you done the races?  They are similiar to crack-down.  The first one is very easy, but they do get much harder.  At level 13 you should have at least 3 race difficulties available to you.    Have you gone searching for all the blue exclamation points?  What about the green or gold ones?

At level 13 you can do Area 51.  Yes it is combat related, but did you try it out doing your new role?  Some of your powers change.  Most of the PUGs I have run everyone is just in damage role.  It doesn't look like many people know how ot switch role.  Healers have much more options in healer role, and Controllers can give mana/power back to healers.  I don't see this happening often though.  Also, after you finish Area 51 be sure to fly around the full zone to get the exploration achievement.  There are some hidden treasure crates, blue exclamations, etc in the zone.  Grab them up.

All those blue, green, and gold orbs add up to extra skill points you can use.  Go out and explore and don't forget to do it in your alerts either.  Same goes for races.

Thanks for that. lots of good suggestions. the races seem strange to me but I'll give them a go. I use acrobatics and i was wondering what sort of travel powers to get. I'll have a look and see if i can find one to make me a bit faster. I already have the 'rocket' glide thing so I can get around easy enough.

Roles make sense to me as I'm used to switching back and forth between them like I do in CO. It would be nice if I could find a good contoller to kep our energy up but we'll see. Definitely like the whole 'search for loot' thing. I was waiting until I was a bit more familiar with the game mechanics before I tried an Alert but now is a good time as any. Thanks for the tips.

I think this is a bit like looking for depth in a Dynasty Warriors game. That's not what it's there for. It's really just some mindless fun to play here and there when you want to feel epic, or powerful, or are just bored. From my short beta experience, that's what DCUO is. I don't agree with people that say it doesn't belong in the MMO category, but I can understand where they're coming from. I think they're just doing a bad job of articulating it.

It may eventually have the depth of more traditional MMO's, but that seems contradictory to what its original goals were. It's trying to be its own thing, which is admirable in a way. You have the storylines, the people to play with, the teams/guilds/equipment like every other mmo, but otherwise you're just bashing and smashing until you get bored and go do something else.

    1) -  flying around the city looking for Green / Blue / Gold ?'s too pass the time, they dont add exp "I believe" but it just distracts yourself from combat, plus you get to explore

    2) - doing the Flight timed missions, getting platinum is fairly easy on all, with Supersonic it's a doddle and easy EXP.

    3) - PvP, Legends or 8vs8, always fun and different to do while earning rep items to purchase new stuff.

    4) Finally........ alerts! probably the best fun, although it is combats, gotta love Area 51 / gorilla island.

These are some of the stuff I enjoy doing while exploring / doing quests.

Also aiming for FEATS, the solo content in hideouts, no KO's, No Consumables, ect ect.

    - Just to edit someones previous post regarding Alerts

    Area 51 - Lv.9+

    Gorilla Island - Lv.13+

    Hive Moonbase - Lv15-16+

And thats as far as I've got.

I did this a lot in Beta.  Didn't end up buying the game because I got bored...level 14 actually.  But I think the game is good.  You have to play DCUO with the right mindset.  You're not going to be going off to craft or collect nodes or anything like that.

This game is very combat orientated.

If you're looking for more traditional style MMO, this might not be the game for you.

What i have learned to do is to space out my powers. I will hit one aoe, then blast them with my weapons for 5-15 combo, then hit another aoe. It works pretty good for My Fire/blaster Tank :) Hope that helps on the power problem.

I look at the reasoning behind not being able to fire your powers off all the time as this. In most movies/comic books your Heroes are running around, fist/weapon fighting while having power uses between them. Like batmans gadgets or supermans heat vision. This is just my opinion however.

Are you a 2-hand hammer? and are you Superspeed? get the drain energy skill and the last skill in the right side of the skill tree for energy. Hammer isn't your typical energy builder weapon class so you have to find other alternatives to get that boost. But what is good about it is that the last smash hit is so strong.

Yup I do love the mega smash it's the only fun thing about my character lol. I went nature to do healing but I never have any energy to heal people with. I've seen sorcery spec players just blow me away in healing. I don't know if it because nature is weak or because I can't build enough energy to cast my heals with.

I'm acrobatics though so I can't take the super speed skill you were talking about. What weapon type is best for energy building?
