Oh, one miss on TERA. I was looking at the TERA photos that MMORPG is hosting with TERA developers. If they read this note, then please ditch the pink dress! /slap realllllly hard!
Regardless of how closely you agree with the article's choices, I have to say this spawned one of the more interesting discussions I've seen here in a while. I read the whole thing, which rarely happens with longer threads. I haven't played many of the top candidates mentioned, but I would like to still try Perpetuum, Vanguard, Ryzom, and Atlantica some day. Of what I have played, I believe that Tabula Rasa, Asheron's Call 2, WAR, and Horizons deserved a better fate. My most 'overappreciated' award would go to Lineage 1 & 2, I tried both, and gave up in mere hours. I also thought Aion was vastly overappreciated, at least at launch, I was bored in beta by the mid-teens.
I agree with other posters that Earthrise should not be on the list.
Also saying Darkfall is hardcore when all you lose is loot and not your avatar is wrong in my opinion, today in the game i am playing i lost my avatar that i had been playing for 5 weeks due to a critical hit from a monster that attacked from off screen, she was built correctly too so that death hurt.
I have tryed most of the games on the list plus other games that people have all ready mentioned but i think i am to burned out with playing carebear / lead me all the time mmo's.
I can see myself stopping playing mmorpgs soon for i just dont like the direction they are taking.
Darkfall is usually talked about for it's PvP, it's mainly unappricated for it's excellent AI and good PvE. There aren't scripted boss fights like other MMO's but mobs, especially higher up mobs, put up a real challenge to even high-up characters and react smartly.
Wow really? Excellent AI?
Not exactly my thought when I realized that monsters will ignore active players attacking them to beat on an incapacitated or low hp one.
Farming mobs is stupidly easy, just have one designated "red shit" player that tanks the mobs by staying low hp, while the other players box it in so it can't reach him.
Darkfall was the disappointment of the decade. (I followed it from October 2002 until beta)
Aventurine needs to sell the game to a competent studio that can fix it, then never touch MMO's again.
Atlantica ins't underapreciated nobody that actualy plays/played it denaies it's unique features. Thing is all are waiting for a p2p simlar game or a f2p one with a less greedy dev.
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former. A. Einstein
A lot of people talked up Vanguard here; so I go to take a look. A website ill designed to attract new players, no obvious link to anything resembling an overview of the game. No obvious link to a video trailer. An overall website which looks like it belongs in the last century (frankly most free to play text-based games have better websites). I actually had to double-check to make sure it was a site for an MMO and not a MUD with a simular name (but I assume Sony doesn't publish MUDs). it feels like pulling teeth to even get a feel for the game. If they can't spend a reasonable effort courting new players, why should I as a player, think they'd spend any effort after getting my coin. I'll pass.
" Every week we here at MMORPG.com focus weekly columns on some of the industry’s most anticipated upcoming games, because we try to offer content geared towards what we think you’d like to read. Whether it’s previews or opinion pieces or news items, we always try to cover as much ground as our small team can. But with four-hundred or so games on the docket, it’s no wonder we don’t get around to spreading the wealth as much as we’d like."
Darkfall has received more attention on this site than many AAA titles and every other indie title combined. It is far from underappreciated coverage wise. Stop trying to push this piece of gargage down our throats. If you want ratings post pictures of naked women. At least have some honesty about what you're doing and a shred of integrity.
Come on man, you completely missed the point of the post. Just because a game gets a lot of attention doesn't mean it's highly appreciated. I think we can all understand that, ESPECIALLY if you've read through the DF forums.
Actually the reason i highlighted what he wrote is because he based part of the list on this sites coverage or lack thereof. Darkfall is a niche game, it was meant to appeal to a very small, very select group of gamers. Its appreciated by its audience and no one else, it isnt "underappreciated". That is also why vanguard doesnt deserve to be on the list. Many people have tried it on many occasions and continnue to find it lacking. It too has had loads of coverage, many chances to turn the boat around. Its failed. It has the population a subpar, bug filled, hack job of a title with no support from $oe it deserves.
Ken Fisher - Semi retired old fart Network Administrator, now working in Network Security. I don't Forum PVP. If you feel I've attacked you, it was probably by accident. When I don't understand, I ask. Such is not intended as criticism.
Vanguard deserves to be on that list, amazing game, bad release timining etc (usual story) but incredible depth of classes, crafting and imo big innovations for an MMO.
I found Vanguard to be very mediocre. Lots of grinds built in, huge world but no one to run into except at the spots known to drop needed gear. Raids were all pretty blah to me, everyone expected to play an exact role instead of actually playing a character. Vanguard to me is not underappreciated, it is simply not that good.
In what other game on the market can you fully loot your dead PvP opponents? In what other game can you build and hold massive wars over player-built cities and keeps? In what other game can you craft and sail and fight with your own player-made ship?
What WAR should have been like too. I mite have to check out Darkfall
I love me some PvE,but latley the dynamic that PvP CAN provide if done right just seems down right fun. and thats what games are missing on is the FUN factor.
Atlantica does turn into a money sink later in the game but it's still a pretty solid MMO. A new MMO called Bloodline Champions is pretty fantastic and you can unlock stuff for free.

Atlantica Online - It's original, very refreshing and quite enjoyable untill you hit the higher levels where the grind starts being ubearable.
A Tale in the Desert - Nice game, the only sandbox that was designed with something that isn't FFA PVP in mind AFAIK. There is no combat at all tho.
But.. have no idea WTF are rest are doing in this list...
Perpetuum Online - A badly done eve-online clone, 90% blatant plagiarism. Nothing to see here, move along
Earthrise - How can an unreleased game be underapreciated? Do you mean underhyped?
Darkfall - Unless you want to "appreciate" ugly graphics, bad gameplay, ungodly UI, or being ganked 20 times in a row right after creating your character - stay away.
I’m not trying to stir a pot here. I know that Darkfall’s not for everyone. But whether you love it or not, as a concept, you have to appreciate Aventurine’s baby. In what other game on the market can you fully loot your dead PvP opponents? In what other game can you build and hold massive wars over player-built cities and keeps? In what other game can you craft and sail and fight with your own player-made ship? Is it buggy? Sure. Is the UI a little archaic and difficult to master? Certainly. Have I asked too many questions within this one paragraph? Absolutely. But you have to hand it to Aventurine. Their game might not be for everyone, but the folks served by it will stand by it vehemently. If it’s something hardcore and unique you’re looking for, Darkfall is certainly worth a peek.
I just thought this was a little funny because the answer to the part in yellow is simple.
UO lol!
You can sail and fight with your own player made ship.
You can fully Loot your dead PvP opponents as well as PvE mobs.
We built large player cities in UO and warred over territory constantly ( Guilds would grief those nearby or barter and trade to get others to move so that another guild house could be placed by them and these tended to lead to some massive battles ) . 100 vs. 100 battles and beyond happened even in the days of dialup lol.
Another funny note worthy thing.... UO likely has a larger player base than DFO XD! It had around 75k subs last I checked and that was back when we were figuring around 20kish subs for DFO.

I don't understand how Earthrise made this list since it hasn't been released yet.
1. AIka
2.perfect world
3. war of angels
4. requiem
5. vanguard
most overlooket games

Fallen Earth should make a list like this for sure.
Under appreciated? This article made no sense to me except that it was a half arsed attempt at plugging a game in development.
I agree with other posters that Earthrise should not be on the list.

Nr 1 Most underappreciated:
Meridian 59,
the true Grandfather of MMo's, way before UO, with an awesome community,
full pvp twitchy combat, greatness and goodness and frantic fun. Genial. Unrepeatable.

I still would say Fallen Earth over and over and over again for this list. Good game overall and they try so hard to improve it and work on it.
Ryzom would be my addition to the list.
Lol I thought I was the only one that felt FF Online should've been more like Atlantica

Perpetuum is EvE with mech basicly.

It does have better graphics than UO does though!
How about Black Prophesy! This looks to be a solid contender in the flying space genre'
I really enjoy Darkfall and im looking forward to earthrise!
