WoW has had to... .. . I WANT VANILLA WILL YOU GIVE IT TO ME RIFT... OH GOD I HOPE SO BECAUSE BLIZZARD IS MEAN AND WILL NOT DO WHAT I WANT... oW flavor and excitement going for it.

YOu know any game that goes up against WoW have to contend with the fact that it is not WoW, the game that turned my quiet little hobby in to a circus. For most people it is the first and best... and like any first love it can never realy be replaced... You have showed clearly the power of nostalgia.

Me i miss my old Guild in UO... No way in heck i want a game like that back tho... ALtho it was nice to be able to hammer the face in on people that annoyed you.

Then again, they used to come back with a lot of friends and hammer you in to a stain... and take all your stuff... and taunt you... Don't miss that.

This have been a good conversation

Rift actually has devs from a few games. But, I agree, Wow has nothing to fear.

Drop the next-gen marketing and people will argue if the game itself has merit.

I have not posted here in a long. long, time. The conversations kind of became the same old same old:

    Fanboy: "Tis the new hawtness"

Anti-Fanboy: "tis not,  tis the new hypeness"

Fanboy: "It is and your biased and stupid!"

Ani-Fanboy: "I know you are but what am I"

Othergame Fanboy: "Nothing will ever reach the heights of other game!"

Anti-Fanboy: "Both games suck it, both are going to die horribly"

Voice of Reason: "Calm down guys, lets just wait and see the actual release before we jump to conclusions."

Fanboys in Unison: "SHUT YOUR FILTHY FILTHY MOUTH  V.O. R! You don't know anything, we are right and your wrong!"

    Voice of Reason: **leaves**

Fanboys in Unison: **FLAME WAR ON!**

Honestly, the beta is supposed to be a way of making the game better before the game actually launches, and as we saw with Tabala Rosa, rushing to conclusions from the beta can kill a game before it even gets started, even if they have made significant changes to how the game plays bedore release.

You cant compare one game against another until it launches, and saying one game is old and dried up Madonna and the other is pre-crazy Brittanny Spears, seems kind of exessive. Comparing the two games at this point is counter productive.

And one more thing: If your in the beta for Rifts, shouldin't you be playing it and giving bug and quest comments, instead of here talking about the beta like its an extended free trial?

Though it's nothing scientific nor anything I can really prove, but it seems to me the hype meter is always decaying down during beta, then it's jumping up once a beta phase ends (so when there are no beta servers available to play on). So I think they are playing during betas, and posting in between phases :P

This is basically how it is going down. They Beta for three days, and then they fix the game and let us Beta for another three days. I doubt very many people see it as an extended free trial. Between betas we post about how awesome the game is. :D

The King doesn't care what kind of plastic surgery Demi Moore gets. She's still an old lady now.

Spit and clothes do no build new shoes.

I'm rubber, you're glue, what you say bounces off of me and sticks to you.

A tisket, a tasket... This game's a WoW-clone. Trying to wish-wash it makes the King sad, but happy in a way. We leaders of men enjoy the easily manipulated.

     Nice.

I especially like "we leaders of men enjoy the easily manipulated."

Unfortunately, the leaders of men are people manipulated by the easily manipulated.

    imho at least.  ;-)

Every single time i see this kind of threads all i think is that in one month the person that started is will start one dissing the game.

Anyone that goes to a new game/restaurant/movie/insert random enterteinment expecting something similar but better to their previously favorite thing is just setting himself for bitterness.

Rift is Rift, just deal with it.

I have found that most of the flame threads start with posts like this thread or a post just as anti like this one.

    http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/303869/Rifts-Hype-Meter.html

Most of it spirals out of control, as people defend or attack said game.  The difference is most of the 'fanboys' use real evidence to defend their game and why they enjoy it.  Most of the anti-game people (at least in this forum) have been using misinformation about the game.  I haven't seen many flames from people who didn't like the game and explained it rationally.  There will be no game that is for everyone and I think people understand that.

My definition of fanboy can't take any critique on the game and I haven't really seen any of that.  I've never said Rift is the most revolutionary game in the MMO universe.  I've said it's fun and believe the technology they're using is next-gen.  Others disagree; which is fine, since next-gen is purely subjective based on the person.

The Beta is only open a few days at a time btw.  It's not a 24/7 open beta.  Another post already mentioned that earlier.

We send in massive amounts of feedback.  The Devs analyze feedback and make massive amount of changes based on our input for next Beta.  I'm not exaggerating.  The game keeps getting better with each event.

    rifts are not repetative

    1. they spawn in different spots.

    2. there are 6 different rift factions.

    3. there are several different actions a rift might do

    4. there are harder and easier rifts depending on the people in the area.

Little reason for alts as almost one class can be everything.

I see this as a good thing. If you make 4 characters on a server you can do everything in the game. Leveling 4 characters to max will take a while though.

Due to the number of souls people will roll on every weapon because one combination of there soul will be able to use it.

There will still be limits to loot. Armor type specific to class restriction. Weapon type class restriction. Right there those restrictions will cut the amount of rollers in half. In other games I have seen character loot rott because people couldn't use it. People will always need gear in this game.

    Tiny zones and small world.

Once again a plus to me. Brings back world PvP and keeps all zones relavent. Once a game gets to big, over half the zones are like a ghost town. And the zones/world are not small.....just right.

While the soul Idea is kinda of cool it will defiantly detract from grouping and make soloing easier, which an mmorpg should not really be about.

Soloing is just as important as grouping in any MMO. There will be plenty of reasons to group in this game including harder quest chains, dungeon runs, tuff rifts and more.

Same starting zones so if you do do an alt, you can to follow the same linear path.

There are two seperate factions and seperate starting locations for each. If you roll the same faction on two characters then yet you will run into the same stuff at the beginning but you don't have to. Also after your character starting area every MMO has the same locations and quests...there is not much getting around this unless you make a huge bloated game where you may never run into hundreds of others on your server since you level up in one area. Talk about isolation. Give me Rift over those other games any day.

But as you said it is pretty.

Rift has great graphics for the type of game it is and the system requirements it has.

A fat bloated mmo to me means its stuffed with tons of options and things to do.

There is a way to have alot to do and then there is overkill. If you don't make your content somewhat re-playable like Rift is doing then you have to have a huge game. Rift is smart by re-using all it's dungeons so you end up getting 10 dungeons while leveling to 50th and then you re-run those 10 dungeons with new content in them and continueing lore associated with them. The whole game is wrapped in a package that allows for easy access. That is important for people who are new to the MMO scene. There is also a level of sophistication to the dungeons and this will keep more advanced dungeon running guilds and players comming back for more. The PvP is already quite good, both in Warfronts and in world PvP and will only get better at higher levels when people get access to higher portions of their soul trees to make more diverse characters with more powers and depth.

Don't discount Rift because she is young. She has a college education and has her own pad.

When I quit WoW, I quit so hard that not even Cataclysm made me come back. I just know it will be a leveling treadmill with a nasty gear grind at the end. I understand all MMOs ahve a gear grind, but it seems like WoW has strayed so far from the fun game it was when it came out.

    Never going back.

Look, the King knows where the angry peasants are coming from.

Just the other day I had a consultation with the Royal Tailor where I had made a humble request for an orange cloak. After deliberation the Royal Tailor and I had an argument that just about ended with his swift and completely justified execution. He was trying to tell me that my choice for a burnt red-orange wasn't orange enough and that his expert eye would suggest the more 20/30 yellow-orange to help accentuate my Kingly features. Clearly he had not received the Royal education that I had and I insisted... Well you get the picture. Then a lovely maid who was cleaning nearby said...

"Good gentlemen, I hate to break it to you but they're both orange."

This wasn't a case of apples and oranges. Just oranges.

Then a bunch of monsters ran in and killed your tailor.  So surprised by the invasion, the king made a hasty retreat out the window leaving the poor maid to her fate.  While standing outside the ledge, the king peered in and yelled "Unfair!  Unfair I say!  For this is not to happen if what the maid says is true."  The king looks down upon his cloak now drenched in blood red, he exclaimed "They're not both orange after all!"

Yep.  The fact that Cata broke the record for best selling box of all time(held by the previous expansion, and the one before it) even before being released to Asia, is just indisputable evidence that the it is nearing the end days.

Expanding and expanding again makes the game lose it's original feel.

Which is a positive in most people's book.  "Boy, I sure miss that bugged game that I couldn't log into during launch."

The game is old as dirt and the subscriber base is itching for something polished and new.

Yep.  They're itching for more expansions.

Rift on the other hand is similar in size to the original WoW before all the bloating and expansions.

Yep.  If there's one thing that drives people out of a game, it's too much content.

In the old WoW you didn't need to go to an arena to find good PvP. There were many locations where pvp was happening all day long with massive and fun battles. Those days are gone from WoW......but with Rift we start fresh.

This is the experiance I think alot of people will have with Rift and the reason why it will do very well. Rift really has that young WoW flavor and excitement going for it.

Something tells me if I copied that last comment into the MMORPG.com search engine, I'd get hits from Aion, FF14, WAR, AoC...  I'm looking forward to necro'ing this thread in 8 months.
