Okay ... how about a little bit more? Did you actually play the game or repeating what you've read somewhere else?

  • KiamdeKiamde Member CommonPosts: 5,820

Some say is is Diablo-esque, but it is not a really original combat system, albeit the game is quite fun. City of Heroes and Everquest II both have the twitch based combo/skill initiate system, as well as dodging.

Guild wars is... Just like any other Asian MMORPG, if you can even call them so. Just like most other Asian MMORPGs, it lacks social content, the freedom to customize your character enough to make it look like your own personal fantasy image of a hero; (No, I haven't forgot about dyes. Jeez, dyes, wow. You can change your clothing color. Big deal.) But generally, in the end, everybody will look the same way. The chat interface is based on area chat, (The whole town will hear what you say, no matter where you stand) trade chat, which encourages people to spam stuff they would like to sell or buy, guild chat and a personal message system. The combat interface is too small (hotkey buttons from 1-8) for over like 50 skills you can get. Generally, outdated. The community is terrible. Nobody gives a rat's head about your person. Roleplay is kept to a minimum (null). Moving in the different country areas is kinda like moving on rail tracks. No jumping, no sliding downhills, no swimming, no way to toggle run/walk (mainly for roleplay reasons). Just one way to go to get from point A to point B. Random PvP arena combat if you are not in a guild. For me, as a long-time roleplayer, I can't say that it is an MMORPG, rather an an MMOG. (Oh yes, there is a difference).

Now, I don't want to completely drag it down, so here are some good points about what Guild Wars is:

Fast and fun gameplay, a virtual graphics firework and amazing scenery, though very static characters. The storyline is interesting and the quest system is easy to understand. The feature to mix your class with another class' skills for maximum efficiency.

But yes, it is more like an old Diablo-type kind of online game. But hey, what can we expect from a pseudo-MMORPG that costs nothing monthly? Stereotype kids, even more nude dancers than in WoW Goldshire (newbie town) and of course no long-term endgame content. I don't regret that I have bought it, but GW is definitely not worth hyping as much as it is on here.

...And that's what Guild Wars is.

Sorry dude, but I can't agree with you there. So let me explain, better yet ask: You know what MMORPG means, right? Massively Multiplayer Online ROLEPLAYING Game. Where exactly do you see any roleplay in this game? Where do you see people forming tight communities, rather than randomly inviting you to their guild?

Guild Wars is absolutely not a game to socialize in, like in real MMORPGs. And like I said in my earlier post, I do not regret buying it, because I can't tell how it is before I try it, correct? I just can't get into it, because it doesn't let me dive into my character with all these people talking about their real life things or how rockin' sexy this nude dancing elementalist up on the hill looks like.

You don't seem to know the difference between MMOG and MMORPG.

I'm finding Guild Wars to be more like NWN than Diablo 2. There are notable differences though. Here's my personal opinions.

Guild Wars doesn't have the sense of community that NWN has when you choose a PW (persistent world).

Guild Wars has a WAY better engine. Remember NWN's ramps?

NWN has the shifter class which so far is my favorite fantasy class of any game I've played so far going all the way back to the early 80's. More fun than a barrel of monkeys. Guild War's classes are still fun but not as unique.

Guild Wars so far seems very large. It does have a quick travel system though much like NWN's caravans on certain PW's.

There's a level limit of 20 right now. Some say that's a big deal. I don't. NWN had the same level limit if I can remember before the expansions, so let's see where Guild Wars goes with theirs. This is only the beginning remember.

As for comparing this to Diablo 2, why? There's no similarities whatsoever. Perhaps the item system is sorta similar, but it's not as robust or addictive as Diablo 2's. Let's face it, the thrill of playing D2 was to find rare items. Other than items, nothing else is similar. At all. Game engine is different, graphics are different, combat is different, skill system is different, characters are different etc.

Diablo 2 is the predecessor of Sacred, not Guild Wars. If anything, NWN is the predecessor of Guild Wars. And that's stretching it. Guild Wars is it's own game. It's damned fun too. If you're an explorer like me you'll be hooked.

You know I remember that in Diablo II people looked the same..... and except for City of Heroes Most people say every MMO has too few options in looking different... Do you really blame them for not concentrating on how you look but how much fun you can have?

Golly, guess they did so wrong... =P

*Sigh* Yes, I can blame them for that. Customizing your character's apperance is part of the fun it adds. It gives you more chances to look unique. And for the last time, Diablo 2 is NOT an MMORPG.

Sorry to mislead, but I said Online Multiplayer Game, the fact that Guild wars is online multiplayer and a game is something that it shares with MMORPGs, like say WoW, hell put in this perspective GW has many thigs in common with Unreal

role playing however could be debatable for any game,

Basically what I was trying to say is Guild Wars is a game,  screw this genre naming and comparisons its just a plain old game

Man I should have wrote that in the beginning the second time made way more sense

And you had to start an entire new topic just to state this? you couldn't use one of the other thousand threads where people whine about gw or something? I dont really get it, if people dont like it, dont play it? Why do all have to whine about it? Do you want people to hold the same opinion as you before you'r satisfied? Or are you just bored and trying to get a hot topic?  As for diablo2 Ive played that for over 2 years so please get a grip and learn when it's important to start a new thread and when it's not.

I still dont see where some of these dweebs get it diabloish only diablosh thing about it is thats its free and it was created by the original people from diablos battlenet. thats it there is no diablo gameplay. Its it own little class of a game doesnt really even play like any other game out there thats what makes it unique. This game is just as much of a MMORPG as any other the only thing thats seperates it from the rest is the free too play and the instanced hunting ground other than that you can still roleplay pvp etc etc sell ya gear. Now ya bunch of lame brains who are complainin and hating on the game please play the damn thing before tryin ta downsize it lol.Its free too play im not sayin it the #1 game in the market. But bein free and not drainin our wallets its damn good.eq2 and wow and them other game still have alot more playability. But gw is a good game to have on the side for when them other game are down for like hours at a time and so on.

Getting aggressive eh? So tell me then, why is it that Guild Wars is listed on the MMORPG site, if you say it is not one of them? Hmm? Well? Now who's the clueless "twit"?

    It's not my opinion. It's a fact.

Hm... I must have forgotten the fun part of GW, cause all I can remember is that it was amazingly boring.

I like it when people use "it's not roleplaying", and "it's not massively multiplayer because it's instanced". Can't say I've seen much roleplaying in any other MMORPG. And massively multiplayer? Even in WoW I've only interacted with maybe 5-20 people at a time. Who cares if there's 5000 more people on the server. They might as well not exist since I'll never actually interact with them. Or take a game like Horizons. Log into that and I bet you won't see any roleplaying or massive amounts of people since there IS no one playing it. Yet that's still a MMORPG.

Why do people feel such an incredible urge to classify or de-classify these games when there are so many grey areas. MMORPG is just a marketing ploy anyhow. Oh oh, if we say our game is MASSIVELY Multiplayer we'll get more idiots to join because of suggestion compared to if we just called it an ONLINE game! I personally think all the MMORPGs should be retitled Online Computer Games. In todays age if it's online it might as well be considered massive and multiplayer anyways. And there's so little role playing in any of the games it seems pretty stupid to have that 'R' in there.

That of course would lead to games like Diablo being in the same classification as WoW. Well who cares? In Diablo if I was playing online I would group with one or more people. Well in WoW I would also group with one or more people, have general chat turned off so I didn't hear the random idiocy, and have a good chance of never seeing another group. Hmm..
