"Falling Sky" cynicism has hit an all time high.

So I am running aorund on my main earlier today on the Public Enemies server, ducking and dodging my way through the throngs of Heroes crowding the Scien Police HQ....digging what is, to me, the most FUN MMO I have played since Everquest was my first love wayyyy back when.

Then, it happens. I see it in chat, and for a few seconds, I'm literally speechless. My onscreen avatar skids to a full stop.

"Well two weeks in and the game's dying already. Server pops are dropping everywhere."

I don't remember the guy's name (maybe, subconsciously, I'm just blocking out the idiot's name to spare myself the grief of forever remembering the source of said stupidity) but there was a brief debate then about how, yesterday, "3 servers had low pops and the rest were medium or high" which was not the case the nights before, or some such scientifically accurate pablum.

Have we really reached that point now? Is everyone such a freaking expert that we can step up and start declaring a game dead based on one night's sampling of players? A game which started with just a few servers and has been steadily adding more? Which regularly has login queues on many servers?

    Nope

It is someone with lots of experience who can judge the longevity of a new MMO by playing few hours.

It is time that people starts to understand that some of us don't have anything in principle against some MMOs but we simply  expect from developers to put more efforts.

That's why we are so ready to point out the flaws and to foresee the doom and gloom well before reality hit the over enthusiastic masses

    We just want better MMORPGs.

    *sigh*  don't listen to him.

Don't worry about what other people say about 'your' game.  Have fun.

I don't like the direction DCUO took, and I'm not playing it, but I hope everyone who enjoys it continues to for a long time.

Ignore the naysayers and have fun, man.

EDIT: couple others posted while i was.  anyway.. don't worry about it

Pretty much. They raised server capacity on Sunday, so what was high is now medium, etc.

Also, as I'm sure you're aware, Tues-Thurs are traditionally WoW guild raid nights. Not saying that there hasn't been some drop off, but I wouldn't worry too much about it just yet.

I expect he's either the type of MMO gamer that surfs the high subscription numbers on game launches (and leaves at the first hint of a slump) or he didn't like the game and wanted to get others to leave with him (because obviously if he can't enjoy it neither should anyone else). Both of them are typical MMO behaviour I've seen over and over again with certain types of players.

It's too soon to judge the player retention of the game so just ignore him.

lol, i sure hope your not talking about anyone here, unless by "judge the longevity of a new mmo" you mean "look at a few screenshots 12 months before the game releases and decide the games going to fail before knowing anything about it."

For me personally, I think I've spent good 15 days (10+ hours a day) playing the game. I've hit 30 on one and 20 on another. So far for me the game feels too difficult, but I know why; b/c I need to get better equip. But about 3 days ago, since school opened, I might have loged in for maybe 3 hours. Today I loged in for about an hour.

I think few things are going on:

    1. School are opening.

    2. People are hitting 30s

    3. Maybe others are finding the game to be difficult just like I am.

When you are an avid MMORPG player and you played MMOs since UO, you can spot a good or bad MMORPG simply by reading the FAQs and the developers interviews.

The Beta will only be the icing on the cake that gives you the chance to confirm or dismantle the theory (I would say rather quickly too).

Hate to say it but if your playing DCUO for the population then i suggest you quiet wasting your time and stop playing now. The game has 2 months with high population tops. Watch youll see,  your playing a SOE cash cow  .Games have changed alot since the original eq. Big buisness realized that MMo's can make lots of money if they change there formula up. So the peeps saying the game is dead are CORRECT . The game was dead when you bought it and we know this because we have played threw it and we know best. ALL HAIL SOE!!!

    2. he probably did notice a decline but it would be because some people are moving to the new servers creating less player density which was exactly what they were created for. 3.  there are probably a few people dropping off here and there but thats nothing to be worried about because thats just how it is with MMOS.  Game comes out, some new players dont like it they leave after a week or two leaving behind what will become the games stable population.

That guy was just trolling you guys

    1) They adjusted server size so what used to be high is now medium

    2) i logged in yesterday and was #49 in line for the Death and Glory server

The game is doing amazingly and it's a best game i have played in my past 6years of MMO's

Newly released mmo's lose a massive percentage of buyers in the first month, if they had huge, huge hype they can paste over this with new recruits but with few exceptions it's pretty much a given subs drop. No matter how much I'm loving DCU atm I have no doubt the same will happen here. I do think having it part of their station pass will helpa lot though in this respect.

Aside from that though DCU is imo a bit of a love it, hate it kind of game which leads to the very polar opinions on forums, this is only emphasised with the help of shills on certain sites. The only way to ever really judge these things, "am I having fun? Then I'll keep playing"

It's easy to be critical of MMO's. We all have that one MMO we love the most and sorta base off what we "really enjoy" from it. Another thing that makes MMO's diffcult to want to play is, you nEEd a mass population to enjoy a MMO for all its worth. I am totally enjoying my time in DC Online, CoH had next to no content and look how that thrived for so long, because it was simply....fun. This game is NOT for hardcore people, at least yet. It's a casual fun experience.

Also think, this is for everyone. But DC needed to make sure it would still captivate its DC fan base that doesn't do MMO's or maybe even video games at all. I have absolutely no faith in SOE after SWG. But for some reason, I am thinking they will expansion this well....I hope

I am having a great time in DCUO, imo it puts you in a universe alongside the iconic characters in a logical and organic manner...it actually achieves a level of immersion and involvement almost every other mmo lacks, exactly as promised on the tin as they say. But on the onther side of the coin there are basic mmo staples it fails at - the only good news there is that these failings are the easier ones to fix, so even SoE has a chance ^^.

EDIT to the op - its a curious personality and maturity defect that some folks don't appear to realise that time spent in a game they aren't enjoying, moaning about how much they aren't enjoying it, could instead be better and more rewardingly spent in some activitiy they actually can enjoy.

I think it's attention seeking behavior.

"I found this one thing that nobody else thinks is an issue and I don't like it. This one thing that I found is going to kill the game! Look at Me! Look at Me!" Or "Look! An indicator of massive failure! I saw it first! Look at Me! Look at Me!"

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

A good MMORPG doesn't lose subs after it's first 30 days bad ones does.

If the game is good you keep playing and paying even after the free 30 days are spent.

Yep, sort of like the OP perhaps? One person makes a statement in a game chat and it becomes a forum topic.

Perhaps both communications were just that, an attempt to open up a discussion and have a conversation about the topic at hand, does DCUO have a declining population?   As noted in this thread, perhaps it is due to a number of factors including opening new servers, people doing other things, all perfect valid for someone to make an observation that perhaps the server they are on isn't as crowded as it was previously when they logged in.

I certainly don't see it as an indicator of a general trend in MMORPG's, but it is understandable that since virutually 90% of all MMO's start out strong and after a few months have a lower population than the 1st month people tend to look for and even expect it to happen to every game.  WOW and EVE are exceptions, and not the rule.

Besides, you said attention seeking behavior like that's a bad thing.... LOL, of course we're all seeking attention, otherwise we'd just lurk like so many readers of these forums do.

It's the media nature that does that to people. Just look at headlines:

"You eat it every day with dinnner and it may be slowly killing you. More at the 7 o clock news"

    Followed by:

7:45pm: "Well, researchers state that people drink milk with dinner, where as there are a lot of people who are lactose intolerant. Just a reminder for those who are lactose intolerant, drinking milk with dinner could be dangerous."

Maybe the rocket scientist just didnt realize that the population indicator means the online pop, not offline pop. If I log on morning it's low, on evening it's high. Who would delete their character if they were leaving the game anyway? Not that it would matter since the online/offline again.
