Everquest 2 or World of Warcraft?

Ultima12Ultima12 Member Posts: 17

Me and a buddy are talking about getting into an MMO.  We are both new to the genre and we both like the fantasy world MMO.  I'm playing DCUO right now and having a blast but I like the fantasy genre a bit better.  We've narrowed it down to either Everquest 2 or World of Warcraft.  I don't care that Everquest is free I just want to play the better game.  I'm a big fan of raids and big tough bosses.

Which one do you guys like better and why??

P.S.  I know this has been talked about for years but I'm just looking for some honest opinions here.

    EQ2 = Better Community

    WoW = Better game

  • xeniarxeniar Member UncommonPosts: 805

    I don''t think i can choose.

I like everquest 2 way more then WoW because of the enviroment the feeling and evrything (it reminds me so much of eqoa wich bring find memories) but i havnt gotten a good grasp on the game because you really need a buddy to hang around with.

WoW on the other hand is completely solo until you get to raiding.I really like the new zones they have a certainly epic feeling leveling there. but once your done your well done.. Im playing wow atm tho but i cant really say why i am.. i just am.

If your bringing a buddy along hands down EQ2  not that the game isnt soloable to lvl 90 (because it is) but with a duo you open up a lot more content options. And as far as Wow being the better game i think thats more of a matter of Opinion  in my opinion Eq2 is the better Game. Better crafting, more content, guild halls and player housing, collection quests (gimme my shinies) lore and legend collections , and the best part of all  to me ,doing the quests actually require a little thought now and then  instead of just following the map marker but again this is my opinion and im sure others dont feel the same.

EQ2 is by far the better game it dosn't get the credit it deserves at all. Just by what you are stateing about raiding EQ2 has the better Endgame and more of a end game then WoW.

WoW is a good game but its very easy it dosnt take rocket science to play the game and the end game is a joke i can close my eyes and run through it blindfolded. The journey to the endgame in WoW is a fun ride but it can get really bornig as there isnt enough good quests to do.

EQ2's Endgame is very plentiful to a new Player you will have alot of zones to do all the way up to max level there is raids starting at level 30 and alot at the 50 mark with the DoF expansion. There is alot of diffrent questlines all the way up depending on what side you chose you have the heritage quests for good useable items as well as a item for your house. You have the  SoD quest that will take you awile and force you to group to continue it. and my fav quest line in any game so far is the Epic Weapon Quests this is what i love in a MMO this is what i have loved for the last 12 years i have been playing them.

I do not currently play EQ2 or WoW because WoW is to easy and it always was in my opinion i have a max level toon and have raided all the bosses including cata ones and its still to easy. EQ2 has gone from a very great game to a easier overall game they did dumb it down alot for your journey to max level but the endgame is still there.

As far as EQ2 being free your more then wel;come to play on the extended servers but the better time and the better community is  the live players where you buy the boxed game and pay to play.

Do you enjoy asking a question about where to receive training or where to buy things or a general question about your class, and having someone reply with "UR SOO STOOPID. GO PHAIL SUM MOAR!"   ?

    If so, go with Warcraft.

Ok, I'll give it a go.  I began with WOW a little over a year ago, and have played like 5 other types since.  I enjoyed most but graphics/performance seem to be the primary difference.  Where WOW beats the rest is under the performance and streamlined content category.  Very smooth game makes for quick fun.  Some tough bosses in WOW and fun, easy to understand PVP.  I'm only a few weeks into Everquest 2, began on the free extended than bought the game and started a live subscription.  If you just want to kill things, it's a lot like WOW but a little less fluid in my opinion, and not as streamlined.  If you like to immerse yourself into other aspects of the game like roleplaying, crafting, and housing, Everquest 2 is the right choice.  I like crafting furniture and items personally, and there are thousands of items you can make up on your own (like aquariums) by crafting shelves, and mirros, ect. then putting them together to look like an aquarium complete with sharks, or fish inside.  I've seen bars, musical instruments, libraries, all fully stocked, detailed, and intricate just by players being creative with the freedom in the game.  Neither game is as deep as I would enjoy, but there are definite differences in the crafting and creative options.  WOW gets you in the game fast, both are easy to level up, both have working economies, and both are easy to travel around.  (Although Everquest seems ridiculously easy to travel across continents.)   WOW is better for PVP in my opinion, but less difficult.  (if you consider more difficult as deeper)  To sum it up i think you should try both, but if  you want to do more than run dungeons or quest Everquest2 gives the options where WOW does not.  But what WOW does do, it does with pure perfection, including a real sense  of humor in the quest lines.  Let me know what you decide on.  I'm still relatively new and also trying out a sandbox game called Wurm.  (Just to clarify, if I had to choose for myself it would be Everquest 2 without a doubt, but wishing they'd make it more of a challenge.)

Thankyou so much for all the info.  You nailed it on the head.  I was planning on getting the boxed version anyway.  I have to have a box.  I'm old fashion, I guess.  You basically mentioned all the things I'm looking for so I'm thinking Everquest may be the direction I go.  Plus, I've always had a thing for supporting the little guy.  I tend to not like the extremely overhyped games that EVERYONE plays.  Obviously WOW is just that.

I like how all that sounds.  I don't want to just grind and grind.  I would rather immerse myself in the world more and have more options.  Everquest 2 sounds like it has more of that.

I did actually dip into both games a little.  I got into a trial for both and I enjoyed both more.  WOW felt a little more cardboard to me and EQ2 felt more like a living breathing world due to the great sound effects and graphics.  I'm also a big sound track fan and the music in EQ2 is gorgeous from what I've heard so far.  It's a little thing, I know, but it's just something that I noticed.

I'm thinking Everquest 2 will be the one I go with.

EQ2 has the more mature looking setting, and everything looks better, the classes are more complex.  You have an insane amount of skills for all sorts of occasions and situations.  However it runs terribly on any system, poor game engin.  The community is more mature.  If you want solid PVE, more complex situational combat, and dont mind  a game that runs low FPS, EQ2 is your game, however this is a terrible pvp game, even with the battle ground attempt (which i found fun)

WoW has possibly the best mmorpg engin out.  Everything is fluid and the animations are flawless.  There is more to do in wow, questing is fun in both games, and probably the best out there between the two, so you cant lose there either way.  More themepark functions, you can find random dungeons within minuets at any level in the right battlegroup.  You can join a pvp battleground in minuets too.  However its not noob friendly like EQ2.  Everyone is a vet, there is already a set path for you no matter what class you pick.  Towards endgame you will need just about exactly the right requipment and use the right skill rotation.  If you cannot handle is, and do not preform as expected you will be removed from the group.  Endgame is terribly unforgiving to players who do not follow the set procedures on skill rotation and build.  This can possbily be avoided by picking a lower pop server on a lower pop battlegroup, but then you wont have the ability to quickly find groups or random dungeons/BG's.  Also the character modles and the look is very cartoonish, while the world terrain looks as modern as they come, your character will look out of place, akward and goofy at all times.

Both games are great.  World of Warcraft may be a bit easier to get into for new players.  Everquest 2 has a lot more options for playing with friends if you both aren't the same level though, so you can always play together with your friend and play solo when your friend isn't online.  For someone new to the genre I would recommend either, so you could go both ways here and will probably wind up having a good time, especially with a friend.

I do feel Everquest 2 has a bit more content for a duo team to do successfully, if you plan on only doing duo.

are you serious? What would you rather eat..... an elephant dong hoggy  OR   hippopatamus  fried butthole rings???

Both games are just as nasty just flip a coin

I can give you reasons for both games but you and your buddy should do like this instead of listening to us:

Do a free trial of both games, one weekend for one and another for the second game. After that discuss which game you liked best.

EQ2X isn't as good as Wow and EQ2 BTW.

No one of us can tell you which game that fits you best. I prefer EQ2 myself, many of my buddies prefer Wow but only trying both will tell you which game you will prefer. And both games have free trials anyways, so make a thing out of it. Get 2 computers to one of your places, some Cola or beer and snacks and play your eyes out, and repeat with the other game the weekend after. It's the funniest way to choose a game. :)

Honestly Wow and everquest 2 are different animals for alot o reasons people already stated.  With that said, if you are not choosing WoW, I would recommend LOTRO before I would EQ2.  However EQ2 aint that bad of a game.  Just like LOTOR much better.

I don't know much about WoW and never got too into EQ2 because it seemed to have lost some of its roots with the instances and other things but to be honest if I had to choose between the two I would go with EQ2 because I like the artwork and feel of the game more. Also the bard is a very fun class to play and carry your group with. Does WoW have a bard-like class?

I enjoyed Warcraft a lot and that was the first online game that I have ever played. When I first heard of World of Warcraft I thought, "Humans vs Orcs. Hrmm . .. will probably have terrible lore. Doesn't seem like it will be as cool as UO and EQ." I guess I was wrong. Many people at my work and all across the world love that game. I have thought about trying it a few times because I know so many people who play that I would have fun. It just doesn't look interesting enough for me to try it though. I don't even know what I am talking about lol I haven't even tried WoW. I like Blizzard games that I have played and never felt like I wasted my money. I just havent been able to play any of their games for a very long time. I would probably rather play Warcraft or Starcraft than WoW though lol whenever I see pictures of WoW or videos of the gameplay the bright colors bother me too much to be interested in it as a MMORPG. Its weird.

When it comes down to it these days I just do not want to spend my time watching peoples health as a healer, holding aggro as a tank, stopping ugly situations with CC, or dealing DPS mindlessly by repeating the same combos over and over. There is only so much a person can take and almost every MMORPG has this. I am tired of being stuck in a role when it comes to PVE and PVP. I like Guildwars a lot more though because no matter what your class is, your role can change every map or every match even. It was fun while it lasted but I can't do that for the rest of my life . ... slap a different skin on it and create a different world that I haven't seen and it won't matter if it comes down to having to watch my teams health or whatever while clicking TAB+1+2+3+4. If you are new to it I bet that you would have a lot more fun but if you have been doing it for awhile and most games that keep coming out have that same kind of coop gameplay it can get old. I cant see myself going back to that. To be honest when MMORPGs first came out the biggest thing that stopped me from wanting to play was looking over peoples shoulders as their character auto-attacked some monster while floating numbers came from it. It just looked boring to me. I am glad that I gave MMORPGs a shot though because I've had lots of good times! Its awesome that people play games on the internet with other people . .. usually funner than watching TV anyways. You'll have lots of fun.

bleh tried to explain myself but I cant say I've played WoW. EQ came first and WoW didnt seem to offer what EQ already had for me so my opinion is biased.

What I don't get is why so many people like EQ2 more than Vanguard. I would rather go with Vanguard over EQ2 but wouldn't want to go at it alone . .... I probably wouldn't bother without a RL friend to take the plunge with me or something. If Vanguard's pop is still playable I would recommend checking that out though. They have a bard class too! hehe

Definitely EQ2 > WoW though imo (cant stop thinking of being a bard atm. .. love that class!) I think you probably made the right choice.image

go for warcraft it still feels like a world and not a series of teleports to every single zone.

What's the point of it feeling like a world if you go through it in the same path like most everyone else? At least EQ2 has options.

To OP - EQ2. WoW is a nice game, but lacking compared to EQ2 in content. It has more raids, better group play, better crafting, housing/social outfits, etc.

    Playing - EVE, Wurm

Retired - Final Fantasy XI, Anarchy Online, Mabinogi

    Waiting - ArcheAge, Salem

As someone who has played WoW since open beta in 2004 I'd say go with EQ2. The WoW community is incredibly juvenile and the latest expansion is buggy and lacking. I cancelled my account earlier in the month and haven't logged in since (Account expires the 28th). I raided through all the previous expansions and vanilla. The new expanstion content can be blown through in a week or two with casual play (80 to 85, 5 new zones).

If you want to play WoW you are going to have to buy all of the expansions along with the original to be able to experience all of the content. From what I understand with EQ2 you only need to purchase the latest expansion to get all of the current content and 30 days of game time. I'd factor the cost into the equation too. I'm considering trying the trial for EQ2 to see if I want to contiune on with fantasy based MMO's that require a subscription to play.

Check Rift in the beta event this week too! New game combining elements from both and other mmos and maybe you will like it. :)

If your going to think about everquest, try out everquest 1 when the time locked progressions servers open up in march if you wanna experience some classic MMO gameplay. Other than that I cant recommend the 2 games you listed.

This, both have free trials. I hate to say it but I'd recommend WoW for a first timer's MMO- they baby step you through every step of the way for most aspects of the genre. That being said, expect the most shallow gameplay and storylines. Best advice would be to level through as much as you can in the trial, get used to instances and such, then drop it.  WoW is a great tutorial for carbon copy fantasy genre MMOs.

Not everyone is head over heels in love with Rift, and the author  was asking about EQ2 and WoW specificially, not alternatives.

With that out of the way, allow me to play the devils advocate once more and recommend WoW over EQ2. I've played both for extended periods of time (I've played WoW off and on since six months after it was released, and EQ2 for a little over a year), and between the two I feel that WoW is the better game.

That's not to say EQ2 isn't a good game - it is. There's a lot of stuff it does better than WoW, especially when it comes to character customization, roleplaying, and world immersion. However, WoW trumps EQ2 in the most vital of areas - gameplay. Say what you will, but WoW's core gameplay is fun, addictive, and easy to grasp. It's the main reason why they're the only MMO to see consistent, steadily growing numbers post-launch.

Translation:  If you want option number 3, Rift beta looks like the next big thing in the MMO world.

Which brings me to my next point kids... don't do crack!

    Here's MY opinion:

I like WoW, I like EQ.  EQ2 was ok but wasn't great.  WoW kept my attention well into my 2nd and 3rd toons.  By maxing toon number 3, raiding was beyond me.  I hate the WoW mentality of needing GS's and if you didn't Raid you weren't worth anything.

EQ2 was ok.  I think I got to around lvl 40 or so and never ONCE grouped.  The problem was is I missed a WHOLE ton of content.  I finally got into a guild of good people an they took me through one of the original lvl 30 endgame dungeons and was telling me all this interesting stuff about how such-n-such sword was impossible to get before and people would camp it, etc, etc.

Ultimately if I can't experience EVERY potion of an MMO, I don't enjoy it.  Losing out on GOOD instances and important quests for lore takes AWAY from that.  Both WoW and EQ2 have lost that.  I hit dungeons only because I could find a group for them.  All lore is important IMO in a game.  That's part of the journey.
