Questions for someone experienced with EQII

My friend bought me EQII and I got to play it for a month or so during the schoolyear, but I simply didn't have the time to justify spending on the monthly fee. I got to level 15 or so as a Guardian.

I played WoW a *lot*, both during Winter break and at the beginning of the schoolyear, but lost interest after I hit the level cap. I played the original EQ for about five years, from its release to just about a year ago. In the original EQ, I enjoyed raiding and later, the Lost Dungeons. However, after a while even EQ's formula sort of got old, boring, same 'ol same 'ol even when you went to new places - which used to be the big thing that kept be enjoying the game.

As a result, I didn't really enjoy WoW. I didn't want to get into another end-game raid fest, as I've been drawn more and more to single player games that I've been wanting to play, finally beat, or re-enjoy (such as the entire Final Fantasy seriesimage.) Anyways, my point in sharing all of this is that from what I played of EQII, I just didn't really enjoy it. Although it certainly had plenty of new things that made it completely different from EQ1, I just didn't particularly find the game compelling.

I'm wondering if anyone can give me their experiences in EQII and if/why they quit or are still playing, and maybe compare it to the experiences I can relate to in WoW or the original EQ. I guess I'm just wanting to double-check before I write off my EQII account and move on to GuildWars as my casual MMORPG experience. (I have to admit that its lack of a monthly fee does seem to make it the perfect candidate.)

EQII isn't totally solo friendly. I'd say the overall game is deeper in EQII than WoW, but if WoW bored you, I can't see EQII keeping your attention much longer.

    I have a Guardian 45 (Armorer 45).
I quit because the game has no challenges, it s a grind feast and totally boring.............

After 4 years of EQ I would have expected a better product from Soe.
Stick with WoW, or play GW til something better comes out ::::39::

For only $5 or $6 more than you spend on wow or other games you can get a subscription to all of SOE's games. for $21.99 you get EQ, EQ2, SW:G, Planetside and some cheapos.. You still have to buy the games but as far as value for a subscription cost you cant beat it..

Ok economics aside I played EQ since kunark. I kinda play EQ2 but to be honest the game isnt that immersive. The system they have in place for combat breaks the immersion factor completely. Like many of the newer "Big" games SOE went instance crazy with EQ2 which again affects the immersive factor. When i play EQ2 i feel like i'm playing the game they intended me to play rather than being free to choose my path. It's a fun game to play a few times a month just for something different but then if thats what your looking for Guild Wars has no monthly fee and is just as effective at killing a few hours here and there. I play both and neither gets high grades from me. Saga of Ryzom and Eve-Online are the top 2 games in my book. They both have free trials so you might wanna check them out :)

*edit* let me add that 2 weeks is plenty of time to get to know Saga of Ryzom but with Eve-Online you wont really get a feel for it for months until you've got skills and are part of an alliance or pvp corp. I think CCP (the makers of eve) are probably the best game company going atm and Nevrax (the makers of SoR) are a close 2nd that due to competition are having a rough go with subscription numbers but they are incredibly innovative.

Lol it sounds like a torture to me, I can't even play 1 single Soe game let alone all of them ::::35::

I bought EQ2 the first day it was released, expecting a much better game than I got. The first impression was great, graphically it was beautiful, the boat ride and Isle of Refuge was very well done. After getting off the Isle things started going down hill. Crafting was sluggish and boring, soloing was very difficult, the classes were too similar(I know they did this for balance purposes but honestly I'd rather have diversity than balance). The voiceovers were neat at first but really didn't add a whole hell of alot to the game. The combat got very repetative, it really did feel "grindy". Heroic opportunities are a gimic and are poorly implemented IMO. I could have overlooked the fact that it had no PvP if the PvE had been suberb, but it wasn't, it was very boring and could not hold my interest.

I would not recommend EQ2 to anyone.

You know what none of them are all that bad in moderation LOL but again i spend the majority of my time on EVE.

You know what would be cool is if a 3rd party could put together packages for different games like SOE has done for theirs.. i think you could find smaller game companies willing to team up in that fashion to compete with what soe does.. just food for thought.

What is original with Eve Online and Saga of Ryzom? Several of you have said that they're the only games worth playing / that are original, so my next logical question is what makes them so?

Naturally I'm going to go check out their websites, but I'd much rather get an opinion from fellow gamers than simply rely on websites... if the websites were always accurate, then WoW and EQ2 would both have held my attention for longer than a month or two =D
