DCUO: Next Gen Is Here

sonoggisonoggi Member Posts: 1,119

DCUO is SOE's baby.  it's next gen and puts current (and some upcoming) mmo's to shame.  it's basically what i expect GW2 to be (in the very least). already, i have no reason to muck around in the dirt that is WoW, or consider looking into [ WoW-in-space] swtor which has a horribly outdated combat system.

DCUO's combat system is revolutionary because you have 5  "talent trees" for any character: 3 themed powersets, travel combat powers, and weapons which revolve around buiding complex combos. weapon combos you can always do to allow your power to regenerate while you have only 6 abilities (out of maybe a hundred) on the toolbar. having access to only 6 abilities, weapons that require aiming and combo-building, and dodging works similarly to GW2's system. this is the best system on the market because it allows you to customize not only how your character looks, but also how s/he plays. every playstyle is covered. this is something that WoW's devs can only DREAM of.

pvp is a blast because it is skill-based, meaning you need to develop specific  neuromusculature to succeed. technically, every CC ability can be broken out of, and many powers can be dodged entirely if youre fast enough. if youre familiar with Tekken you'll know that good players know how to break combo chains, and DCUO works the same. all powersets and most powers are viable in pvp. there are many different styles emerging already.

it remains to be seen what SOE will do to run DCUO into the ground, or take it up into the skies. currently, the game is polished with very solid foundations and a decent amount of content.

Next Gen, in a way that dumbs down controlls so the game is playble on a controller.  Wewt wewt Next Gen 2.0 will be a game that plays for you and all you do is watch the screen.

And please, bash WoW some more, cause no opinion of any new game is worth $0.02 unless some WoW bashing is involved, or a slap onto some other unreleased game.

The game is awesome but it's not polished.

I have a lvl 30 character and u dont want to start describing what ive seen from this game.

I just give it time because the gameplay is just awesome,it has room for many many more and because it is only fewdays from release.

If the game dont improves in the upcoming 2 months then alot of players will start running away.

Out of curiousity, peenk,  have you played the game? It really is a lot of fun and addictive. Sure there are flaws but they are minor and don't detract from an otherwise nearly perfect MMO launch. I can't wait for expansion packs.

To me, the only real issue with the game (other than the poor chat system) is how fast you can fly through the content. I am playing an hour or so a day and I am already lvl 22 after a week and a half (lvl cap is 30!). I guess one could argue that at least there is no grind, and that is true, but the game could have launched with more content and a slightly slower rise to lvl cap.

I enjoy DCUO, and I've also played Wow and this post makes me want to cry.

If you think this is next gen, i wonder where the hell you've been.

DCUO does absolutely nothing innovative, even the combat has been done before.

Not only that, the games not even that well polished.

A great game, yup.. next gen? No way.

the "complex combos" are a PITA not next gen i mean come one

    left click(tap x3) + right click (hold x3)

    or

    left click(tap x9) + right click (holdx3)

I'm sorry that kinda of combat is aggrovating, not fun and often painful on the fingers and detrimental to the mouse.

I don't see how a single player type combat system is next gen. As you mention Tekken as an example that this type of combat has been around for a while. It's justv the first time someone put it into an mmo and charged player 15 a month. I'm not even sure it takes that much "skill" to be good at it. Just practice and quick fingers. I didn't play Tekken as much as my friends but I still could beat them nearly 50% of time. You just have to play it enough to know when to use block, or break up a combo, etc. It is about time some dev thought to bring the action combat mode to mmo's and mmo's to the console. They'll probably make a lot of $.

Here's to hoping you are trolling and not a complete nublet who just started gaming yesterday.

The combat system is far from revolutionary. It doesn't take much to find a system exactly like it. Batman: Arkham Asylum has the same combat system. This system has been being used forever. It's foolish to think that "combining button smashes and mouse/joystick movement gives you special moves" is revolutionary.

The talent trees are no different than any other game with talent trees. You get points and put points into the tree for skills. The game is like you said like Guild Wars which makes it even less revolutionary. It has less character customization than the games it tries to replace (City of Heroes and Champions Online). The game would be worth it for a one time buy or a trivial monthly fee. It's no where near a game worth paying $15 a month for. You correctly  hinted one thing however, which is SoE running into the ground like they have with every other MMO they touched.

I second that. I think the gameplay is awesome too. But it still needs alot of work, and was probably not ready for a release. It's nothing you notice at first, it doesnt have that many major bugs or gamebreaking issues, but once you start looking into its mechanics, the powers, their synergies you sometime wonder if they really took some time to test that. Not even talking about the terrible descriptions you get in game for your powers.

Otherwise, it's true also that the game is alot of fun ;)
