Questions for UO

I tried UO back in 2001, but quit in 2 months. Basically, I want to come back but I need to know how friendly the aged UO is to newbies, how many people still play UO, and if there is a free trial so I can check out its state.

    There is a 15 day trial available to download from fileplanet.
    Even easier if you live in the UK it's on the cover-disk of this months PC Gamer magazine.
