To me, hardcore is an MMO that functions like EQ, AO or FFXI. I like grinds, long respawns on mobs, and forced grouping. To me everything lately is solo-quest to the cap and then stumble into endgame with players who don't understand group aspects. My recent timekill DCUO is a perfect example. Leveling is a joke, I hit the cap in 4 days. Then the "endgame" was mostly rehashed solo content, but now I have 3 people with me. Unfortunately since everyone solo'd for 30 levels most people don't understand their role in a group and don't want to do anything but DD. I know this isn't aimed at MMO gamers, but c'mon if I'm paying a sub I don't want a console action game experience.
I have high hopes for RIFT, but it seems to be another solofest.
P2P or not doesn't matter, as long as its a hardcore MMO aimed at old school MMO gamers.

just quit playing the day's of MMO's that we like are over there all solo play game now with gear grinding at the end and max lvl in a week. I quit and I am finding stuff I used to do a blast like playing pool and stuff with fourm sruffing on the side. It took me 3 years to finaly fully kick the habit manly thank to the crap the call MMO RPG's these days.
yes I do have a urge to play still but I am sticking to it and feeling good.
I don't think you will find the long grinds, long spawn times, and forced grouping all together in any game newer than EQ1 or 2. Maybe Vanguard, but I haven't really played it. Most of these things are hated by players who just want to get their rewards fast and be done with it.
Have you played City of Heroes? While it doesn't "force" you to group, you would be greatly hindering your progression speed if you try to solo. The "grind" to the level cap has a lot of story to enjoy along the way if you are that type of person. I would put the grind at an average speed for MMOs, but it depends a lot on how you play the game and who you team with.
You may be better off going back to those MMOs you mentioned if they are exactly what you are looking for. Nobody these days would dare to re-make the exact same gameplay due to the fear of losing the "I want it nao" crowd.
Darkfall is your game i think.
Basically has everything you want.
MMO wish list:
-Changeable worlds
-Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads
OP...try Istaria.
Completely F2P as a human...P2P as other races.
You have nothing to lose.
Definitely check out the Darkfall free trial.
For me, it's the second best mmorpg I've had the pleasure of playing. Considering your tastes, Darkfall could well be a good fit.
"Mr. Rothstein, your people never will understand... the way it works out here. You're all just our guests. But you act like you're at home. Let me tell you something, partner. You ain't home. But that's where we're gonna send you if it harelips the governor." - Pat Webb
Might try Fallen Earth, its post apoc era.. very long long grind or way up to 50. very technical. if you like to craft, crafting is great. takes 3 real time days just to craft a car.. crafting works while logged out too.
Lineage 2.
and get into a clan academy. Which will hopefully lead into you getting into the clan.
Also, I believe there is an EQ progression server about to open up. March I think?

You will probably laugh in my face but I remember Knight Online being very group oriented. Very very dated game and that shit has really changed over the years but yeah figured it wouldnt hurt to at least tell you of a game. I feel like I know of more so I will let you know if I think of them. Also if you find one thats f2p or freemium I'm down to start up a group in a new game
Totally in the same boat. I'm tired of these solo oriented MMO's. MMO style questing is a crutch needed to make games massively multiplayer. If you are going to make a game solo why do it MMO style.
DCUO should've been a multiplayer beat 'em up with a cinematic storyline. I would've loved that. It has no need for MMO style shackles because it doesn't make use of the MMO benefits that come with them.
I tried Allods and Aion but they both had some problems. Mainly all these solo-able MMO's don't require grouping until end game and I get bored soloing through early and mid game. I want a challenge at every level, preferably with group tactics, instead I solo 15 mobs 20 times each level by pushing 1 and 2 while watching Hulu.
Now I'm looking toward RIFT. Gonna spend as much time on Beta 5 this Tuesday as I can to see how the game plays, we'll see.
erm,
not to turn this into a "Rift" thread but I think, if you are looking for something that hearkens back to older games, you are going to have to take Rift with a grain of salt and have to apply yourself in a different way.
I say that because you are going to log in, see that it's a linear quest grinder and immediately log out.
The problem with that is if you took the time to get out of the opening area and then just did a few quests to get you up and running, you could easily jump off the quest train and start looking for invasions, rifts, etc. That and see what the pvp is about. There are also some group dungeons.
I didn't realy start enjoying rift until I made an active choice to "not quest".
So getting back on topic, Rift would not be considered remotely hardcore and I would say that it distills the current formula for quest games even more.
sometimes n these games you have to make a decision to approach them on your terms.
so rift is "not" hardcore.

Very well put. You described my experience with the game pretty well as in I hit level 10 and logged out. Maybe I should take your advice though.
Oh you just have to get off that quest train. At least if it starts becoming bothersome.
Also on topic, it seems that the older games didn't really have all that many quests so you could just "be" in the world. I found when I got off the Rift quest train the game, the world and the community started to feel a bit more old school. I was a person in a world with goals that aligned with the players around me. Especially when the invasions started to attack the main city. Going AFK only to discover the area is being attacked when you get back is enough to get your butt into gear.
But if players allow themselves to follow the quests (and don't like them) then that's enough to make any old school player quit.
I think one of the things that that the newer games have accidentlaly introduced is that they tried to streamline many of the things in old school games, players seemed to like this, so developers turned it up.
suddenly the game is escorting you through it and players sometimes don't even realize that this was all supposed to be an optional way of playing. But the more they do it, the more devs see that it's successful and the more they streamline.

i would recommand you vanguard, which would be exactly what are you looking for, having it higher population, but even with low one you still could like it.
