Hey, guys n gals.
Im experiencing severe performance issues with ff xiv. No matter wheter i set the gfx to the absolute minimum or set it to a pretty decent midfield-gfx, the fps are always as same low. (around 20 in more populated areas; and ~35 in minor detailed places) My system may not be the newest one yet i never had any real problem playing any other games with decent gfx in a smooth way. So at this time i dont really wanna buy a complete new system since i had to exchange almost everything (mobo, gfx, cpu, ram etc ...) which would cost me around ~1000€. So i’m considering just substituting either the cpu and/or gfx-card which would cost me around ~300€.
So here are my sys-specs:
Core2duo E6600
@3,3 Ghz
4GB Ram
Radeon HD 4870
Asus P5B Deluxe Mobo
So as i mentioned before i am aware that this sys is actually a bit obsolete but still does a pretty good job. So would you agree that in this case the biggest problem might be the cpu? I heard that ff xiv is optimized for cpu’s with at least 4 cores. So i’d consider buying a Core 2 Quad „Q9400“ and oc it to like ~3,5 Ghz. Which would cost me ~150€. Do you think this would be worth it? In addition i’d also consider to get a GTX 460 Gfx-card (~150 – 200€) since i could take this card to the other system which i’m planing to get in about a year.
Would be nice if you could share your thoughts with me
thanks in advance.
have a nice day.

With a system like that, I'd imagine it's your internet connection or their servers that is causing you to have that sort of FPS. What resolution are you running the game at?
There is no reason that system can't play any game at 30fps or more on the medium/high settings. Your 3.3 Ghz is plenty for most MMO games on the market today even counting EQ2 which is a beastly cpu hog. I know because I have the same CPU with the same OC, 4 gigs patriot ram, and all high end parts. My vdeocard is a GTX260 216 OC. ; )
Games that are unoptimised or make heavy use of alpha blends, soft shadows, ambient occlusion, or other "filter" type effects such as HDR will be using tons of extra resources just trying to "overlay" special effects over what is actually being rendered. Turn up the texture quality, turn up the view distance, turn up the model density (to reasonable levels), turn down the HDR or bloom effects and any other "overlayed filter" enhancements (shadows and AO) and you will have yourself a smooth game on most any game you play. Even AA comes at a far lower cost than many forms of soft shadows etc. This is all dependant on what resolution you play at also. If you game at a lower resolution I would start adding AA to get rid of jaggies before I'd use any of the other cheap overlay effects.

hey and thx for ur quick reply.
i run it in 1680x1050. which is a resolution i really dont wanna miss. i'd rather turn everything else down which i did and as already mentioned it didn't really have any notable effect on the performance. btw, i also tried other resolutions - even the lowest resolution which actually didnt cause any real performance boost either. :-/ i heard that the servers are located in japan? wouldnt be surprised if i hadn't the best of connections over there since i do live in vienna/austria (20 mbit line) but do u actually think that the connection would have such a significant effect on the fps? i rather doubt that.
thanks again.

thanks for ur post as well.
actually i have all those lil things turned off anyway. the only thing that might really seem "high" is the resolution but as i said, i even tried to lower that without any real success.
the real weird thing is that even if i turn EVERYTHING to the absolute minimum (which looks absolutely gross) i couldnt note any significant success in boosting the performance.

I have never experienced a constant fps drop on any MMO caused by lag. Usually if you are lagging that much you are disconnected.
If you have done all the tweaks that I mentioned, running at lower resolutions/game settings, and are still getting low fps in only that game, then logically I would assume it to be a game specific issue and nothing to do with your computer and your connection. Most people that have played the OB have figured out it's not optimized for the PC market at all. Meaning the vast majority of players have had technical issues specific to this individual game. Square Enix themselves market a $3,700 PC as the recommended PC for this game ; ) I'll pass.
My advice to you is to save your money and play another game on the PC. This game is obviously a PS3 optimized game and will hopefully perform better on that device. We will have to wait and see how that shakes down.

so basically u would say that getting the above mentioned hardware wouldnt really helpt me much as well? and/or are not worth the money compared to my current system-specs?
yeah, the game is definitely not well programmed (at least the pc version)
thx

as choujiofkono said.
For example -Ive tried the open beta with a oc 5970 (950/5000) and a i7 4ghz. Even if gpu-z is telling me that both gpu´s are in used I will not see a performance drop if I disable a gpu. Do I get a performance boost if I disable some effects? Some few more fps but its shakey as hell.
Ive cancelled my pre order and will wait for SE to optimize this game for the pc before I give them my cash.

wow. even with that sys you are experiencing those issues? well, i guess thats the ultimative proof that it might be better to keep the hands off the pc version (at least for now) completely. -_-
thanks for ur insightful replys

Curious.
I've got pretty much the exact same hardware you're on, but I've been running this at max settings at 2560x1600 without a hitch.
Only graphic option I have disabled is sampling as AA has historically caused lag for me. Wonder now if I should turn it on and see what happens though.
I'd probably personally chalk it up to your internet connection/settings or your server choice.

i suppose ur post is directed to astrob0y and his system, right?
Hah! I love blatant lies.
I'm calling BS on this.

As you can note you have to have near a top of the line PC to run windowed with some effects off.

To the OP. Shut off all in game options, Shadows, Extended, Physics and Dust. (although dust is probably minimal)
In FFXIVConfig turn textures to standard and filtering to high. That should give you "playable" framerates.
If it doesn't turn your buffer to 2/3 or 3/4. That will significantly degrade the look of the game though.
(i personally found the in game graphics options had the biggest effect on performance)
Drop the next-gen marketing and people will argue if the game itself has merit.
Try turning on v-synch in your graphics card control panel. I tried looking for it in game settings but didn't find it anywhere. Once I set vsynch to "force on" in my nvidia control panel it elimiated screen tearing and performance is much better.
heyhey.
i have all of these in-game options turned off anyway.
also tried any config tweak around possible with little or no luck. even the worst possible settings (which really just hurt my eyes, especially the "buffer 2/3" setting) got me not even 5 fps. no matter what options i use the game is still rather unplayable for me. the controls and everything seem just so lagged (btw, i have the hardware-mouse fix).
cheers
This is what did it for me, Made the difference between laggy and perfectly playable. I started with 1/2 Window size and while smooth as silk, the edges were too pixeled/grainy. Changed to 3/4 and the pic scenery was quite pretty (not perfect but still good).
I have more or less the same rig as to OP.
Edit: Oh and I turned off dust and shadows.
Interesting that it's the people that aren't saying the sky is falling nowadays that get called the liars...

Now true my framerate halves itself when I'm in game and combat and what not. I also figured out that each step I drop my screen resolution I gain about ten frames. Floating around 30 frames in the game when in combat or crowded places ain't terrible though.
Generally the two things I've noticed to cause the most lag is shadows, AA, and the screen resolution. As I'm only really willing to sacrifice AA, I'm rather glad at my performance, though I guess shrinking to 1920x1200 might be a good idea for stability.
So Nyah!
EDIT: It shrunk my in game screengrab. o_O Gonna see if I can reupload it. >_<
EDIT2: FUUUUUU- Damnit the image apparently breaks file size limit by a wee bit. Q_Q Guess I can try and save it at a lower quality.
EDIT3: Resaved! Was only 24 kb over.

Haters gotta hate.
My recommendation if you encounter severe frame rate problems:
Set buffer from "Double" to "Resolution." I don't know if "double" does anything other than double the work it needs to render things.
Turn off Ambient Occlusion. (Not only slow, but if combined with double resolution it will cause severe lag.)
Set textures from "High" to "Standard" (there's next to no noticable visual quality difference and it producesa lot better performance when, for example, switching your equipment or having other PCs/NPCs pop into view.)
Around 30 fps in a lowbie zone is not a thing I would call playable. Ive around that as well but think about it- what will happen when there will be more fuzz on the screen.... So I do say that your first post is not fully true to many of us- but Im happy that you are feeling that you can play the game with no problems

Actually 30 fps is pretty good for a detail rich MMO especially if that's for crowded and in combat situations, since those bring the largest dips in fps. That means that her average fps outside of combat situations amounts to a solid 45-60 on highest settings, leaving margins for fps boosts by adjusting one of the other settings or resolutions when needed.
Sounds pretty good to me.
I play AoC on highest settings on DX10 too just because I like the way it looks, AoC is the most resource, performance and graphics intensive MMO I've played, and 30-35 fps on highest settings in the most demanding normal situations is a pretty good deal. I had to tweak 2-3 settings to achieve that for AoC (AA was among them), and from what I've seen so far FFXIV is roughly on equal demanding graphical level as AoC.

deivos, this is pretty curious. wheter the game is called to be playable or not for some ppl this way, i do get like half of these fps values in that area and the game is far from playable for me with these gfx-settings o.O even though we do have kinda the same sys actually ... wtf. the fps shown on ur pic are quite the fps i get even at the lowest settings possible. :-/
have a good one,

The feeling about the performance is, that on two similar pcs which only difference is the gpu one plays smooth at 1920x1200 with an ati hd 4850 1gb and one plays barely ok with an ati hd 3850 512 mb in 1600x1200 with same game/graphic settings.
Mouse lags a bit and keyboard use is quicker often than moving the mouse but the menus are keyboard friendly so its not a problem.

I'd say if you can play it at playable framerates with those settings which are WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY below the recommend specs for playing windowed, the games engine is more flawed then first expected.
Drop the next-gen marketing and people will argue if the game itself has merit.
IMPORTANT for VISTA AND WINDOWS 7 USERS:
If you are running the game in windowed mode make sure you change your theme from an aero theme to a windows basic theme, aero severly destroys the frame rate if windowed games. To do this go to personalize and just scroll down and select Windows basic, Aero themes kill the frame rates of any windowed game you play.
And disable your shadows your FPS will go way up.
The Paladin
Not sure if you have tried this, but in the settings that you can change using the Final Fantasy XIV Config (found in the Start menu) try turning off the depth of field setting. This made a big differnce for me.
