Maybe if they started charging fees, they could keep there servers up and update this game. Eventually its gonna go out of cash holding up everyone and when no one buys cause everyone has it, you have a huge server with tons of ppl, lots of maintainance, and no money. Spells desaster to me.
SHOULD they start charging?

.....what?
I think you need to read the faq on official site & not listen to whoever you have been talking to/reading about.
(short version: Its the expansions that will give ArenaNet money)

Of course not. I'm simply amazed that 18% of the readers here think they should. They are experimenting with a new business model and frankly it seems to be quite successful. The marketing people are fully cognizant of how many boxes need to be sold and when, etc. If the model scares you (that you may end up without a game in a couple years), don't buy it. If they started charging a monthly fee, I would certainly stop playing, as I suspect a lot of others would as well.

A clue?? He probably couldn't buy a clue! We should all realize by now, the majority of kids don't have the inclination or the attention span, and a lot of times no ability to 'read' anything, the manual, the website, the forums, their schoolbooks, etc. Society has become an instant gratification, I want it all now, herd of monkeys. Gimmie velcro so I don't have to tie my shoes! Too lazy to tell time, gimmie digital watches! If ya can't plug it in and play, they can't use it! Ever see someone try to make change when the cash register goes out and they actually have to try and use a little math?? Ya ever buy something for $10.18, give em a $20 and a quarter, and see the clouds form over therir eyes and brain, and they give you the quarter back because you gave em too much??
Umm... the sugar rush has worn off.... but I think you get the idea.
We now return you to your regularly scheduled program.....

Exactly where did you get the data with your poll? Because it seems to me that you have no idea what you're talking about.
Guild Wars will gain their money for upkeep and development by circulating expansions ever 6-9 months. These expansions will be chapters off the current game, but aren't needed to continue to play and enjoy Guild Wars.
Guild Wars keeps their systems and service updated by using streaming technology, which means you get to play, while the game automatically updates in the background!
Because Guild Wars uses in the majority, something called instanced technology, there really isn't a need for additional servers to adjust for bandwidth like other MMO games have to with persistent worlds.
With that in mind, Guild Wars passes along the savings to their clientelle, the purchasees of their retail game, and strive to keep their Customer Service skills higher than others, due to this very concept. Upset customers, won't buy expansions, no expansions means no money.
It would be good to do some research into the reason why they won't charge a monthly fee, as well as how they will earn their money for R&D prior to posting a poll.
I actually LIKE fee's, it is really good at filtering a lot of the player base that is not that "satisfying"(Was trying to put that politely), i think the game would be a lot more fun with Fee's.
So, Yes, i would like Fee's.
I'd actually play the game if they charged. Knowing that if it has smooth funding that it won't die out in a year or two. More updates and fixes usually follow monthly fees exception for a few games...
NCSoft earns more profit from online games than any other company, far more.
Anyways, they are keeping the servers up, and they are updating. They want you to by that next expansion so don't be surprised to see even more updates than you've seen in many other MMORPG's.. just check their updates page with even more new zones being added in soon.
Sounds like no fees is filtering you out.. so that's good.
All you people out there that think there should be a fee for this game are...well...i wont say...but listen....fees are only part of the funding for an mmo...lets not forget the budget for the game that the companies have...keeping up server, updates....the fact that it is free is a good way of keeping a game alive, besides do you actually think these 2 companies would have brought out a game like this without thinking of how to fund it...come on...get real...This new receipt should work well and there will be updates and new content and the community and support is doing good so far. We should all just give them a chance because jugging from the standard MMO procedures, even if there is a fee, the game can die just as fast...

Could you tell me of any updates that have been done? I have not noticed any.
Guildwars.com has a site that lists all changes.

The front page of guildwars.com links to info about new zones they are adding in free. Game updates shows what they have patched so far.
they charge a fee for guildwars and ill drop it like that.. there isnt anywhere near enough content for the game to cost monthly right now.
(and i know they arent going to add a fee)
its a great off time game, where you can play a few hours and have fun

Again proof that no matter what any company does it simply can not make mmorpg'ers happy. Somewhere in these same forums, some knothead was actually unhappy that Guild Wars did not shut down for maintenance, they refused to understand that the updates are streamed. I guess new ideas are hard to accept for many people. If you want to pay a monthly fee, there are many many games out there for you to feed your money to if that makes you feel better.

Arena.Net is a wholly owned subsidary of NCSoft. NCSoft has their own servers.
i've played Ultima Online, and Everquest previously.
UO for 4 years (loved that game), and EQ for a few months (it was crap)
Now what i simply cannot grasp is that these games had a monthly fee, and yet were often laggy, the servers would often go down, and the games were not updated (content wise) regularly.
Now here comes Guild Wars, which has no monthly fees, no lag, no server crashes AND regular updates...
the mind boggles
[we need a worldwide genocide/ a planetary suicide/ and when the whole damned world is dead/ there''s your f***ing peace]
not really....
£30 for the game, and then £30 every 6-9 months.... that's nothing like paying £10 a month
not only that, but the expansions aren't compulsory either.
sorry i don't know the amount games cost in $$$$.

Yup
You buy the real game frist what costs about 49$. So they get paid of that the fees for the servers for that 6-9 months before they release the next expansion. The monthly fee is about 5-10$, they dont need so big servers because the only points where is people is citites, outside them... Its 1-8 peoples questing. So they dont need too big servers to run the game, so they dont need too much money to keep the servers up.
