Am I the only one who thinks this game is not that great?

StellusStellus Member UncommonPosts: 263

Honestly, I can't get into this game no matter how hard I try. I really want to, but I can't. In order for me to enjoy a game, I have to become immersed in it. This game produces none such feeling. The "Chat Lobby" like towns and instanced zones absolutely kills the mood and the quest stories up to level 10 are extremely bland.

The character models are hideous. The Monk looks like a large baby who suffers from Down Syndrome, the Mesmer is completely flamboyant, while the Ranger can't run without looking like he has a stick up his ass. If your character isn't in a tight outfit in which several thousand other people are wearing at the same time, then he's dancing naked in front of town gates out of sheer boredom. To top it off, there's hardly any diversity as far as appearance goes.

There are a few high points such as the combat system which is intuitive. Other than this, I can't find the motivation to log on and play anymore. I usually stare at my guy as he runs around for a few minutes and then I realize I really don't feel like running around completing meaningless quests wth hardly any backstories to them at all.

I'm surprised at the immense amount of hype and ratings that it receives. It makes me wonder that, since there are no subscription fees, that a lot of first timers in the MMO genre think it's the greatest game in the world when in fact there's several other titles out there that can do ten times more than Guild Wars.

Maybe it's just me...

The monk and mesmer are the two stupidest looking classes, but they do improve their attire later in the game.If you really don't want to look like them, just make them secondary.

Are the quests you're talking about pre or post searing? I found the pre-searing missions to go on a bit too long, and usually head for the academy as soon as ive got all the skills in the area (levelling up in pre searing is not worth it IMO).

My tip is to not take GW too seriously, it's not meant to replace your life (there's Eve Online for that) its designed to be a fun 'pick up and play with a couple of mates' kind of game that is easy to get into and get straight to the action.

And in answer to the thread title, no, there are other people that don't like it and they make themselves pretty apparent to the GW forum (see Salahuddin f.ex, the disgruntled alpha tester).

    ---sig---

PvE in general is pretty lame, if you think long and hard about it. You are spending your time beating a severely gimped AI that would lose to a well trained monkey. Best not to think too long and hard why you are wasting time playing games in general actually...

I think monk outlook sucks and mesmers rock.

Also Stellus. A quick tip for you. Do missions, they're the things that has any backstory and actually follow the story.

Let all not forget that this is not a game to be played day in and day out, if you do, you will get bored real fast or get to the end to quickly... Once they start bringing out the new Chapters, there will be a new reason to play.

The is not appealing to everyone because they are expecting the similar dynamics( or should i say the EXACT dymanics) as a standard MMORPG( which IMO needs a major face lifted). Guild Wars is new and fresh and always beeing improved....so just give it a year or  2 before couting it out.

I only get to play about 2 hrs per day, but I do play every single day, and usually 4-5 hours per day over the weekend.  I have friends in my guild who play 24/7 it seems.  They are still not bored with the game, as a matter of fact they are liking it more every day.  I don't like the argument "this game is not meant to be played day in and day out" because for many people that is simply not true.  The more you play, the more addicting the gameplay becomes.

I agree that it would be nice if there were more customization options for your characters. City of Heroes was the best in that regards.

As for the quests, I don't find them any worse than what you would find in other games. Post searing, the quests seemed to have a decent story behind them. Did you do the North Wall quest? That was pretty awesome how the 'cut scenes' included the party. How the group leader has the conversation with the guard and reports on seeing the Charr. Then how it continues on at the Fort.

I like both instanced and non-instanced zones. It has been nice to do quests without having to worry about other players or groups for that matter taking over the area or hunting down the mobs you need. While the instanced zones don't give the massively multiplayer feel, it is nice to have the zone to your group. I think having the instanced zone lends itself more to a RPGish feel where my character and group is important and has an impact.

Nothing wrong with that. If Guild Wars is the game that gets someone to try out an MMO type game, that's great. Let them dabble around in it and if they're interested (or hooked), then they'll check out some of the other titles.

I have played every Beta weekend and have played everday since the day before retail release and while I'm at work I think of stratagies that I will be using that night after I get home and finish dinner and the few choires I have to do. I'm 53 years old and have been playing RPG games since Viet Nam when the cloest thing to RPG were book Shelf world war II games and you were the General. I own Hundreds of Games for PS2, X-Box, & computer and every D&D PnP book game ever printed .
By Far Guild Wars has them all beat and I hope the game goes on and on for years and years. So If you don't like the game that's OK its one less person to get in my way. My Goal in GW is to reach the top of the ladder at least once with my guild.
So far I have done more than 30 questsand missions and Now I understand that there ar more than twice that many yet to go before I even start Guild vs Guild or get to the expansions . Now if your borard already then your not a role player like the ones I've met before because in 30 years Pluss I haven't gotten Board of games weather they be shooting Real Weapons to playing Checkers or, playing the Baldur's Gate series To elder Scrolls Morrowind series or even zelda I play them over and over and over and always have fun Because I don't do things that bore me.

If your really that bored with the game why did you bother writing the post I quoted you on? Go find something to do that doesn't bore you like: go design a better that isn't boreing Game and then we'll all have more fun playing it.

I play WoW too it's a great game, it's different from GW in many ways. They each require their own style of game play where Wow is more open in its PVP and GW keeps the PvP seperate and confined to arenas. People are going to have their opinions as to which game is better and I look at it this way:
Baldur's Gate ! &II are better for one reason they did it right and they did it right first. Now granted theBG series is getting old and almost completely outdated compaired to WoW & GW but never the less BG is king and always will be but there two new Princes in the playing field now called Guild Wars and World of Warcraft and we'll see who's left stsnding in 10 years. By then the two Princes will have super games blowing them away so for now let's just say that at the end of this year when all the votes and sales totals of these two games are added up it's going to be real close. Then the winner will have bragging rights and I see no reason to slam either of the two games they're both great successes and great games.

one other thing; Both games are infints and they have along way to go and alot of growing to do with lots of improvements to be made to them. That's what so good about them both. When you get threw the main guests new ones pop up with battles and adventures we never ever dreamed of and that is what's going to keep these two games alive and kickin. so let the contest for number 1 for the year rage on and in the end one will be just a little more popular than the other. But watch out because there are alot of game manufactures pumping out single player RPG, MMORPG's and assorted other games comming that will join the race so we'll see.

But Guild Wars will win LOL ::::01::

Even though I point out some dissatisfaction with the game, I still very much want to like it. My friends play it day in and day out. While I know the game should not "replace my life" I still can't find enjoyment out of it. I'm a casual gamer and I really don't have time to play through 20 levels to get to the good stuff.

I spent my money on this game, so it is every intention of mine to do everything I can to enjoy it. Right now, I'm struggling.

  • StellusStellus Member UncommonPosts: 263

And for the record - my argument has nothing to do with WoW. I started hating WoW after level 40 and I haven't looked back.

If you're looking for an immersive experience in Guild Wars, I'd suggest trying to find a Roleplaying guild. It seems the instanced nature of GW would be a great RP tool if you had a good group of people. Can even filter out local chat.
  • TroyDarkswrdTroyDarkswrd Member Posts: 21

Remember you can start out with a level 20 character if you want to fight in the arenas and if not there isn't any rush to become level 20. The Idea of Guild Wars is to have fun not gain levels. I have three different characters. one is almost level 20 but the other two have barely made it to level 5 and 6. each ot the character are what I consider Test characters for learning how to play with different styles of game play Character combinations so, that once I do deside to go into the arena with my Guild I'll be a great player and leader not just another player in my own guild. Yes I have a Guild called "The Ironworks" and I made it and hope to someday help take it to the top with the rest of the members.

Chat can be filtered out, I personally always have local chat turned off if I visit a major town (pre/post-searing Ascalon - everything else isn't as busy and doesn't have as many people spamming in different languages) and Trade as well.
If the instanced zones kill the mood for you, then this game is simply not for you. Personally I think the instanced zones are great - no killstealing/lootstealing/ganking/kiddies dancing naked/kiddies spamming leetspeak/etc.. it's all yours (along with your party - so you still get the online feel).

If I go into Droknar's Forge right now it'll be very hard to find someone who looks exactly like me - the dyes and varying armor definitely ensure that appearances are quite varied, especially end-game.
And if you really want to stand out, go gather enough cash and resources for the 15K armors - whom have the same stats as the 1.5K's but look completely different.

Post-searing, the quests are most definitely integrated with the overarching storyline. It really makes you feel like you're advancing the story even while you complete regular quests (not the main missions).
The (post-searing) quests are far more involving than those in WoW, L2, Legend of MIR, Fighting Legends, etc.. (imo.)

I've played around 20 MMO-games, Guild Wars beats them all.
Several of my friends are fanatic about MMO-games, they're all playing Guild Wars - not some other MMO that might have 10x more features, but just outright sucks in implementation.
Having more options does not equal a better game, GW's implementation of the features it does have is (imo.) nearly flawless - I've yet to see that in any other MMO-game (excluding Shattered Galaxy, which was simply awesome - despite not offering much beyond teambased PvP).

Example of how more features does not equal a better game:
Unreal had a story-driven singleplayer campaign as well as modding/multiplayer options, UT Classic only had the modding/multiplayer options - yet UT Classic's gameplay was far superior and it remains the more popular game to this day. ::::20::

I've played a few hours (see sig) and I never get bored.  Of course I think the guild that I'm in helps with that a lot.  I spend a lot of my time redoing quests and missions that I've completed to help out friends and a few complete strangers.  Then again I love taking my level 20 W/Mo through the Defend the Great Northwall mission to see how fast I can kill the entire Charr army there.  Also I love playing tour guide for others.  Maybe there is another way that you can play the game that might make it more fun.  What makes the other games that you play fun?

Are you playing the right game? Last I looked there was an ongoing story that completely involves your character. Complete with cut scenes. I cant think of a single game that has gone to the lengths of GW as far as involved quest go. You fight side by side with the prince as he leads his people out of Ascalon, there are lots of rescue missions. Missions leading small groups of Ascalon soldiers.

What part doesn't have a hard backstory? Pre-searing Ascalon? Thats because its showing how wonderful and nice the world is before the Charr NUKE it.

What other game is doing a better job??!! I have to know so I can sign up and play it!!!

  • BayonetReconBayonetRecon Member UncommonPosts: 128

I have to agree with Torak. What other game out there involves your character in the cut scenes like GW does? It really makes you feel like your character is part of the story. The instanced zones work out really well in that it's you and your teammates vs. the mission. You don't run through the mission and find yourself having to wait for another group(s) to clear a camp or spawn. In the instanced missions, events and creatures exist for the purpose of the mission. In other MMORPGs you'll find the same spawn points are re-used for multiple quests. Same creatures, doing nothing, but when you kill them the items dropped might be different based upon the quests.

I remember the first cooperative mission I did was the one for the N. Wall. It was so different than what I've seen in traditional quests. Locate the Charr and then report back on their location. Rather than trying to kill them all, you're in a race back to the Wall. You're basically running for your life with the Charr hot on your heels. The cut scenes were awesome.

i cant really complain about this game i like more then i thought i was going to. My purpose of buying this game was to be able to play another mmo without playing. so the times i get bored or frustrated with DAOC i can go to this game.

I know its not the best but its not the worst and dosent have a fee, always good to have a backup.
