I wanted to open a discussion and get other viewpoints in here.. Was watching a friend beta TERA today. Is it just me or does TERA look, feel and play like Aion 2.0?
Level 23, and he used a total of 3 moves to kill those mobs, whoopey doo
This all new super duper combat system doesn't quite do it for me.
Can't fault the graphics though.
He uses a little more than 3, anyway thats the point, you will have the same 3 skills and you wont be able to kill that mob, so its players skill > char skills, i know a whole new concept for MMO's
TERA priests look pretty cool. Thing is, should I pick the now iconic menir kind of guy or a good looking woman? Because after all, easterners sure know how to draw sexy females, as opposed to most castrated western versions.
Don't take these threads seriously people. The people who create them live on forums. We all know Tera is nothing like the generic crap that these people love to play.
i'v played Aion for quite a few months and now i'v played Tera for a few days.
the comparison is undeniable. there are A LOT of similarities in everything, from art work, to combat animation, to the whole feel of the world.
one thing Tera has that is different is the reticle combat which makes you actually have to aim, very fresh and fun. Tera is also much prettier then Aion. the level of detail in everything is just astounding and it still plays just as smooth. if you like eye candy this game is for you, it's just so damn pretty.
the one thing i dont like about Tera is the fact that they use combat skill animation as a global cooldown (much like Aion does). this basicly roots your character to the ground whenever you use a combat skill.
wile the animations for most skills are very pretty this does not make for fluid feeling combat (like WoW where you can move wile using most of you skills). it is very robotic and static much like Aion's combat. basicly you either move or are stuck in a combat animation. now i know Aion actually changed their combat quite a bit to make it feel less "rooted by animation" so i'm hoping that Tera will also tweek this in the future and make it less static and more fluid. having said that i do realize that it will never be as fluid as wester mmos are.
Playing: Darkfall New Dawn (and planning to play Fallout 76) Favourite games have included: UO, Lineage2, Darkfall, Lotro, Baldur's Gate, SSX, FF7 and yes the original Wizardry on an Apple IIe
@Jak: What you call fluid system i call it mess, i think the animation must be part of the combat system, it must part of the cast time of the skill, it is a step in the rigth direction, i really think that different animations for different skills like Tera have are better than if you are casting stuff and your toon is doing random movements with their arms or not movements at all while he is jumping like a rabbit seeking for sex.

well altogether it's 2 different kinds of combat. i personaly find the "stuck in animation" thing quite annoying especially when i'm playing a melee and am forced to chase kiters all day. i do undestand how it takes skill to learn to use the "stuckness" but i still find it annoying. as long as every class has the same "stuck in animation" mechanic then it's ok you have to stop moving to damage but so do they. in the end i will play Tera when it comes to NA just not sure how long i'll play it for.
That is my prediction. Everyone keeps saying ohhhhh En Masse will make sure it is westernized!!!!
Not gonna happen.
They do have Patric Wyatt (one of the guys behind Starcraftm, Warcraft 3 and Guildwars) in charge of doing it so it isn't impossible that they at least fix it up a bit, he is an excellent programmer and game designer.
The question is still if it will be really grindy or not, I fear it will. But the game deserves a chance so lets see when we tried it out.

So? My 80 shaman in WoW used 3 moves to kill mobs too. Flame Shock, Lava Burst, Lightning Bolt x infinity. At 23, it was just better to use Lightning Bolt over and over and over.
Doesnt mean its the full extent of its abilities, nor is that the extent of the Berserker's abilities.
Using wow as an example for complex combats is pretty stupid :P

I agree with judex99 having the animation just makes more sense. I would rather have that than the casters being able to jump around while blasting you with spells. Also from what I've seen, there is a good balance between the time you can move and the animation. I saw a fight between a cleric and archer that showed this very well.
But remember, no all Korean games are alike. If so, then it's safe to assume all North-American games are like WoW. Or all Eurpean MMOs are like AoC.
Arent they? all the wow clones arent they made in the us? and all the grind games from asia, and all the graphic snob games from europe? thats atleast how i see it...

Wow thats how you see it? How many MMO's have you played. Because you must played alot to have that view.

More bs just in time for another release. im sure we will see loads of threads like this as release gets closer.
Heh' Would have thought Tera has many similarities to Aion. Just as American films, or movies have their own style, as with European or Asian (Bollywood). Thats the nature of the beast. Consider how fortunate we are ( am an old gamer) to be able to access and play these games. I am an active Aion player and very much enjoy it. Played EQ 1 and 2 for years, AoC , Eve. Lotro,WoW and a few others.
MMORPG trolls aside, the standard of MMO's these days are awesome with each offering its own strengths and weaknesses. The best posts here review or preview a release without silly trolling or just slagging off a game because it's not the posters game, but offer a balanced view with some detail.
Am sure there was a point to this post but have forgotten it...... said I was an old gamer. Just have fun, we are spoilt for good MMO's.

It's refreshing to see an overall positive post. Similarities don't always make a game a clone.

More like Lineage 3 maybe? I don't see the Aion comparison. I like what I see in TERA, I'm looking forward to playing it.
I can see calling the graphics simiklar to L2 or Aion but, going on gameplay alone, the game has more in common with WOW than it does with Aion/L2.
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein "Graphics are often supplied by Engines that (some) MMORPG's are built in" - Spuffyre
Isn't TERA actually just Lineage 3 but under a different name after having been stolen from the Lineage 2 dev's??
No.
"The court recognized “the former employees had contacted with Square Enix Japan with an intention to sell and in fact ended up with leaking company secrets, which caused damage to NCsoft.” However the court didn’t find any evidence that some of defendants actually used the Lineage 3 data they stored on a hard drive disk when leaving the company, for a new game in a studio they started."

This. The first thing that excited me in that video was how few skills/abilities/items were hotbarred. I'm tired of needing to hotkey 100+ buttons.

Dont see any similarities. why start this topic?

That was my opinion aswell. Not saying Aion is a bad game, but if i had to choose I would play the original with the wings.

Dont you guys remember, NcSoft took 1 year to westermize the game for Aion. What it bring to us, nothing ...
They were saying " westermising" a game isnt only changing the quest log.
in result they did only that, they changed the song and quest log. There you go westermisation complete.
Took 1 year for that process, I just hope they will really change the game for the western player.
