Star Wars: The Old Republic: Taral V Video & Flashpoints

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Flashpoints are those areas that are deemed to be too dangerous for single players to enter. The official Star Wars: The Old Republic site has been updated with information about some of the Flashpoints that players will find in the game and have released a brand new video about Taral V.

Taral V is just one of several unique Flashpoints in Star Wars: The Old Republic. Every Flashpoint takes a group of Imperial or Republic players through its own self-contained adventure, culminating in one of several outcomes based on player choices. You won’t have to miss out on any of the story, though – Flashpoints exist in specially instanced parts of the galaxy and can be repeated as often as you’d like. Flashpoints feature enemies that require skill and cooperation to defeat, and are much more challenging than single-player missions, but they offer valuable loot and rewards. Gather up your allies and get ready for explosive multiplayer action in Flashpoints!

Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.

Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.

Was that Yoda? Wow, that dude is old...  Nice graphics though.

  • graphics getting better? man... idk about that. i really want to play this game, but the visuals are awful compaired to a lot of the modern mmorpgs. don't get me wrong, i still plan in playing this, but in the video Yoda looked like crap. like the generic version of Yoda. lol. Master Toda.

My question was a bit tongue in cheek :), I figured he wasn't 3000 years old but as there's such a lack of info on Yoda's race I thought I'd throw that in there for laughs.

  • whilanwhilan Member UncommonPosts: 3,472

Hes a member of the yoda species (I kid you not, this is the term they used because the actual name is unknown), thus he looks similar. This version obviously is of the same makeup of yoda.  However yoda was 900 years old by the end of the movies.  Thus he could have only gone back 900 years.  This is set 3.5k years before the movies, thus he wouldn't have been born yet.

You saw another version of the yoda species (told you thats their name ;P) in kotor, he was brown color though.

    Heres an example

at about 4:18.  The voice in ToR  is different but maybe the game explains why this is.

Edit: noticed your comment about your post.  Still good info to know.

Second Edit: it is also possible that the VO for the yoda species character is a placeholder, though they haven't said this, so take it for what it is.

I like the visual style they are going for, if you try and make them look too realistic you shorten the lifespan of the visual style until more realistic stuff comes along. I remember thinking wow these graphics look great back when I played Playstation games, then now I look at the same game and think it looks terrible. But if they go for a more cartoonish style, it doesn't matter as much. This is why I think WoW's visual style still has an appeal to a lot of people. Not only do cartoonish visual styles have a longer lifespan, but they probably don't require as much processing power, which is useful in MMO's where there is a potential for a lot of people on screen at the same time.

Without the fast paced music and fancy voice acting, that looked extremely dull and boring.

    Terrible animations....

I thought about the graphics of SWTOR. If you have simple Textures, you can make larger areas, larger worlds and so you can have a huge mmorpg at release. It looks a little bit styliced textures but the models and world are good. In a few years after release they can update the textures with fresh and realistic high def textures. But i think we will have to pay a expansion :D

I'm really looking forward to trying a game that wants to put the story first... replayability is in question but I honestly don't care. I'm not trying to find a new world to live in, I like the one I have. As long as it is fun to play through the first time, I will be back for each update.

I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

I wish they would stop spending their time making hype videos and get the damn game rereased.

  • Jason2444Jason2444 Member Posts: 372

Oh you mean like every trailer known to man has music?

Jesus christ. You know, guys, without the game play and people, this game looks PRETTY dull. Just sayin

And you're just grasping at straws, the animations have been VASTLY improved

So just go ahead and get it out since i know you're gonna end up plugging GW2 or something else that will undoubtably be better than SWTOR

MMOs played: WoW, Star Wars Galaxies, Star Wars: The Old Republic, Guild Wars, Planetside, Global Agenda, Star Trek Online, RIFT, Everquest 2, Age of Conan, Warhammer Online, EvE online, APB
Best MMO Companies: Trion Worlds, ArenaNet, CCP
    Worst MMO Companies: Electronic Arts

Replay is question? How so? Every single class has a completely unique story arc from lv 1 to max level. This will most likely boast the most replayability of any mmo to date.

We should have a clearer answer feb 1, as thats when the reports come out and they are suppose to be showing when their future titles come out and ToR will be in that.

  • i would like to see something better this being 2011. Tera, GW2 and Rift are all nice lookin and i would expect tthe same from this. the cut scenes are a big draw for me, but it doesn't look as good as it could.

  • SwaneaSwanea Member UncommonPosts: 2,401

Gets better everytime I see it.

Can see improvements in animation, but still a little ways to good.  But combat looks fun.

I dig it.  People truely don't understand graphics if they they these are bad.  There is more than just realistic looking trees and moving grass...

You mean, like a two year old's drawings?

Some of you should acually, dare I sugest it, think before you critisize graphics from what is basically still alpha footage. Although a bit more refined with every new video. So please try to keep an open mind about where the graphics are, don't try to stick your foot in your mouth all at once.

Not to mention why they chose the graphical design in the first place. Sotry to reserve your critisism till you have actually had a chance to see more than just a few minutes here, a few minutes there. Or at the very least till you have had a chance to play it.

And the Voice acting is not a placeholder. It's already been confirmed all the voices are as they will be heard in the game. check out the dev tracker for confirmation.

Finally one thing I will agree with was the Yoda species as it is known. In this video is not without it's flaws in my opinion.  Too much leg. It just doesn't lool right.

I blame lucas for that. Only because has has kept too many secrets about the species to himself.

I think it could be fixed with maybe a longer robe.  The voice while not true to the species is ok. To be honest though we have only ever heard or known of only two of their kind to ever speak.

In the end I know haters will always hate and the real reason some of you love the internet so much is so you can hide from the world while you dispaly just how adolesent you really are.

    It's sad really,But it can't be helped...

Pretty good video but yea that Yoda ish guy reminded me of the Clone Wars series Yoda, and that makes me shudder inside a little. Still looking forward to the game though.

Oh wait, I forgot, we live in 2003 and have pentium 2s at our house for 500$..my bad...crisis,black ops, halo 3 selling million copies are my halucination..yup we definately need BS gfx..

and did I mention AoC was the fastest selling MMO besides WoW?? (the failure had nothing to do with gfx to counter your future argues..)

I think I actually spent way more time reading and theorycrafting about MMOs than playing them
