They've been working on this expansion for 6 months already and it won't be out until Q2/3 2011 but we already know it is going to be mostly a visual/audio reworking of the current game with no major new gameplay mechanics. Any desire I might have had to resub to Darkfall is now totally gone... don't they read their own forums? people have been crying out for more sand in the sandbox and character specializations for as long as I have been following the game... what are they smoking?
They just don't seem to get it. Thoroughly disappointed.

have you seen and heard darkfall? its ugly and sounds bad, no one wants to play in a sandbox full of poop sand any more then an empty one, but given the options, the kids will always pick the pretty empty sand box over the smelly poopy sand
Can't disagree too much, although they have been adressing the issue of grind lately, which is one of the community's main issue, definitively a bonus. They also mentionned some minor reworking of the Alignment system, and new specialized armors. It's not a major rework of important features, but I feel that focusing on these little things could bring back enough players, and allow AV to increase their programming speed with the higher income.
I dont think we will ever see prestige classes. . . It will be the armor that counts.
And dont wish for prestige classes. Its to hard to balance. If everyone can go in the same direction the balance will not count so much. They need to add more armor, more unique armor for specific stuff like, Tank, Melee, archer, mage.
And they are working on that and im sure its the right way to go. Add so much so there WILL be a difference but dont add specific path to choice like "being tank" cause its to hard to balance.
I dont agree on you that content is what is needed most. Animation is not good enough for 2011, sounds could be improved ALOT and graphics aswell can be improved rather i think its oki for now.
Another thing. Some content added is: Demon, meditation, treasure hunter, ice dragon im not sure you can call it content, but the fact that much is added should be appreciated. Im pretty sure AV will add more content as soon they are rdy with the new skins and animations.
Your right content should be added, but its not higest priority for now. And im agree with that.
Ave have been talking about prestige classes for YEARS now, and confirmed they were going in sometime last year, so if they have pulled them at this late stage after so much work IMO that will also make them look a bit stupid.
I also HATE the whole concept of being a different "class" just because you're wearing a different set of armor. It's just plain stupid. It should be possible to specialise in something at a more serious level than a different set of armor. Like an earth mage, who gets +20% to all earth spells but cannot use any other elemental school.
DF doesnt need classes. May be new combat skills or spells but not classes. Classes will destroy this game and will make it not better then WoW or LA2 or other clones.
If you can change your class at any time I fail to see the problem. Lack of classes/roles/specialisations debateably has already destroyed the game. Classes would bring some much-needed tactics and roles to combat.
you can change your role in pvp without "class" so lack of skills didnt destroy the game. Guys who are playing DF love it and guys like you always crying and wanting something more. Try to find it in another game may be?
You mean the <1000 Darkfall players that are left? The last time I played Darkfall, a couple of months ago now, the servers were virtually dead. Compared to how the server was at release I'd guess the game has lost ~90% of its population.
If that doesn't show there is a problem, I don't know what does.
And seeing how the forums have been asking for proper roles/specialisations and more sandbox features since beta it is hard to work out why Ave are spending a year remaking the world when players were not even saying it was a problem.
Classes add more to the game than just roles, they can also add class-specific skills, and a real sense of specialisation and character development that armour never can.
There is a reason why every MMO to date has had either skill caps or classes. It's because making everyone the same, single class that can do everything sucks.
So, you never heard the "empty world" whine before ? The forums are full of it, where have you been. AV plans on world building is to redistribute the spawns so that is less of a problem.
It wasn't ever my prob tho. For me its more realistic if the landscape isnt cluttered with mosnsters on every step but i still have a picture of the tons of such posts. AV listed obviously.

The internal expansion is called 'Darkfall Arena'. Many of the player base seem to think that this means there will NOT be an arena because of the naming patterns of previous expansions and because most darkfall players do not want one. Yet at the same time the same people are optimistic that the expansion will be good despite the suggested pattern of expansion naming conventions not representing what the expansion is (which I actually would debate but that is a differnt conversation)
Its bizzare twisted logic I know, most MMO major expansions that are called 'arena' with the comment of 'create a level playing field for all' actually do contain an arena or at least an arena style mentality. Darkfall players however feel that its not the case for 'Darkfall Arena'.
I am not optomistic about this upcoming expansion and might be looking for another game however I will give it a shot clearly. It might not be what I think and hell it might even be exactly what I think but I might still enjoy it. I am keeping an open mind.
I wish more darkfall players would keep an open mind to the possiblity that 'darkfall arena' might actually contain an arena however, such open mindness from the darkfall community i think would make the community slightly better.

Why everyone believes devs should do what the players want is beyond me. It's their game.. you think they will let a bunch of randoms come in and destroy what they set out to do in the first place? Devs that listen to what players want all the time are never innovative.
As far as I'm concerned, Darkfall is just "skin and bones." They need to flesh it out more. More items. More skills. More land area.
The item system is really linear. I know they have a lot of different weapons and armor, but there is little in the way of balance between them. What's the point of having 5 r20 swords if they all do the same thing? Why wear leather armor or robes?
The skill system is the same way. There's a lack of craft skills. A lack of weapon skills. Magic can always be improved. It's great that they have one-handed swords and two-handed swords. Why can't they flesh each weapon type out some more?
The game world also seems too small, especially considering the the area players can "own" is predefined. They should let players put up defensive structures and other types of buildings anywhere, except within a certain area around NPC towns. In addition to this, they should greatly increase the types of materials that can be harvested and then have some of those appear in certain areas but not in others.

I just burst out laughing at this part. There is just so much ignorance in your post, it's appaling. Prior to Launch, Aventurine had been advertising the game as a very hardcore game, no grind/pick what you want, decisions that carries consequences, racial alliance conflicts, cargo ships, hiring Guard NPCs and Merchant NPCs for your clan, Prestige Classes, etc.
That's what AV "set out to do in the first place". That's how they advertised the game prior to launch, and that's exactly what the websites and teaser/trailer videos showed. Launch....was a different thing, a completly different game, almost the opposite of what they advertised. AV didn't even bother changing their now outdated website until 3-4 months later to reflect the game better, because what was there was a completly different game. What players want, is merely for AV to actually go back to the ideas they had set out in the first place, instead of introducing Fun Hulks and Fun Flags!
DarkFall doesn't have such a small population because it's a niche, but because Aventurine litteraly failed on every level to launch a game with what they advertised. And still, we have yet to see any Prestige Classes and AV has mostly avoided such discussion since HellFreeze. Or how in December 2009, the Graphical Update was "Ready" and Should be introduced in a patch soon after Conquer The Sea which then was introduced in October 2010 in HellFreeze, and really didn't change anything important. Or how Envrionmental Sounds were "Ready" and to be introduced in one of the next patches right after HellFreeze, and it turns out we'll have to wait until DarkFall Arena (which will likely be added in Q3 instead of Q2). Or how AV were actually working on Prestige Classes since CtS, mentionned the same thing in HellFreeze, than we stop hearing anything about it but "Specialized Armors" are now being discussed. And these are just exemples, AV isn't even able to do what they set out in the first place.

I don't play Darkfall but I would say the expansion firstly needs to bring Darkfall up to the 21st century standards and it is doing just that. I am not a hardcore sandbox player or anything like that and therefore I'm easily hindered by bad visuals and audio. Plus judging from their last blog article they seem to "have gathered information from existing players and their concerns through the last years". I think the new expansion will bring many new players to the game and at the same time satisfy the existing ones and ofc after that they can work on new gameplay content, minigames etc. I don't play Darkfall currently but will definitely give it a try with the new expansion.
The main thing that keeps me from resubbing to DF is remembering how terrible my character looked, getting killed non stop would not be so bad if the character model of the dude killing me didn't look so bad, and I didn't look so bad while I was running !!!
That all sounded sarcastic but I'm dead serious. Give me FFXIV character graphics inside Darkfall and you have the greatest game EVER !!! well, goodest game ever at the very least !!

we have to be a little careful here about what we are suggeting regarding 'updated' graphics. Because the word assumes graphics on current MMOs. well step back a second and lets ask what games are we talking about here WoW, EQ2, Aion. These games are farily cartoonish would everyone agree.

Sorry, let me clarify, WoW is cartoonish, I hate WoW and its graphics, EQ2 cartoonish? I dont think so, Aion cartoonish, I can see what you mean but not in the same way as WoW.
As far as graphics upgrades for DF, I dont want anything cartoon looking, I like the art style DF went with, they just did a bad job with the models.

Presume they are just aiming to improve their graphics and modernise it a bit first. I know graphics don't make the game, but nowadays companies need to rely on their graphics to get any sort of suck-cess.
As far as I'm aware, new quests and gameplay content don't take the same amount of time as re-rendering all new textures and models. And, since they have started already on one, it doesn't make too much sense to waste their resources into trying to do both at the same time.
All in all, it'll be something you'll have to do be patient about.
. They are adding more content in the next expansion simply by virtue of completely changing the map and making territory more meaningful, adding in a build meta game through armor/presitage classes, more epic mobs, and various fixes to existing content.
And the reason they are improving graphics is because, unlike some of us on these boards, most care about graphic quality and sighted graphics and animations as one of the top reason for quiting the game or not even playing it.

i know it matters to many and certiantly the ones who grew up with 3rd person view but frankly i dont care about the character models.
this is almost exactly topic for topic the difference between Morrowind and Oblivion. Two groups of gamers, one like Morrowind better beause of the world size and diversity of world look, other perfer oblivion because its eaiser to get around in and although all the trees look the same they are highly rendered.
