did anyone else come back to MMOs thinking this game had something to offer? now you just want to crawl back into your old stinky cave full of Ultima Online, Shadowbane, and Dark age of Camelot posters?
I think it's my time to retire from this genre, I'm starting to feel like one of them old army veterans who talks all the time about how good things were back in the day when kids appreciated things..
just another mmorpg box to put on my wall.. next to Warhammer online and Aion.. sigh..

I hate to say it, but MMOs, or maybe it's just the current ones, are losing their luster for me.
I got into Rift beta 4 and 5 but have probably played less than 2 hours . It's not just Rift either.
indeed..
unfortunately it will just go next to rift after the small amount of unique traits it has wears off, I will buy it, but only as a percussionary measure incase it is anything more then what I dread it to be..
I agree, I don't even have the energy to bash them or explain it anymore..
I play these games with my girlfriend and I completely envy her, she loves this game, I can't even stand being in it for longer then an hour without finding something to bitch about..
nah, arenanet is a good company. they actually play their games, care about their fans, and have employees that enjoy what they do and have pride in their product. i've been playing mmorpgs since 2000, and from what i've learned about the genre, i honestly think arenanet has the proper direction, the talent, the experience, and the money, to make this game work. if arenanet can't do it, no one else can.

I'm not playing Rift bata yet because of RL situations.
BUT what the hell are you expecting. MMO's play the same and they will always play the same. Many think that technology had taken this major leap. WHAT MAKES EVERYONE THINK THAT !.............The only thing that changed is you can buy a better graphics card. But developers have to be careful in what they make because not everyone can afford better graphics or even care too.
Did you ever think that 99% of gamers are noobs and play video games for a little bit of enjoyment. And the same 99% of them don't read mmorpg or even care too ? Most people walk into their local Game Stop, read the back of the box and say " Honey, lets buy this game ".
Don't get me wrong, I'm one of you, I play mmo's, I read what's up and comming.....BUT TRY AND LOOK AT THE BIG PICTURE. It's really us. If you can't handle it, don't just stop playing video games. Maybe it's time to smash your computer, take up weight lifting, Kung Fu or best yet find a girl friend !
Would you like to try an experiment ? Play your favorite mmo for 8 hours straight, then go tell someone at work your adventures. See if they look at you as if your nuts !
I'm probably a little older than most of you........I remember when ATM's were free. This lasted for five years before everyone got hooked before they started charging a fee. Now its up to $3 ( they hook you first ). Guild Wars 2 will start off free, get everyone hooked. Then can I say it ?.........Cash shop !
Dude are you just completely ripped? I honestly don't have a clue what you were arguing...
But my point is, MMOs shouldn't, "always," be the same like you said.. calling MMOs a genre at the moment is the equivalent of calling Call of Duty its own genre, every MMO is the same like every Call of Duty game is the same, there is no Mass Effects or Dead Spaces or Halo Reach's that make the different FPS games unique and different. Obviously there are Eve's and Darkfall's but they are made by such small companies and it shows in the quality of the game.. Darkfall mostly, if that game has graphics like Rift I would be in heaven.
I think the entire MMO genre has taken a leap backwards since early Dark age of Camelot, the problem started late in DAoC and Everquest, it started with Instancing.. people wanted things to come to them easier and faster, everyone wanted to be the best.. making the reward and satisfaction in the end completely meaningless..
Instancing, Auction houses, Server Clusters, Addons, Paid Name or Server transfers.. they're all plagues to the MMO genre.
Honestly though, I think Arena Net will make a great game, they are actually doing something different, it may not be for me but at least they are doing something different, Guild Wars has always reminded me more of a Arcade style MMORPG then a traditional MMORPG, much like WoW reminds me of a Childrens MMORPG.
Some peoples still seems to like these kinda of game that have nothing new to afford. It's WOW all over again. I was in Beta 5 and me too ....played maybe 2 hours and was bored out of my mind.
GW2 isn't free, you have to buy it, there just isn't a sub for it so no monthly fee. Also GW1 proved that a monthly fee isn't necessary to keep servers running or anything. Also GW2 will have a cash shop, the devs have stated it will, however if you have played GW1 or spoken to someone who has played it for a while you would know that it's cash shop isn't game breaking and only offers cosmetic things and the devs have stated that GW2's cash shop will be the same because they are against pay to win games.
I believe the only game to save this genre is going to be Bioware with their SWTOR.
I know I sound like a fanboy, but come on, guyz.
It's Bioware.
Bioware.
Groovy.
Plenty of people use that excuse to say that SWTOR won't be good. Bioware does make good single player games and I give them props for trying to make an MMO but just because it is Bioware making it doesn't mean it will be any good. It's nice to have confidence in a company and their game but a healthy dose of skepticism should be mixed in with that.
I like sandbox games, I have been sitting around for like 1.5 years or so, playing UO on and off, mostly off, and not playing anything new, except to try a trial of some stuff....Nothing really peaked my interest.
I am playing Rift, I like some of the stuff in the game, and I am not certain, but I probably will buy it. It has a lot of stuff I dislike, but I only played WoW beta, I had more choices for 'better' games imo, that fit my play style. So I am not as use to this type of game, as people that played WoW. I had Vanguard, which I loved, but the lack of development ect.... I had leave...If someone could wrangle it away from Sony and put money into it, I would go back in a heartbeat.
So I have been where you guys are, and guess what, its been a long 1.5 years...I am tired of not having something to play. I am going to play some of the Earthrise beta, and if I like that enough, I will get it, and I will see.... Developers make games to make money, and the new generation of gamers are more need it now, less depth, more rails/hand holding, scared of contested content and open dungeons for the most part. Not as a rip into them, just thats what they started with and know, and it mirrors society a little more now adays.
So the wife (she still is playing UO a lot), and I have missed a newer mmo to play, and are gonna make the plunge back in. I kept telling myself this title coming out is going to do it, ahh another company gets what I want, and it hasn't happend, and I don't see anything for certain happening, but more wait. Arch age may be it, but how far is that off, and it still has a lot of questions, swtor seems to have a lot of single player non-mmo aspects, I am open to giving it a shot, but I think its more of what a sandbox leaning mmo gamer will not like. GW2 we will see, yeah theirs hype, but so was their hype for WAR, I am sure I will buy GW2, I am certain I can get my money out of it, either way....I am just not optimistic.
So Rift is my best choice, and looking at Earthrise at the moment. Good luck guys, dollars drive things, and unfortunatley the smaller indie type companies usually have tons of bugs/hacks/cheats/dupes ect... They have the EQ progression server some are excited about, but I would only be excited if they were to go back, and do new content, not too exctied to play the content I already had again...graphics don't rule my choices, as I prefer UO with the 2d client still.
so far swtor doesnt look like anything special.
I am in the exact same boat. 7 years ago Rifts would have been great for me. I think they did a great job. UO, DAoC, Meridian. I think I used up by "Fresh" days on those games.
I have found Darkfall somewhat fresh which is nice. EVE also once I finally got into it after about 5 tries. MO could have been it for me. It had that feeling for sure and they are still working on it. In a year or so they might be there.
To be honest with myself I have to ask. . if UO was the best MMO for me so far why am I not playing it right now on a T2A shard. I could be. The fact is it had as much to do with the freshness and community at the time. Everyone was exploring something new etc. I guess I need something truly next gen. . not just a next gen feature.
I need a game where no one can look up the map, locations etc. online and actually communicate in game.
I just don't think it will happen. So. . .single player games. . Darkfall here and there and watching MO.
Wa min God! Se æx on min heafod is!
I will add one to this as well. I love Bioware. They did create an entirely new company of sorts for SWTOR though. They based them in Austin when everyone else was in Edmonton. I am sure it will be polished, look nice and be fun. . but that doesn't make it fill the MMO gap for me.
I see it as a game that will appeal to a lot of the new generation of online gamers.
Mind you, if I don't have much time and treat it like a single player game I will likely love it as well. But go to Bioware's web page. . they have made a few other games that were not so great. You just likely have not heard of them.
Wa min God! Se æx on min heafod is!
First thing I want to make clear is that I have good faith in Bioware and loved both of their latest series (Mass Effect and Dragon Age) and did not mean to trash them in any way.
Bioware is famous for their amazing Single Player RPG, and as far as my knowledge extends, Single player and Massively Multiplayer is vastly different. Not that I want SWTOR to fail, I missed my chance to play KOTOR I & II (graphics and gameplay are just too outdated and slow for me to enjoy them after Dragon Age and Mass Effect) and would love to play SWTOR when given the chance.
But your argument really makes you sound like a fanboy =
Please don't hand potential trolls their proverbial wooden club to bash SWTOR
Saying Bioware is gonna save a MMO genre is like saying LeBron James can go play Tennis and beat Roger Federer. (while you can never be sure :P)
How much WoW could a WoWhater hate, if a WoWhater could hate WoW?
As much WoW as a WoWhater would, if a WoWhater could hate WoW.
Yeah, this was the final nail in the coffin for me. I'm done with the MMO genre. Been a keen MMO'er since ultima, but the genre is stale.
I'll give Rift its dues though, it will definitely be one of the most polished MMO's to be released in a long while. But it brings nothing new to the table, just a sense of Deja Vu.
Thank God Planetside is coming back!!
Yes, in every MMO now I am looking for a different take. Perhaps not always the best take, but at least different. Yes, many are waiting to see GW's 2. I also like a game that was in open beta a while back named Mytheon. It was simply a different game then your standard mmo, that is why I liked it. I found the fun in that and await it's release. I'm also the type of guy that doesn't live in any one world to long, to many other things out there to try. I'm also very open to just coop games, I don't need mmo's, just my small band of family/friends is enough for me. Rift might catch a decent crowd who is in WoW and wanting to find something else that is familiar.
GW1 has been running with the same business model for almost 6 years now. Why are people still so convinced that B2P can't work?
I've been trying in vain for years now trying to replace the sense of immersion I had in Star Wars Galaxies before the CU. Tried everything, but nothing took. WoW came close, then veered off into something that is no longer a vibrant world. Trion may have hired too many industry know-it-alls and not enough people capable of thinking outside the box. Rift is in many ways a step backwards as far as basic game systems go. They apparently haven't figured out yet that customers won't let them get away with the same slipshod development that WoW has got away with.
I'm looking forward to Guild Wars 2, but to be honest, I'm more excited about Kalypso's Dungeons, EA's Sims Medieval, and Runic's Torchlight 2. I guess I'm too old to deal with all the aggravation anymore.

One thing about that, it really isn´t a new Dungeon Keeper. Oh, and you may want to wait a bit until they have fixed some of the horrible bugs in the game. Got released way to early without proper testing
About the topic, yes the "magic" wears off, i´m just not into the whole theme park/handholding games. Though after a longer break from mmo´s (which was really nice ) i´m looking forward to Rift.
I don´t have the illusion that i will play this game for years, but it should offer a few months of good entertainment for me. At last i hope so, in the end it depends on the community that builds in the beginning.
I hope Guild Wars 2 will really be as good as people hope
