how is the social aspect of this game? is there room for meaningful cooporation? is it basically designed to be soloable? is it just another single player mmo, where everyone over level 40 just stands around in town all day? is there a player run economy?
im very interested in this game, but dont to play another game that reinforces my solitude please tell me your experiences, and any other questions i didnt think of.

Due to the very nature of the game it is very social because of the the Rift's spawning, and the other faction invaading(NPC invaders on the PvE and PvP servers - on the PVP server the other faction has NPC and PC invaders) and bringing players together to defend towns, villages and cities. Many of the players I encountered during my wonderings in Telara were very helpful and friendly. Sure there were a few arseclowns that just have to be stirring up verbal sewage, but they can easily be ignored. For the most part however, people grouped up and some even stay grouped up after a Rift is taken down. I was with a small group that hung out near Highlands Overlook and ran quest together. We had formed up when a rift appeared. After we fought the Rift one of the people asked if anyone was running quest in the local hub. We all were, all five of us, so we just stuck together and ran out the quest there together. Chatted as we played. Very cool.
I havent played this game even a second, and I'm still on the fence tbh.
But what I do enjoy is public quests. Warhammer tier 1-2 (higher zones just had too many PQs per zone and spread the playerbase thin) PQs I've come to realize is my preference in pve these days. Easily accesible and the possibility to join/leave whenever it suits me without ruining it for others... win-win. I also found it a great way to be sociable, if you want to that is. Lots of ppl dont want to, thats fine and cant really be controlled by you, me or Trion.
Does that preorder come with a girlfriend?
Games are are as social as you make them to be. The best you can expect is for them not to promote asshatery, which this particular game does not. At least, as far as I've seen. The PvP server needs to mature to know for sure how social the gaming actually is.
when it comes to rifts and invasions they are huge. lots of monsters that kill you fast. i didnt expect to be automatically grouped with people in the nearby area. soon there were like 50 people there helping my fight off an invasion. this was one of the coolest things i have experienced in an mmo. this game is very social and i pray that when the game is released people continue to work as a team to fight off invasions.
not true. when a game makes all of its content soloable, there is no point to group, the class balances make each them essentiall redundant in pvp, since any of make a perfect stand in for any other, a poor or narrow crafting system can doom a successful player economy (if everyone can easy craft anything they want for themselves)
game mechanics allow for social games. mature players FIND such games, not create them.
It's one of the most social games I have been in. You are pretty much thrown in a world with 100's to thousands of other players with rifts spawning left and right and invading forces of elites and what have you running the streets and attacking quest hubs. You are pretty much gonna have to group up with ppl.
but get this.. say you are a player that just wants to play and not have to worry about begging to be in somebodies group.. Now they have this option you can just click join raid and you are automatically grouped with the people fighting the forces around you. You can be apart of the group and fight off the enemy forces and get credit and a gift of some kind.
Sure you can just avoid the rifts and the invaders all together but when you see all the other players around you killing them, you will more than likely take the time out to join in on the fun, either because something going on, or becuase the surprise of what you may get for killling the enemy. Or simply because you want to pick up a quest and it is being blocked by invaders.
Either way there is plenty going on and an extreme social aspect to this game.
"When it comes to GW2 any game is fair game"
that sounds pretty awsome to me. what is it that people seem to hate about this game so much? i cant believe a game can have TOO much action, especially when it forces meaningful player interaction for survive.
and about the whole standing by and ignoring rifts, there are quests for souls in which you need to close a rift, and also good loot for doing alot of the work fighting the rift monsters. whenever there was a rift nearby i joined in the public group and helped out and it was definately worth it
If by social aspect you mean cooperation, yes from what I've seen fo far Rift has a lot of that. But communication isn't happening as much as I'd like. If you wanted you could join a group and help close an easy rift and leave without saying a thing. This could be good for some/bad for others.
Well that may have been the case on your server, but on my server the chat was filled with people talking about how much fun they were having or asking questions about the game. I grouped up a few times to do quests with people I didn't even know and we discussed things. Now sometimes at rifts if you are just going around by yourself and join some random public group, people don't always say anything, but that doesn't have to be the case.
More or less I always participated in the rifts that I came across or the invading forces for the fun of it, but also competitive side of me and the idea of the goodies that i could get from completion of the stages.
And to the op, I think that alot of people are hating on this game because it is not the one that they were waiting for such as TOR/TERA/GW2 and it looks like it is proving to be a major contendor for these games. When most people didn't expect that.
I Was actually waiting on TOR , or GW2 whichever one came out, and this game has proven to be so fun and well polished that I will more than likely play this one now.. Sure, I went in there with the idea that "this game is gonna suck" , then right to the forums to smear campaign. Then after giving it a fair shot it actually turns out that I really love this game.
Some people go into these beta's with this type of mind setting. It is not the holy grail they have been waiting on so they play the game for maybe 5-10 minutes and say "Same old same old" then log out and go right to the forums to bash away at it , without having experienced what the game really had to offer.

Yes it is very social.
One important question to keep in mind is: How old will be average rift player? specially when talking about pve servers.
I played Aoc for months, both pve and pvp servers. Whilst community in pvp server was one of the worst I ever found, on the other hand the pve server was like a breeze of fresh air. With a lot of friendly and mature players.
For example in my guild the "kid" was 19 and we have a lot of 30´s and 40´s. Eldest was 56.
I think a lot of mature payers will come to rift (me included) for various reasons: old school mmo, "mature" graphics etc...
Not much as conan but A LOT more than wow, runes, two story etc...
I am not saying wow players are only kids ofc I know many older players play wow but there are others who cant stand the "childish" graphics and stuff.
2 more betas before release, give it a try.
