Why play Rift or Guild Wars 2 instead of WoW. What is there that makes these special- like top 5 features for instance.
for gw2?
1: not wow community And how will WoW Community not be here?
Completely agree with MMOExposed
2. new content I agree, this is always better. But depends on how long that feeling last. case and point Warhammer
3. better questsystem as it seems Developers returned the "!" mark over their heads. Events seem more like Public Quest from Warhammer. but hey, maybe thats better.
They are not like War's public events. It was never about the exclamation marks. What ArenaNet want to do is remove long boxes of quest info. They want you to see what's happening instead of reading about it. Single player games have this since a very long time. We need better storytelling. Look at ME. After playing that game I can't get back to reading quest boxes.
4. pvp will most likely be balanced unlike wow Nothing is ever balanced when it comes to PvP with Gear Focus and Class Differences.
GW1 had a very balanced PvP system. You could start at max level and play but you had to unlock skills/items through PvPing which made things not so balance. However, in GW2 it seems like it will be much more balanced. You know why the can have balance? Because in their competitive PvP, everyone will have access to absolutely everything right from the start - max level, access to every single item, skill etc. About the class differences, GW's competitive PvP was always about GvG which is 8v8. In this case class differences do not factor in! You need the different classes to fill in different roles. No one balances around 1v1 or 2v2.
5. no monthly fee means if you play it over more than 3 months you paid less than for wow Yes, excluding the DLC and Mall
GW1 didn't have an item mall. They only provided services which other MMOs offer as well. So there is no reason this one to have one as well. It's against their believes.
There is nothing wrong about DLCs. I prefer paying for DLCs than a monthly sub. At least I know where my money goes whereas with monthly subs I have no idea what happens to my money. MMOs offer no more than 3-4 major patches (which can come as DLCs) per year. For one year you pay $180. So at 4 patches per year, every patch costs you $45. Do you think DLCs are worst lol? And some MMOs don't even have 4 major patches per year...
Mission in life: Vanquish all MMORPG.com trolls - especially TESO, WOW and GW2 trolls.
Easy. GW 2 will have better at launch, it will have more intresting quest, it has dynamic questing way beyond Rifts repetitive PQs, better customization, player villages with a good choice/consequence system, no mindless forced gear grind, etc
I for one have been playing wow for over 5 years now, and just before new year I decided to stop playing it. It dries your pocket out and it's boring. The game hasn't changed a bit in terms of playing, it's still the same swing/shoot to kill the mobs/to get the quest done. I think what makes me (an ex wow player but as well as owner of all gw boxes and few chars) wanna play gw2 is the stuff they promise. I hope this game will bring me something new and exciting, something we've never played before, something I can play over and over with new characters and never have to make the same quests again... Having a beautifull art like world with good pvp balance and etc etc.
Now this is what makes me wanna play gw2 over WOW ANYTIME. I'm hating wow for the moment, and as I read more and more of forum posts I see I'm not the only one, and I'm kinda glad there's more people which are considered to be fools of blizzard for buying the games in which they promise whole lot of new crap but then it turns out to be just that, crap xD
EDIT: I forgot to mention NO SERVERS in gw2... So that means if I'm not satisfied with number of people willing to do dungeon quests I can switch to any instance I like... So I'm not server dependant and I have to beg people to group up (unlike in wow where you're pretty much dependant on your battle group).

Why play Rift or Guild Wars 2 instead of WoW. What is there that makes these special- like top 5 features for instance.
I can't speak for GW2- I hope to play it but I haven't yet so I'm not knowledgeable of it enough to comment.
For Rift I have only taken part in level 1-14 PvE and a couple of instanced PvP battles (The Black Garden). What I have experienced in beta 5 is that there is far more choice in building your character than in WoW, not only in character creation but in the abilities (souls) you choose as well- it's not as rigid as rolling a paladin or warrior or death knight. They also allow (from what I have read- correct me if I'm wrong) four total specs (three PvE and one PvP) as opposed to WoW's dual spec. The combinations of this alone would be equivalent to having all three of the above WoW classes as well as a PvP spec on one character.
Next, the rifts themselves are much like Warhammer's public quests but they are actually within range of the players. I played WAR from release for two months afterwards and the problem with the leveling areas was that people were way, way spread out too far and I don't find this in Rift. Also, with the rifts spawning in appropriate size to the immediate population it adds a much needed viable PvE alternative to questing, which WoW doesn't have.
Finally, grouping while leveling- Rift supports it more than WoW does from what I have experienced. During the actual rift encounters it is very easy to form a raid with a single button press which increases the possibility of grouping by magnitudes over WoW. On the downside, there are still many quests where when grouped all of the players will still need to loot quest items individually from mobs, which is a bummer but the kill quests and others you'll get credit for the other group members' kills/actions AND there is no watering down of individual experience just because you're grouped.

The vast minority of WoW fanatical players probably know of this site or anything game-wise outside of WoW. So dont look for many WoW players jumping from 'that' game of their choice.
I'd say that the vast majority of current WoW players think of WoW as their 'Social Network'; WoW is a facebook of mmo's.
Many WoW subscribers aren't really playing much of a mmorpg "game" anymore as they 'are' interested and comfortable with remaining socially connected with others that they have built kinship / friendhips with over the years in their first mmorpg; WoW. Hiighschool, college friends, relatives, work friends that have common interests, which was once gaming in WoW, though remains, I think has transcended that to being more social connected to each other in WoW; again, it's like their Facebook.
Sure they still play WoW by mingling in a Capital City waiting for their Raid queue to pop, but I think their very comfortable with their social internet connection they have to their acquaintences in WoW that overpowers their interest in venturing outside of the title for an alternate mmorpg entertainment outlet.

The game does have more than 1 game world. In fact, cross server/game world PvP is one of the game's staples. It just doesn't have more than 1 game world per region. I'm not sure if you are able to switch between regions in GW2 like you could in GW1

For Rift it woul because graphics, better customization or just because someone is tired of Wow.
GW2 have more reasons, since it will have more new features.
It have non trinity combat, just that is good enough for me. Then there is server Vs Server Vs Server PvP in a huge open area between the servers, Dynamic events as option to questing, less focus on items, better customization, modern graphics, lore written by an actual author who sold a lot of books.. No monthly fees if tht matters to you.
And no friggin elves.
Wow is rather old now, do you really think most people will play it for another 6 1/2 years? Nothing wrong with it but it is getting old even if MMOs lasts a lot longer than regular games. Sooner or later will most people move to a new game, whichever that might be. Also, Wows PvP is somewhat limited, BGs and Arenas are fun but RvR is even more fun and at least GW2s Server Vs Server battles will be great, many of us have waited since DaoC started to suck for something new like that, not exactly the same but close enough. Add Guild Vs Guild and the PvP should be very interesting.
Why anyone likes anything is of course personal and if you asks Wow players to list what they like with Wow you get a long lists. And of course is usually what people imagines better than what you actually know perfectly.
Still, GW2 will have no monthly fee so there isn't really a good reason to not try it out, Running Wow and Rift at the same time would be pretty expensive in the long run so I think they will compete more.

GW2 will have servers even if 3 servers will be connected through the mists at the same time.
You can however switch server for free, exactly how is unclear but it seems like it will take a minute or so to do it even if that isn't official yet.
asking as I'm not really followed the progress of Rift or Gw2. And was wondering what features would stand out and entice the average Wow player to play it. Having seen some Rift gameplay clips- I think I can see it's hope is that its going to appeal to those disillusioned by WoW- and that is basically what people have been saying.

If you enjoy playing wow then why worry about it?
However, if you are looking for another game then take a look at these games or others. If you don't know much about them, visit the forums here and read up on the sticky forums (GW2 has a very informative one, not sure about Rift).
2. Dodgerolling, running while shooting/casting...
3. No trinity (Tanks,DPS,Heal)
4. 3 side PvP in massive open zones like Frontiers in DaoC
5. Better graphics
6. Better Artstyle
7. No WoW crowd
8. Buy Box Only
All that and scaling. Each event will scale to the number of players in that area, plus when a higher lvl player enters a low lvl area it scales them down to that lvl.

Because WoW is pretty much the same game it was before. I also believe GW2 will be more PvP oriented than WoW.
Dynamic content & flexible character builds.
Rift makes WoW look like it released in the 90s.
GW2 will probably out do Rift (i hope cause i wanna play both!).
Playing: Rift, LotRO
Waiting on: GW2, BP
Question for me is how anyone could play say WoW?
For me its boring, ugly, uninteresting game... so lets say its matter of taste

Because people want to, what makes WOW so special? There were a few games out before WOW that were way better than it.
I do not enjoy World of Warcraft.
That is why I play other games.
I enjoyed GW more then WoW so i have have faith in Anet to deliver with GW2 too

But that's just me.
If you are already playing WoW do not play Rift over WoW. Play the original.
Wait for GW2 and play that over WoW.
This is your opinion. For me, WoW was much better than any of the MMOs which preceded it.

I am just plain tired of WoW that is about it.
Why do people ask these questions?
Play what you enjoy. This is like asking strangers what you should have for lunch.
Simply because WoW has been around for awhile and many people (including me) are tired of it..
And GW2 seems like something different, it has alot of new features.
Claire Gearhead - Level 80 Norn Engineer - Far Shiverpeaks (EU)
For Rift it woul because graphics, better customization or just because someone is tired of Wow.

I don't play WoW
Well it's a post in general, not about you in particular.
My point about researching the games a bit still stands though. Don't do a blind purchase of a game.
All that and scaling. Each event will scale to the number of players in that area, plus when a higher lvl player enters a low lvl area it scales them down to that lvl.
