Graphics kind of suck?

Chris7opherChris7opher Member Posts: 5

I know this game is still in beta but it comes out in a month. The world graphics seem fine but the character graphics need some polish in my opinion. At first glance of the game the first thing my friends and I see is the character looking and moving a bit silly.

Compared to other games such as Everquest 2, Age of Conan, and sadly even somewhat WoW, the character graphics arent as good. Age of conan on Directx10 with graphics on max the character looks next to real.

Overall my question is will the graphics on the characters be changed at all? If there is no change I know I won't be playing.

AoC ok, but Everquest 2 and Wow? is this post a joke? I guess some people will complain about anything.

Update your gfx card mate and pump the graphics up.

Here on max settings with an nvidia gtx470 the characters look as good and as detailed as AoC and Aion (perhaps between AoC and Aion). But certainly better than EQ2 and years ahead of Fisher-Price Wow, Lotro and Co.

I'm not sure i understand your complaint?

Are you talking about "graphics"? How the textrures, shadows and light are rendered? If that is the case are you playing on Ultra at the highest resolution? Becuase the game looks fine.

Are you complaining about animations? That is another thing, I think the animations are hit or miss, some look good some "not so much".

Are you complaining about the art design and how the characters were "drawn"? Because to me that is also a bit hit or miss.

Still, I would say this game is a LOT better than EQ 2 in Art design and animations. Age of Conan is meant to be more 'realistic' so the art design of rift which is stylized really can't be compared to art design that is supposed to be realistic.

I was actually impressed by the character textures and shaders. On the armor and everything. Unless you're computer is running the game at the lowest settings, it should look fine. I'm not sure what you're talking about. Maybe if you went into a little more detail?

Come on OP are you really serious how many Beta's have u tested lately, this is by far the most advanced and graphically and complete game i've ever tested even at high settings i had great graphics, superb lighting and shadeing, enhanced  terrain effects post effects etc.,Not many supposedly AAA games attainto this technical standard without their server backend collapseing after a few thousand players hammer their servers.

Also i was still holding my own FPS wise in 20 man or more Rift battles and server events also the game is still been stress tested to the max so graphics are not too relevant but this still beat the crap out of so many games i've tested, dunno what system u have but too say Rift graphics suck but compared to Aerrevan or Alganon or most AAA games this is a bloody Vanquish they are battered old escorts !!

Lastly i'm still sitting on the fence regarding RIFT but TRION have done a stunning job and i wish Rift well and hope it  attracts the Theme park fan base it deserves myself  i'm still waiting to test Earthrise, definately not up to Trion's standard and yeah the graphics may probably suck compared to Rift but graphics do not a good game make.

Awesome reason not to play a good game.

I'll be honest, if I log into the game and I don't like the graphics and animations, I turn it off. Those two things will completely kill it for me. Now, inb4 flames let me explain what I mean by that.

Do the graphics have to be good? Not necessarily. What I mean when I say that Graphics and Animation will kill is for me. I like the characters to look like they belong in the world. I don't like it when the Character almost look like they're in a bad CGI setting. I like WoW graphics because they're consistent, they all seem to mesh together well. Hard to explain, but I hope you understand what I mean.

Animation, I dont' like hitting 5 skills, and only seeing an auto attack. I dont' like hearing a block sound, but the character doesn't even have a block animation, catch my drift?

Now, to the OP. I will be trying this game out next Beta which is next week I believe. I know 5 or 6 people in my guild have already pre-ordered having played all the beta events and love it.

I've been playing the game on ultra settings, and the graphics look pretty damned good. Enough realism to get away from the cartoony WoW stereotype, and enough fantasy to keep it interesting. Shaders, lighting etc are all very good in my opinion.

Animations however, like already stated, are hit and miss. Some are really nice and well animated, others are pretty crappy, and some are missing entirely - There is no 'mount up' or 'dismount' animation, for instance.

However, the animations -are- being updated still. The male jumping animation has changed between beta 4 and 5, for instance. While still not perfect, at least the male jump doesn't look like he launched himself into the air via rocket-fart.

Ya, not trying to be rude.  It is time to update your vid card.  IF you think these graphics are worse than eq2 or wow, then something is really wrong on your end.  On max graphics this game is the best looking mmo out right now.

  • grimfallgrimfall Member UncommonPosts: 1,153

Personally, I think it is the best ever looking MMORPG.   The animations are pretty good, that  I saw, but I haven't played all the classes/races/

  • katasteelkatasteel Member UncommonPosts: 30

I have played every MMO out thus far and imo Rift has much better graphics than anything so far.

You may need to upgrade your rig if you are not seeing good graphics in game.

I think the OP may need to clarify on this one. The 'graphics' (the technical quality of the rendering) is pretty damn good in this game. Not quite as good as AoC / FFXIV, but unquestionably better than WoW / EQ2. That said, I do have an issue with some of the models / animations in the game. There are times when I felt my character looked / moved unnaturally, especially when it came to the close-combat classes. The casters seemed to have generally better animation, and felt a lot more fluid.

Graphics-wise, this game is lagging behind a lot of the single-player games (pretty much all MMOs are like this), but when it comes to MMOs, the graphics are pretty current.

The environmentals are great. Lighting and shadows are great. Textures are great.

The art style for characters and armor/weapons is flat. They went with a realism style, but that only works when you have outstanding graphics (AOC). As a result, character models and armor/weapons look pretty drab. Everyone looks the same, you have to really zoom in close on a person to be able to notice character design options like facial features and markings. And the dull animations just make your character seem lifeless.

The default camara distance only makes for a worse initial presentation.

Ultimately it reminds me of LOTRO. Great environments but weak character models/itemization graphics

Yes I agree with this post I did need to clarify. The thread meaning was more on the models and animations. The characters move unnaturally like another poster said with male jumping.

In my original post I said the world grahpics are fine. I apologize I entirely meant character models and animations which does fall under the category of graphics. I have only tried male characters but I dislike how they move.

My comparison to other games were meant to be entirely character animations also. AoC/EQ2/and WoW animations all run smoothly compared to Rift. That's why I wanted to know if this would change.

  • You're comparing Rift character graphics to WoW? Umm...okay. I've been in two of the Rift betas now and I think the graphics are beautiful. They're not DX10, but they look damn good for DX9. That character animations seemed fine to me as well, not really sure where the complaint (or comment) is coming from.

On the opposite spectrum you have TERA with their oversized weapons etc. Personally I'm fine with either style, as long as it persists throughout the game.

Huh OP... how can you even THINK that RIFT's graphics can be compared to WoW? Seriously, I don't understand... just look at some of my screenshots - mind you I only have a lousy GTS250 so it's nothing to write home about but it's still beautiful (and I don't even have everything turned on or to max). As a bonus I also uploaded one of my latest WoW screenshots and yes, in WoW I have every single thing turned to max setting.

Again - how can you even compare these two, OP? Please people - stop with these threads hating on RIFT's graphics, it's simply not true.

Worse than wow graphics? Not a chance.

Only real complaint that I have is the limited character customization during creation.

  • jacklojacklo Member Posts: 570

On starting the game, the 'first look' so to speak are the graphics. I was impressed!

I'd go as far to say one of the best graphical experiences of any mmo out there.

Overall my question is will the graphics on the characters be changed at all? If there is no change I know I won't be playing.

First let me welcome you to the forums which I see you joined today! The first thing I highlighted in red is you referring to the movement animations not graphics. The second thing I highlighted is you comparing EQ2 and WoW's graphics as being better than Rift. Again you are confused a bit here as one cannot make this argument since it is fundamentally not true and cannot be true. The graphics may not be what you think they should be but they are 7 years newer and it definitely shows. I will give you credit for your observation of AoC though, they are nice graphics.

So back to your main question. It's not the graphics you are wanting to have updated it's the animations (walking, running, etc). Most would agree the animations are fine for the genre. Personally I don't see anything wrong with them. They are as good as or better than anything else out there with the possible exception of AoC but even that's debatable imo. Again welcome to the forums!

I am not impressed with the character modelling. Call it the artstyle or whatever, I still don't feel it's up to the current gen of graphics. AoC is over 2 years old and most would say the graphics on AoC exceed Rifts.  I'd rate character modelling a 6

World graphics are reasonable, I don't think they excel greatly but they're not disappointing as such. Rate as an 8

I am disappointed in the animations. They are not as good as I would expect and not even to the standard of games alot older.  Rate as a 5.

Gameplay is busy, there was always something to do or going on, at times it seemed near overwhelming, yet at times that seemed to distract from storyline.  Rate as a 8.5

Combat mechanics. One word - boring. I really didn't feel like I was using the character, just pressing buttons. Some people might like the playstyle, I however do not.  I constantly felt like I was playing an old game, and had been there done that.  Rate as a 6.

Innovations are present in rift, and though there isn't anything overly groundbreaking, they do have a few things that are nice additions to the genre.  The rifts and dynamic content are a new way of dealing with a previously seen mechanic, and the multiple talent trees (souls) is not a drastic change at all and feels more cosmetic then anything. Rate at a 7

So to summarize, for me the game is mediocre and not overly interesting at all. There are some good aspects to it as well as bad,  and my final score would be a 6.8

However, if I person didn't concern themselves with character modelling and animations, and really appreciated the combat mechanics, then this would be a very enjoyable game for them.

I shouldn't need to emphasize that this opinion is of the beta, and release can hold a different result altogether.

All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.

I get banned in the forums for games I love, so lets see if I do better in the forums for games I hate.

I enjoy the serenity of not caring what your opinion is.

Completely agree with this post. In all honesty if Age of Conan had better population and better class balance I'd still be playing it.

So will they upgrade the animations or not?

Well, I know for sure that they changed the male jumping animation between beta 4 and beta 5, so I'd say yes, it looks like they are working on them.

To me Rift looks amazing. The style is kinda a mix of Eq2 and War. The setting is dark a gritty. I always hated the super bright colors of certain fantasy games. In rift you get that feeling that some bad stuff is going down. I don't get too concerned with what other games are pushing how many pixels and polygons, I care about the graphics and artstyle fitting the game. Also since I do come from both lotro and WAR I find the animations to be really well done. And I'm loving the combat. My dark elf Cleric (shaman) looks so bad ass at his level, he's wearing some si k looking armor that isn't over the top like it is in wow but still looks completely slick. All and all while a couple other games might be superior graphically not many games have given me that feeling that everything fits perfectly like it does in rift.

The graphics and polish are not an issue with Rift.  Theres different issues like 'same ol same ol' and being linear to worry about.
