Champions Online - Unable to resume download

zastrophzastroph Member Posts: 242

I just signed up for this game, which seemd like it might be fun for a while. But the game client is only downloadable in one peice, and apparently not resumable, so at 3.3gb I am not willing to give up my pc for a week, while it downloads.

Also, their forum is ONLY usable by players that have a subscription, sure you can read the posts, but not make any nor can you contact the publishers directly via their contact us page, again you need a sub, how pathetic!

Generally, the first part of the download is slow. It speeds up as you go.

Actually, the game client IS "resumable". If you stop or are interrupted during the DL process it will resume from where you were at when stopped.

As to the "can't post on forums" issue, I think you must create an account "f2p" or otherwise to post. If you have not done that you can not post as with most MMOs' forums.

if it takes you a week to download the game then you need to get off the dial-up. I have a slow DSL and it only took a few hours to download just let it download over night while you are sleeping the game is fun for being free. The only thing i don't like is that you can only make 2 characters.

Thee download manager has just one button "Cancel" and after clicking on this, and starting it again, it went through the initial question of whee to save the game.

As for posting, I was logged in to the forum, and tried to post a question on any alternatives for downloading, when it stated that I MUST be a subscriber to post in the forum.

dont click cancel just X out of the window.  that works with most MMO launchers, they dont have a pause button but if you just close the window (not hit cancel) it should resume next time you run it.

    hope that helps.

Its 2011 .. 3.3GB should be done in 20 minutes.

Dont blame the game, blame your 1989 internet connection.

FYI; Horrible game, youre not missing anything.

CO download manager is pretty slow for me...

    Try one of these http://champions-online.com/download

Yes, a better internet connection would help, but I live in Australia, where the higher the speed the more you pay, so I am stuck with a 1,500k/256k connection.

As I recall, there are restrictions between the "free" forums and those that are paying. There should be a forum thread area for "free" players only as I recall.

I am wondering if you actually finished installing the "installer". If you do not finish installing the first part, the installer, it will not resume whenever you quit. Once the installer is in place it should stop and resume as mentioned.

How does better computer and internet connection help? Do you want him to donate them to Cryptic?

Wow. And I actually thought you were going to talk about the actual game when I clicked onto this thread.

    Sadly I was wrong.

I actually downloaded the game (only took me 45 minutes).

I agree that it sucks but I base that against my experience with City of Heroes, not because I was expecting another City of Heroes, but because I was expecting a better game, which CO is not even close to in any way, shape, or form.

Here's my honest review after playing for a week or so.

Graphics - Badly done cell shading makes my eyes hurt, and the anti-aliasing doesn't work at all. Also the character models look like they're marketed towards grade-schoolers, which they probably are.

Gameplay - Rubberbanding due to bad server hardware and/or bad (or nonexistent) player-region server grouping makes the game already hard to play. In between lag spikes, the fighting controls are unresponsive at best. I find myself facerolling often. The gameplay design is a bad clone of CoH, with an autoattack thrown in to make it even worse.

Community - I didn't notice one. Which is bad. Millennium City zone chat is filled with silence with the occasional "hw to cast spel??". I also didn't notice any trace of supergroups or whatever they have there.

Let me tell you a story. After the guys at Paragon Studios pretty much said F-U to Cryptic when they left and made their own studio, Cryptic attempted to make Marvel Online just to try to rival CoH because they were butthurt. But then Marvel sued cryptic for some retarded reason (most likely more butthurt) that I don't care about. So Cryptic shat their pants for a bit then had to completely restructure the game over some pen-and-paper game nobody's heard about (while CoH is filled with ORIGINAL lore). More butthurt ensues afterwards.

CO is a game spawned from and basted with jealous butthurt since early development and you can tell.

Yea.. Im on a crappy DSL connection (3mbps) and I can download 3 gigs in a few hours. Miss Cable where it would only take about 20-30min but Im on one of the slower DSL connections. If it takes you that long OP then you are on 56k and shouldnt be playing MMOs with that ancient of a connection.

OP, sorry about your frustration with the lack of customer service. Thats not new in the F2P type games. Dungeons and Dragons Online is the same way. Remember the old sating, "You get what you pay for".  In this case you are not paying anything so you get very little. Also, its not like they didnt tell you ahead of time there was no support other then the knowledge base. They have a matrix of what you get and dont get on there site. http://www.champions-online.com/f2p_matrix

It's funny I just started playing when f2p started, actually enjoyed the game enough to buy a subscrption.  I haven't experienced any "rubberbanding" and Millennium City is extremely populated with people chatting.  Even at 4am the game has a lot of people.  As far as graphics go I guess they're not for everyone, I enjoy the cell shading but maybe if others don't they could turn them off in options under video settings?

Well all you have been able to see is the CO Downloader. The CO downloader is a buggy P.O.S., hybrid bittorrent client that allows for no tweaking of the up and down pipe so the upload bandwith chokes out your connection. I never got above 28 KB/s and my ports were so overloaded I couldn't browse the web or even log into my router settings to see what ports I had open.

So I canceled the download and found a torrent of the game instead. Using utorrent I downloaded the game in just over an hour.

As to how i feel about the game, they have made some improvements since launch so its ok for free, but I still wouldn't pay a nickel to play it.

Oh and as to them wasting forum bandwith or customer service for us free joyriders. Why the hell should they?

I should have looked deeper in to the game, especially the page your link points to. One og my pet hates of these type of games is a lack of backpack space, and with this game only offering 1 for f2p and 4 is subscribed (so long as you buy through item mall) I just trashed the idea of playing this crippled game....

Why the hell should they not. If some one has problems, and gets them sorted, they might actually decide to stick around, maybe even end up subscribing if they decide they like the game, but would not be able to decide if they can not even get it downloaded.

You get four as a sub no matter what.  You don't have to pay to get them.  You should get actual facts.  Better to not say anything and let everyone think you're a fool than to speak and prove them right.

Yea, it does suck. I have two high level 20 characters that I care about. About 6 months ago I was getting that MMO burn out and stopped playing. When I heard about the F2P coming, I'll be honest I was kind excited and hoped that I wouldnt lose anything on the characters I created. When I logged in the other day it wanted me to to choose the characters I was going to use since slots are limited. So I picked my level 28 and it told me it was a gold account character but can convert to silver account. Of course I didnt convert. I dont want to lose all those secondary powers and other things because of the limitation. So, not only did they screw the new free players (dont get me wrong, there should be limitations for F2P but not that strict), but they screwed the veteran players who started with release. They should allow the ex-gold members carry over what they earned. Since I already pay a sub on another game, I guess Cryptic will be waiting a long time for me to sub if I come back, because for sure I wont play the F2P service.
