Can we stop the clone talk? And not just between Rift and WoW.

Cosmonaut79Cosmonaut79 Member UncommonPosts: 175

I'm writing this because like many others, we're tired of hearing about how this game is a clone of that game and so on and so on.  We all have the cognitive capacity to understand that some of the mechanics in Rift and other games are similar to those in WoW.  And guess what: We're fine with that.  I enjoyed WoW, but I played the game off and on for 3 years and I'm ready to move on.  I don't think there's any game that could hold my interest for much longer than that, new content and expansions or not.  There's nothing wrong with liking the feel and mechanics of a certain game, but wanting to enjoy them in a new setting with new places to explore and new mobs to defeat.

So let's stop the clone talk.  We're all gamers and we've been around.  We know when games have similar aspects and we're all able to make our own minds on whether we wanna stick with what we know, or go out into unknown territory.

It would be nice to talk about actual game mechanics.

Pros and cons and how the game could be improved but sadly discussions like that seem to be best left for the official Rift forums.

You try to kick up a discussion on soul specs or features you want in the game and every discussion derails into "does rift suck or not" debates.

I've tried but thats all most of these people are capable of here.

I'll stop the clone talk when companies stop copying other people's games.

You think we're making it up?

Or do you just misunderstand the concept of game mechanics?

Well since in the OP I acknowledge that this occurs, I'm pretty sure that means I don't think you're making it up.

Are you blind? the majority of the negative posts on rift are blanket comments like "this game is just a shitty clone!". Only a hanful of posters have brought up good reasons why they dislike Rift.

If you actually read threads in this forum those handful of people havent been flamed to death.

if your not old enuff to know that there were many MANY other mmo type games out there besides wow and rift or wow and insert any other mmo < here > after wow's release ..evey game has been "cloned " somehow or another so everone needs to get off the "zomg they cloned wow" nutz...its an utterly stupid comment to begin with       "clone"    not every game should have a wow standerd  there were many before wow and there will be many after it and they ALL have some of the same mechanics

If enough people call you a duck, you're a duck.

If enough people call rift a clone, it's a clone. Unless thousands of people all share the exact same biased opinion, which I highly doubt. If this game was actually good, you would hear nothing but praise about it like GW2. The simple fact that so many people yell "wow clone" may be the fact it's a wow clone.

  • Entropy14Entropy14 Member UncommonPosts: 675

Maybe people would stop calling things clones if a company got some balls and took a slightly different path ??

But even tho i dont find Rift to be to overly cloned , it sadly still has the same feel, and pretty boring combat.

But reason is in the last 6 years theres been so many games that look the same, and so many have failed , been outright boring, and a waste of our time and money, so now we are all very skeptical.

Since the majority of the beta reviews are positive and its generally considered a well polished and good game, so then it is? Thanks i can move along because the people screaming "wow clone" are the minority.

I should add I really didn't mean for this to be just between Rift and WoW, but all games in general.  It's just that it has really been frequent talk since Rift came on the scene.  And again, I'm not saying Rift isn't a "WoW clone".  I'm just saying we're at the point where we shouldn't have to discuss a game's merits based on how similar it is to another game.

Yeah, this would have been better in the General forums (pub).

Only thing that goes on here are Fanboy and Hater rift topics that are meaningless.

It's never going to happen o.p. It's no good apealing to peoples rational sides, they don't  have one and especialy around here where the Blizzard  behemoth is concerned. As a positive note though for all the hundreds of blanket "Clone" threads that start up around here before every major release, every once in a while you get one that actualy ends up fostering a good discusion.  Take all the others with a pinch of salt and don't let them bother you is my advice.:)

Who says that just because a game is "like WoW" A.K.A "WoW clone" that it is a bad or unpolished game? I liked WoW for 6 years. I'm bored and want something new. If you like it thats great. A lot of us are looking for something fresh.

I respect your statement, it's not a fanboy stance defending RIFT to not be a clone, you are saying "yep, a lot of things in this game are similar and I like those things."

I think if more people were objective about it like that it wouldn't be talked about so much.  The problem is too many people go fanboy on the community saying how RIFT is nothing like other games, etc etc, so it breeds extra discussion.

Yes to people like me it is a negative. The fact of the matter is it does have that "WoW" feeling to it and thats why I will not be playing after release. How ever a lot of people are enjoying it. It's going to do well and it is very polished. The game plays like it has been post-launch for over a year now and it's still in beta and has plenty of content.

To be honest, when it's justified to say it's a clone of something I think it should be said. Not because it's a bad thing in everyone's opinion but because it's the truth and it is sadly most informative thing to say in just few words. I wouldnt call Rift a clone, but similar to WoW. Then again there's games that are clones, like Runes of Magic, and I just watched a video of Forsaken World and honestly I cant say what is the difference. The mechanics are same, spells are pretty much the same and same looking, characters, environment and the things you can/cant do.

There's people like me who has played some games for a long time, and I didnt quit the game because it's a bad game, I just got bored of the look and feel of the said game, and I dont want to end up playing another one that makes me feel like I am playing the one I quit.

I like mechanics like: Create character, select class, target foe, select ability, etc etc. But everything about a game that works like that dont have to be like every other game with that mechanic. I mean static world, grindy quests, similar looks, spells that have different name, effect and to some extent purpose but still are just direct damage/dot/buff/etc not a single spell that is actually fresh and so on. If it's justified I want them to be called clones because I dont want to end up spending money on something which I am bored of that has only different skin.

Saying clone is fine, if it's justified, there's just too many trolls out there who use that word too loosely.

Edit: "I wouldnt call Rift a clone, but similar to WoW." - Actually I'm not sure about this. The more I think about it, most I've heard and seen is it's like WoW with a different twist to class structure, more "dynamic" feel because of the rifts and some other not-so-big differences. The bottom line is, if it feels like playing WoW with a different twist I'd propably drop it into the clone department. Not in a negative sense but in a "it's too similar to something I'm already bored of". It's totally fine and a good thing for those who want a game that is similar to WoW but fresh. Just dont go around "defending" it being not a clone if I feel like playing WoW with a different skin from the beginning.

As long as WoW is the "standard" for MMORPGs you are going to have clone talk. Once enough MMORPGs come out that break free from this standardized WoW format then and only then can you expect people to speak less of clones Will that ever happen?I wonder

Rift isn't a clone of WoW... Rift is WoW's cousin.

The reason these stupid arguments about is rift a clone or not keep happening is because both sides are so F**KING polarized on the issue that they are refusing to see their opponents points...

The "Rift is a clone" crowd notices that there are similar mechanics, gameplay, and UI's in both Rift and WoW (or some other MMO). So they shout clone!!!

The "Rift Fanboys" see that there are unique things to Rift that make it different and fun from WoW (or some other MMO): Rifts, the Soul Tree, Graphics.  They think Rift is something new and exciting because of these mechanics so they Shout back, Unique!!!

BOTH OF THE GROUPS ARE RIGHT!!!! Stop with the them and us thinking and maybe, just maybe you can all find a common ground.....

Rift is similar to WoW (or some other MMO) because they are trying to be successful... IF anything the people shouting Rift is a clone should be proud that they have a game that has elements of a very successful mmo within it.

Rift also isn't entirely unique.... The fanboy's keep repeating themselves in saying that it's not the same, it's not the same, but once a point is made about something that is similar to Rift they start saying No it isn't <insert insult>.

So instead of arguing for all of time Why don't we just agree that there are recognizable aspects of Rift AND Unique aspects of Rift, and then get on with our lives!
