Guild Wars is not an MMORPG

GabsGabs Member Posts: 92

From the official website:

Is Guild Wars an MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game)?

Guild Wars has some similarities to existing MMORPGs, but it also has some key differences. Like existing MMOs, Guild Wars is played entirely online in a secure hosted environment. Thousands of players inhabit the same virtual world. Players can meet new friends in gathering places like towns and outposts where they form parties and go questing with them. Unlike many MMOs, when players form a party and embark upon a quest in Guild Wars, they get their own private copy of the area where the quest takes place. This design eliminates some of the frustrating gameplay elements commonly associated with MMOs, such as spawn camping, kill stealing, and lines to complete a quest.
Guild Wars takes place in a large virtual world made up of many different zones, and players can walk from one end of the world to the other. In Guild Wars much of the tedium of traveling through the world has been eliminated. Players can instantly return to any safe area (town or outpost) that they have previously visited just by clicking on it in the world overview map.

Rather than labeling Guild Wars an MMORPG, we prefer to call it a CORPG (Competitive Online Role-Playing Game). Guild Wars was designed from the ground up to create the best possible competitive role-playing experience. Success in Guild Wars is always the result of player skill, not time spent playing or the size of one's guild. As characters progress, they acquire a diverse set of skills and items, enabling them to use new strategies in combat. Players can do battle in open arenas or compete in guild-vs-guild warfare or the international tournament. Engaging in combat is always the player's choice, however; there is no player-killing in cooperative areas of the world.

Finally, unlike existing MMOs, all characters in Guild Wars inhabit the same virtual world -- they are not divided onto different servers or shards -- so players can always team up with or compete against any other player in the world.

Why is it on the game list?

No it's not a MMORPG but it appeals to the fans of this genre, and plays very similar. No reason not to have it here.

Who the hell cares? Stop complaining. It has a server and a lot of people play on it. You can meet up with your friend from Texas in it. Go play a game, go outside, or stop wasting your life worrying about this small detail. If you proved that it was not an MMORPG would you feel better or feel like you accomplished something? This has been done sooo many times now.

Then why aren't there a whole lot of other games on here that aren't MMORPGs?

Well actually there is a problem with it being on there. It bastardizes the genre. Imagine if they put CS, or Warcraft 3 on the game list. People wouldn't think MMORPGs are any more in depth than other games, or mistake the genre for something else, preventing genuine MMORPG developers being able to call their in depth game an "MMORPG".

Gabs you do realize there have been about 100 million other pointless posts about this? I am assuming you dont since you decided to make a new one. Next time take a look throug the other ones so we dont have read this crap over and over.

It is a CORPG and isn't for everyone but it will please most people. The PvP is fun and non repetitive. It requires good tactics instead of good equipment. The community is great for the most part. Maybe these are the reasons why this game is on the top list on this site..image

Well for starters Warcraft 3 is a real time strategy game and CS is a first person shooter but then again thats stating the obvios. If you compare the fact that Guild Wars is far closer to a mmorpg than other multiplayer rpg's such as Neverwinter nights and diablo 2 its quite obvious that it is close enough there fore it qualifies. But tell me one thing. What good is 1 person like you bitching on a board with alot of members who frankly dont care gonna do? Nothing. If you want a place to shit stir why dont you find a far less serious site like nothingland its full of idiots who like insulting each other and whine on about crap.

Ok. This same topic keeps coming up over and over. Guild Wars is classified as an MMORPG because it takes place online in a massive online universe, with many people, and it's a RPG. Seems to me like most of the people who post these topics are upset because they want WoW or whatever other MMORPG they're playing to shine.

Let's just drop the issue. They'll probably begin establishing more specific genre's for MMO's as the era of MMO's grows! image

exactly, as more mmos come up will see huge types of design differences. Who wants to be a mmorpg player if they are all going to be like everquest daoc etc over and over again for the next 20 years =/

Not to mention that I'm sure arena.net don't particularly want it to be called a MMORPG, it has too many negative connotations for a lot of gamers. One of the first questions asked by people interested in GW is 'what is the monthly fee', 'do you have to grind all the time', 'is it multiple servers' etc. But of course most people here thinks MMORPG's are the best things ever that every game wants to be :) Let it rest, the debate is pretty pointless.

    ---sig---

PvE in general is pretty lame, if you think long and hard about it. You are spending your time beating a severely gimped AI that would lose to a well trained monkey. Best not to think too long and hard why you are wasting time playing games in general actually...

Actually I don't currently play any MMORPGs. The genre has failed me, partly due to elements of games just like Guild Wars being embraced and stamped as "MMORPGs". WoW borders on not being an MMORPG also in my opinion. In fact niether Guild Wars nor WoW allow any actual "role playing" beyond pretending to be something. They are merely huge static deathmatch arenas linked to smaller arenas, just like a HL server browser connecting to servers.

And I did a search for "Guild Wars" on the first page of the forum, that is sufficient, but the fact remains that it is still on the list.

For what it's worth, I agree. This isn't an MMORPG.

If this were MMO.com, maybe it would belong.

I'd rather ignore these small details, as they're too small to notice for me =) According to me, it's MMORPG, it has merely its own differences and keys. Can you meet up people and go playing together? Yes! Can you role play with your guildmates if you want to? Yes! Who cares it doesn't has more than one servers or shards or it's not a time spent playing based MMO, or it doesn't have camping areas as the quests have their own private areas? LOL These are too small details, it should be on the game list, that's all

How can you even compare this to counter strike, have you even played Guildwars ?
You do know there are 2 modes pvp and roleplaying ?

When your role-playing arnt you not just "pretending" to be that chracter?

Or are you a real life necromancer.

Dont waste our time with idiotic posts please.

    M - Massive
Its not really that massive, its more of a team scale game.

    Strike one.

    M - Multi-Player
    Give you that one.

    O - Online

Give you that too, but then so are a lot of games that aren't MMORPGs.

RP - Roleplaying is one word, or hyphenated.

You take on the part of a customisable character, but do you roleplay or are you just the sum of your stats? In the context of guildwars you are no more roleplaying than you are if you choose Guile over Chun-Li.
Contrary to popular belief, roleplay does not mean class/levels/experience

    G - game, yep.

    So, its an *MO**G

    A Mog :) Or a non-pedigree cat.

Ah come on now, apart from the Mog bit (which actually, come to think of it is a good description, its an obscure mating of several different game forms) that was entirely relevent.

I agree with Gab. They might as well change the website name and throw the Diablo series on the game list as well. Im ok with one non-mmorpg being on the list but whats it going to be like if there are 10 non-mmorpgs on that list. It will be confusing. Did the company pay mmorpg.com money to put it up there?

The so called MMORPG genre is really still in its enfancy stage, or more like in its toddler stage by now.

So, really MMORPG is still a generalized name for a game that is basically Developer/Publisher hosted servers. That is why it is listed and I am sure Phantasy Star online will be also. It is similar with the login and main servers run by the devs and the instances run by the better letency of one of the group members.

If you also look at DDO, it will be much similar, but even on a smaller scale. Still dev ran servers!

So, to really see MMORPG isn't really a genre at all, but a type of large game scale (typically larger than what your average player can host) that can be part of any genre like RPG, RTS, FPS and etc. As the large scale developer hosted gaming community grows it will keep transforming into just a new way for all of us to play our favorite genre, which each one can even break down into different timelines. Medieval, Early American, Western Days, Common, Futuristic and even Sci-Fi to even more twisted as to blend or invert any of the above.

Still, no matter if it is free, monthly charges, small scale player base, MASSIVE player base or any genre or setting you can think of...No matter what since this so called "MMORPG" titled way of playing is still young and polymorphing constantly like a druid on drugs, as long as the developer, publisher, investor or anyone that has a lisense to say you can't run a server and only have a client end software then in my opinion, the game is and will remain a MMORPG until it grows enough to have it's own library and the need to start organizing it under more than simply MMORPG.

If you have been in the community of the MMO's long you will know that MMORPG is not truly no longer MASSIVE, nor Role Playing... Infact Turbine and some other developers are already starting to call it MOG. However I know a lot can argue about that generalization and say any game played on the net can be considered a MOG.

But until that changes to me and I am sure most out there will agree that MMORPG truly only means that the siad title is a Dev/Pub Hosted game, free or pay...So, this topic only shows the ignorance of the original poster. Remember this gaming, even being around for such a while hasn't really got a real name yet. Not only that it really isnt a genre, since most genres can use it as well. but more as a way of playing. To finish my point. NwN could have been listed here but since it is player hosted and not hosted by Bioware, it fails to make it on the list.
