They use Gamebryo which is the same as WAR, Oblivion and Fallout use, I dont know what version they used tho, which makes a hugeee difference, I have experience with both 2.5 and Lightspeed and there is a world of difference away, if they used Lightspeed scene streaming is much better which may explain the differences.
Game engine in Rift works just fine. Graphics are nice, and design is just beautiful. Load times are good, and without debugger running in the background it will work even better. Game still looks better than Aion, though that game uses heavly modified Crytek engine. Graphics can't compare with AoC, but many of us remember, how AoC engine "worked" at the beginning, and funcom is still having problems with it.
Sure it's not "next gen" but i think MMO's should be made so a lot of people can play it, without buying new computer.
Regardless of "modification", the game engine, Gamebryo is fairly bad if you consider the alternatives. It wont have age of conan graphics, it wont have that weighted kind of feel in which you feel your character and the world around you actually has some mass rather than a floaty kind of walk. It will feature many of the same problems that Gamebryo is known for and also hit the same limitations the game engine sets. Its a mmorpg and all art assets, normal mapping, specular mapping... everything will be even below the highest achievable point that Gamebryo can handle.
It really was a poor choice on Trion's part to go with Gamebryo. If the needed a bit of extra time and money to get everyone learning a better engine, they should have taken it. MMORPGS are investments, they are risks, do it right the first time and you will be better off otherwise you might just end up flushing your investment down the toilet.
While I may be giving the engine a harder time than it deserves... for a truly next gen game, a different engine should have been used.
I think the engine looks fine to be honest. Heres the issue you need an engine that can handle somewhat high graphical requirements plus allow you to have 100 + chars in the same area without causing lag to mid range/high end systems and from previous games that used this engine this should work great for that. Unlike games like Aion that used the FarCry engine i believe this game will not lag with 100-200 people in the same area if you have a nice PC Aion will no matter what.
Ok lets see now. You are trying to state multiple arguements that speaks for GameBryo, most are wrong.
First of all Aion is using a modified CryENGINE not FarCry Engine, it's used in the game FarCry tho. And if you think Aion was laggy you will be shocked to see how GameBryo handles same amount of players in same small area.
Secondly, GameBryo lags you to death with 100 people on the same area fighting, have not ever tried Warhammer Online and their "War is Everywhere, Sieges"? Even the servers was lagging so bad that once the siege was over it sometimes took 2 hours or more before the servers caught up and reported the siege as done. All systems will lag, even if you would happen to get your hands on a quantumcomputer you will lag due to limits in the GameBryo engine.
Thirdly, GameBryo is using way too much physics to be used in any MMO, it's an unwritten rule amongst all smart MMO-Developers to not use too much physics in a MMO-game. Physics are for singleplayer games, simplicity are for MMO's.
So to be honest, you have no idea of how bad the GameBryo truly is, but since you obviously already decided to buy this game it's going to be your loss when you discover the zillion flaws of the engine.

GameBryo lags you to death in Warhammer. Rift is not Warhammer. I personaly attended events in Rift that included over 50 players and ****loads of mobs and it didn't lag. And that is with debugger running in the background.

People just got to talk trash. This game is good and the engine has not lagged me out at all in pretty large fights. Some people will always talk negatively. Just the way it is.
These are the same people who think Rifts and PQs from war are the same.
Kings and Sons of God Travel on their way from here Calming restless mobs Easing all of their, all of their fear Strange times are here.

But to make a popular MMO today thats not enough, WAR, Oblivion and Fallout doesnt feel smooth at all even when you move your character around.
And for those who say it's working fine in the beta, I really find it hard to believe, but then again, there is not enough load on the servers or clients in a closed beta, and they probably havent turned on all the physics yet.
And to claim that it looks better than Aion is bogus. It's two completly different graphics styles and cant be compared in that way.

Did you even play Rift beta? Not enough load on the servers? Whole point of open betas is to stress test servers. All is turned on, game works beautifly, but you have to play it, to see it.

No actually you are pretty wrong here, I dont know where you get your information from, either your pretty confused about what lag is and your definition is quite vague, if you are talking about graphical lag, then it also boils down to your pc, Gamebryo is not the most optimized engine out there but it can run quite smoothly on decent hardware.
If you the other hand you are talking about lag ( network latency ) then again your concept and your knowledge are wrong as Gamebryo while provides basic support for network it is an open API which the delevoper needs to optimize for their needs, data packaging and exchanging is all down to developers.
If the developer fails to optimize it for the purposed use then it will lag, and the same can happen on ANY engine including Unreal and CryEngine it is that simple, NONE of these engines with the exception of the ATLAS extention for Unreal come MMO ready they have basic small scale FPS inbuilt network support, anything above that comes down to the developer to tweak and optimize and has nothing to do with the engine.
Not only that but the biggest flaw is calling Gamebryo a game engine which is not, if you ever get hold of gamebryo documentation or if you had a chance to ever work with it, gamebryo is actually a cross platform rendering engine not a full on game engine like Unreal it relies heavily on integration with middleware for almost everything other than rendering.
So you can say that Trion wont be able to use Gamebryo effectively but your knowledge of this subject is very limited to say the least.
I'm not here to bash Rift, but after playing other games using same game engine I'm not really interested in buying it, for obvious reasons.
Prove me wrong and I'll change my mind about the game, otherwhise it's a No-Buy for me.
You can get beta access almost anywhere. I did play Fallout, Oblivion and Warhammer for that matter, and i know which problems those game graphicly had. But rift is not anything like those games. Sure when you look at style it does look a bit like Warhammer. But it looks so much better i can't realy describe. And engine works perfectly.

I know enough to say that this game we are talking about here will have graphics lag no matter what card or how many cards you are using during massive pvp. Anything else is a bigger miracle than earth being born around 4 billion years ago. And honestly I think most people already know how they can avoid network latency so that is really not needed to go into. But if you want, you can for instance get killernic's network card it's a good start, then you can use smoothping to further improve your pingtimes. But in the case of my experience with GameBryo it's graphics lag even when it shows 100FPS it still stutters and whatnot.
And I have enough on GameBryo to understand how it works, why dont you have a try at the titles created using GameBryo, they all have longer loading times than games created with CryEngine. You can find the titles using GameBryo here: http://www.gamebryo.com/en/Clients--Titles/
This is my first post, so I know people will ignore it but i'll post anyways.
The developers of Rift have done a GREAT job with the Gamebryo engine compared to WAR and other games using it. Yes it feels/looks exactly like you're playing Warhammer, but with controls/a UI that is tight and responsive like WoW. I only was able to play it on my laptop so I had to lower the settings but there were some major battles with tons of players/mobs around and it ran fine.
Plus, during some of the most intense parts of the beta(won't leak any info) I was getting a ping of 60ms, I don't think I ever saw it over 100ms with my 10mb/s wireless connection(Most mmo's I get anywhere from 120-170). Obviously they're doing something right with this engine and their servers.
Now that being said, the game is the same old generic MMO, just extremely polished.

apparently you havent tried the earthrise beta, its lags from hell in debug mode. MHS have said its because of the debug mode that many of the issues are there.
I should say 99% of MMOs. The only ones that offered anything different in the last couple years have been
DFO, MO, Fallen Earth, APB Global Agenda (pretty good actually), Perpeturam, and other sandbox games being developed by really small companies (Xysom, Dawntide, etc)
How anyone could say global agenda is a good game is beyond me. I played it and it seemed extremely confined and co-op ... Same enemies over and over again. it isn't even a true MMO. Well, if those are the kind of games that hold your interest.
Clearly you have something against rift. Fallen earth was a snooze fest might I add. Seems like all the games you like are all the games that put me to sleep, but meh w/e.. To each their own.
From all the homework i did,i was still unable to get beyond the usual bla bla hype,so i couldn't get any real stats behind this engine. The developer of the engine is long gone[closed doors]but i guessa typical money bags operation, picked up the rights to it's properties,i assume just so they can aid the debt of the dev and cash in on any future or owed licensing fees.I do not beleive their was any option to include royalties in the licensing, bascially meaning, your game fails ,you owe less.
Here is what i do know,it on paper anyhow was trying to mimmick what Square Enix did with their game engine, try to ease the developement for a multi platform gaming engine. This engine was capable of pretty much everything,dx11,Phys x,had several joint ventures with other software developers, much the same as what leading edge devs do for example Unreal Tech engine.Gamebryo was also trying to accomodate an engine that made it easy to add new ideas on the fly.
So with everything i gathered up,this engine was more than capable of being a very good engine. So i can only conclude that anything limiting was becuase of the lack of developers effort, lack of know how and or the most obvious, they tried to be a bit aggressive as was Vanguard, but it is impossible to make a high end game on a DX9c Api.
Then we need look no further than the unsurmountable problems Square has had trying to utilize that [multi platform ability]they designed their game engine to do.SO maybe all the developers found out , that the engine was instead of being more versatile, came with the added luggage of being more limiting.
So bottom line fact is this,Gamebryo had a lot of developers, some quite high on the food chain [Vivendi/Blizzard/THQ] ect ect.All of a sudden these guys all started to pull out and left Gamebryo with no choice but to lay off half the work force instantly, then a few months later, completely shut down.So one NEEDS to ask ....WHY?? Why all of a sudden does it go from stardom to failure status literally over night?I have my take on it,the engine as in the case of Square Enix's new engine, was all "Hype/talk" and looked good on paper" but in reality, the develoeprs were not happy with it,so they all moved on elsewhere.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Just so you know, your ping ONLY means you live clsoe and or have a fast backbone to the servers,it has nothing to do with TRION or the game.Since you mentioned pings,i can tell you that i play FFXI a game with distant servers and high pings and for a game usually running me around 300 but leaps to 1200 ping at times, plays VERY responsive and over all ,very good, most games at 300+ will crawl.
Now TRION would deserve some credit ,IF they had servers so well distributed that everyone could enjoy great pings, but that is never going to happen.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Before emergent closed doors they actually started doing Lightspeed which was pretty much their take on UDK, Unity style of development heavily based on their own development tools, they developed something called workbench which allowed for a lot of content to be put in without having to code it.
Unfortunately things like what I mentioned UDK and Unity really grabbed those markets quickly, not only that but Lightspeed was really in its infancy and I am not sure it even got out of testing, it was a good idea but still very far from a finished product and no way they would have funds to keep it going and compete with a giant like Unreal.
The Gamebryo engine is the reason me and about 20 guildies will not be buying RIFT! The engine is shit and the game will be, because of the poor choice of engine usage... good luck to Trion non the less 5 betas and alpha is enough.
All I know is that both Aion and Rift have the same fps on my machine. Both games are on ultra/max settings. Rift environment looks better and the world is more fleshed out. Too bad they don't share the same clothes fashion, hehe.
I don't see another game looking and handling better any time soon. Only thing that'll probably surpass it will be Tera, I have low hopes for SW:TOR and GW2 looks about the same (with no idea how instanced it'll be).
The Gamebryo engine is the reason me and about 20 guildies will not be buying RIFT! The engine is shit and the game will be, because of the poor choice of engine usage... good luck to Trion non the less 5 betas and alpha is enough.
Did you play the beta? I'm guessing the answer is probably no...poor choice on your part mate. Give it a try, I bet you'll feel different.

Im with you on this no complaints, and I really do feel the same way about TOR sadly, the apple has fallen far from the tree as they say, I had for many years envisioned a great SW MMO but sadly this has fallen at least for now short of my expectations of what it could have been and while it seems like it will provide a great leveling experience with lots of detail and voice acting it falls short on the spirit of SW itself.

Kings and Sons of God
Travel on their way from here
Calming restless mobs
Easing all of their, all of their fear
Strange times are here.
Well so far everything looks good to me. Maybe the sky will fall a month in. Who knows.
But for a FACT it runs good for me plus it is pretty fun and thats all I care about.

50 people with debugging tools, like the debugging tools would make you lag lol, that would only happen if you run the game on a singlecore CPU. ;p
Did you even play Rift beta? Not enough load on the servers? Whole point of open betas is to stress test servers. All is turned on, game works beautifly, but you have to play it, to see it.
I'm not here to bash Rift, but after playing other games using same game engine I'm not really interested in buying it, for obvious reasons.
Prove me wrong and I'll change my mind about the game, otherwhise it's a No-Buy for me.
Warhammer runs like shit.
They may share some version of the engine but rift runs freaking flawless compared to WAR.
MY PC still stutters while playing WAR and yet i can play Rift on the same setting and have no issues.
Playing: Rift, LotRO
Waiting on: GW2, BP
Uh. Yes. Debugging tools increases the workload no matter what. And it's noticeable, especially with any logging tools on.
"When it comes to GW2 any game is fair game"
