I only tried Rift, but Tera looks much better.  I'm scared to play it because I'm worried it will be a grindfest.

From watching the long open beta PvP duel vid from Tera, i gotta say i don't care if it's grindy or not, the combat is out of this world. I could kill mobs for weeks non-stop with combat and animations like that and the graphics look proper next level too.

I only managed to play Rift half an hour, got a quick feel for it, just deciding whether i should devote time to something i've done before.

In next beta, play to at least 15 or so, get all your souls and an extra role and see if it's different enough for you.  I get that it's a lot of the same you're used to, but the soul system + rifts/invasions make for a really different feel.  I've never had so much fun with the MMO aspect of an MMO as I did in this last beta.

I'll be getting rift at launch and playing for however long I have fun playing.  Tera looks awesome too and I'm looking forward to trying it out.  They're both different enough that I'd pay to play both if they were both fun.

i am going for RIFT  dont egt me wrong TERA looks great aswell but to asian for my taste :) but he atleast with all those mmo's out there we can all pick what we like :)

  • DrunkWolfDrunkWolf Member RarePosts: 1,701

My point of view is mostly on pvp.

The 2 faction system has been beat to death and im tired of it. I tried Rift beta and it just wasnt for me.

Im holding out hope Tera has a open world FFA server. If it does then i will play Tera for along time.

I agree, I checked out some videos and while Tera has some very nice graphics, the anime look really pushes me away. I hope both do well.

I'm going to stick with Rift for the Western audience and Tera for the Eastern audience.

They both have very specific art and lore directions. Rift looks Western. It has a lore and art style that can be seen in WoW, Warhammer, AoC, and even Dragon Age.

Tera looks Eastern and has an asian art and lore direction. It looks a lot like Lineage and even Aion.

For myself, I'm going to pick Rift. It's just more my cup of tea and I've thoroughly enjoyed every minute I've been playing.

Between those two I think I'm definitely going to say TERA. Robust combat, better graphics and landscapes, strategy and tactics involved, endgame competitive PvP and PvE that doesn't promote zergs, unique races...easy choice for me on that one.

I'm going to go with Tera.  For me, Rift feels like an unrefined WoW.  Whereas Tera will bring something new to the table; or so I hope.

For those of you worry about grinding in Tera, Here is my 2 cents from Korean Open beta.

WIthout understanding a word in korean, I was able to lvl up to 25 without grind a single mob that is not quest related, (1-25 about 30 - 40 hr of questing). Leveling is about 2-3 x faster than wow, but around the same speed compare with Rift.

  • skoupidiskoupidi Member UncommonPosts: 244

I feel pity for the people claiming that tera is just an asian grinder.

Anyway i played both game betas and the choise is pretty easy and simple : Tera all the way image

Everyone says Tera has great graphics. Really? The art style feels unbalanced to me. Like using super high resolution textures in Minecraft. It doesn't look right.

The characters and monsters have very high polygon count and high resolution textures. But the sky is low res, the terrain is almost always very flat, and there is almost no clutter on the ground (grass, rocks, logs, etc). And then they add the oversaturated colors. The colors are even more saturated and cartoony then SWTOR. It looks like anime for teenage girls. Very strange and hard to describe.

Rift's graphics feel more balanced all around. If an MMO scene was a movie set, Rift seems complete. It feels believable. The terrain is hilly, rough, jagged and uneven, it's bump mapped, there's rocks, grass, clutter. The trees are so thick they block the sky. There's shadows everywhere. It looks realistic.

SWTOR also does a better job of making the game world look realistic than Tera. Good graphics are not just high polygon character models, armor, and mobs.

I probably won't play either, but I predict RIFT will have more subs.  Or maybe TERA.

Everything you describe mostly about the artstyle is a matter of personal preferance.but really i have never seen a sky more beatifull than Tera's. The clouds are actually moving and hiding the sun and so on.Not to mention that everything is a lot more detailed than rift.

Now about the "clutter".Don't know what you mean but there is higher grass that actually moves in the direction of the wind when it blows or even leaves dropping from trees flying arround. But i guess you have just seen a few screenshots.

If you don't like little girls fighting big giants then its a completely different thing, but really there is no comparison on the graphics quality between rift and tera.

Edit: Swtor is still far away, again you cant compare pictures or youtube videos to released or almost released games.

What have you been smoking? and can I have some!!

Gamebryo engine just does not stack up to UE3 period, and throwing in SWTOR is laughable at best.  Tor will crush any game when it comes to story delivery but it's art style has been so hotly debated due to its cartoonish looks.  Oo

Rift but TERA looks like it could be fun, it will only succeed if theres some depth to it and it's not a grindfest. Either way, I'm going to predict Rift will do pretty well and maintain itself for a long time to come.

TERA is better than Rift in every way imaginable.

  • nomssnomss Member UncommonPosts: 1,468

I like Tera's atmosphere; all greenry you know. Rift has very dark aura. I have not played Tera, but IMO, from the Tera's screenshots, I feel Tera's world is more beautiful than (then?) Rift's.

Oh, and which of the "then, than" would I use in above sentence?

The issues with Tera's graphics are just what I explained. The terrain is almost always flat, there is no bump mapping on the textures to make it look 3-dimensional. And they only use little bits of 3d grass. I've seen hundreds of screenshots and dozens of gameplay videos. I want to like Tera, character models and combat looks really fun. But I can't get over the flatness and emptiness of the terrain.

If you've seen WoW on max graphics setting, you can find massive amounts of grass, rocks, logs, plants, boxes, crates, barrels, leaves, boulders, tree stumps, etc. That is clutter. It makes the environment look real, lived in, and believable, instead sterile, artificial, and computer generated.

Even Warhammer that came out a few years ago had more hills, rocks, valleys, and uneveness to the terrain. More ground "clutter", more variety in the sky.

I prefer graphics that look like the real world was literally translated somehow into 3d art. But no place in the world looks like Tera, except a golf course. In Los Angeles or Orlando. During the summer. It really really looks artificial. Combined with the really oversaturated colors (more than SWTOR). Again, it looks cartoonish. Even with the high polygon characters. I know they are going for a certain look, more eastern anime style and easter rpg level design. But I wish they would try a little more wester rpg style and level design.

The correct word would be "than". Than is used in comparison. Like Rift is better than TERA. Or, I would rather play TERA than Rift.

Then is used to show a sequence of events. Such as, today I went to the store, then I ate  a sandwich. Or, If I buy Rift then I might not have money for TERA.

As to my answer for this thread, I beta tested Rift, and although I think it is a nice game, it didn't feel new enough to me. TERA interests me because of the political system I heard about.

Both games disapoint me because neither of them appear to have player housing, which is almost a must for me.
