Am I the only one who thinks this game is not that great?

Same here, I didn't think I was going to really like it. I never bothered signing up for any of the beta events thinking it was going to be primarily all PvP and a guild was required to do anything in game. And no, I actually didn't read much about it before it was released either. A couple days after it was released, I read some reviews, checked out the website and found myself really interested in the game. Call it an impulsive purchase, I went online to the NCSoft website, purchased a key, downloaded the game and was playing it later that night.

I had not been following the game, so I really had no expectations going into the game. Yes, I read a few reviews, checked out the website, but that was pretty much the extent of it. I have to admit that the PvE is more than I expected. I didn't expect there to be much of anything, or if there was, that it was going to be the traditional treadmill of rats, snakes, and so on. There is actually a storyline in the game, quests that are more than simple "Fed-ex" and "Go Kill X" quests (there are those too). It's a fun little game that while may not be a replacement for your traditional MMORPG, is a great alternative for when just want something different.

    i really like the game.

i have not started pvp yet, i now have 2 chars who done all the missions and 2 that are lvl 15. once i get all 4 to finishe all the mission, then...hopefully a real mmorpg will come along but i dont think it will take that long.
its not a long term game i believe, unless you like to do the pvp battles over and over and over.

and also i would like to say, my main char is a monk, and he look very nice in full body tatoo's(black)

    Maybe it's just me...

It seems just the opposite to me.. my guild is filled with people that have played MMORPG's.. mostly WoW leavers, and ex-EQ players that never wanted to touch an MMORPG again.. I guess like all other fully online games it's all about who you surround yourself with. If you can't get over the character models then maybe GW just isn't your game. For someone like myself who enjoys combat well above any other aspect of these games, then GW is probably going to be their game.

Also, it sounds like you're just doing quests.. I agree with you they are pretty bland... they added many of those in as somewhat of an afterthought, and they still need alot of tweaking..the game is alot more fun if you just do missions and quest relevant to your char. in terms of gear and skills. Sounds lke you haven't done any missions at all. If you are trying to do every little quest then I can understand the boredom. Some people enjoy playing the game that way.. I know I couldn't. It's more like playing a solo EQ2 if you take the do every quest approach.

The character models are hideous. The Monk looks like a large baby who suffers from Down Syndrome, the Mesmer is completely flamboyant, while the Ranger can't run without looking like he has a stick up his ass. If your character isn't in a tight outfit in which several thousand other people are wearing at the same time, then he's dancing naked in front of town gates out of sheer boredom. To top it off, there's hardly any diversity as far as appearance goes.
There are a few high points such as the combat system which is intuitive. Other than this, I can't find the motivation to log on and play anymore. I usually stare at my guy as he runs around for a few minutes and then I realize I really don't feel like running around completing meaningless quests wth hardly any backstories to them at all.

I picked up this game after finding that I can no longer enjoy the CU SWG. I have been messing with different chars in GW but I find that I just cant get into it. Personally I just enjoy the sci-fi genre way more than the fantasy medieval world.

I couldnt agree more with stellus, i really can't get into this game! The level is capped at 20 and supposedly thats where the game begins... Actual Guild Wars is what its all about.... but what happens when everyone gets to lvl 20? and everyone discovers the ultimate tactic in battle? everyone will look the same and the level of skill required on a personal basis to be good at the game will drop dramatically! If the game was more customizable maybe it would be more fun... i find the missions and quest boring and a grind as you have to do them to get exp.... and im more of an action finnatic. I've been playing for roughly a week and am aproaching lvl 20 ( i know hardcore gamers that did it in 2 days and couldnt see the point in carring on! ) surely its all going to end up with everyone the same... guild wars with exactly the same characters on either team with wins depending on your connection speeds as the tactis become nature!

If you're seeing a lot of the exact same characters on both teams, it is probably due to the premades.  If you play in the Hall of Heroes for a while or play several top 10 teams, you'll find the strategies, tactics, and characters to be very, very diverse.

You flame my english skills while you have problems spelling your own words; you double posts; you can not count; and you're enjoying to discuss with a 6 year old kid....

May I ask if you're a fan of Michael Jackson, and if "comback" is a filthy ghetto word or something you say only in your family?

Well, a signature with "Proud to be a Guild Wars player" says it all...

Don't hate a game that you can't play because your system can't handle it,  just go upgrade your computer and come back here and enjoy the game the way it was meant to be played.

Every post you make in the Guild Wars forum just re-affirms my belief that you have NO LIFE trying to flame other posters because you can't play it.  If you actually made intelligent posts and they were some-what legible than I would respect you, but all you do as flame other people about a game that you can't play because you have a GHETTO computer.

It's not just you! I too am having trouble with this game.

This game is neither an MMO nor an RPG. Sure it has elements associated of both, but doesn't have the essence of either.

RPGs aren't about getting loot and gaining experience, though those are elements everyone associates with them. An RPG is a *Role-playing* game. It's a game where you make decisions for your charector, be they good, evil, or somewhere in between. In an RPG you can define your own role, and not follow a script. In this game you can't do that. You don't decide what type of person your charector is, the game decides that for you. You can't choose to be evil or anything that's contrary to the predefined script and linear story. You can't even advance to the higher levels unless you go along with the story. A better description for this type of game would be an adventure game with RPG elements.

As far as being an MMO goes, if this is an MMO then there are several other games which also deserve that distinction. Why is this an MMO but Diablo 2 isn't? Is it because instead of interacting in a chat box before missions you interact in a town? What I'd like to hear is a definition, not a vague description, of what an MMO truly is.

It seems to me that many of those who rave about this game like to point to the fact that the game is free of monthly costs and that the mission system is better than that of MMOs. I agree both of those points are valid, however there is nothing really unique about them. Diablo 2 doesn't have monthly fees, Dungeon Siege doesn't have monthly fees, and both of those games are similar to Guild Wars in regards to the elements they have in common with MMOs. Further, the missions while better than that of MMOs (though one wonders how the missions in MMOs could be any worse) are not any better than many single player games with multiplayer support. Same could be said of the linear story, better than MMOs but worse than most single player games.

One final point that many supporters of the game make is its superb PvP and GvG action. From what I've seen this seems to be very true and is a definite plus for the game. However this isn't an aspect of the genre that is very important to me. I do respect the fact that for some it is very important and so I must give the game credit.

Anyway, I'm not going to give up on this game yet. It'll be very interesting to see what sort of additions will be made with the coming of the expansion packs.

Instancing does make it more difficult to find and make in-game friends. For those who aren't good at that sort of thing, it can be difficult to play GW. Honestly, if you just want to chat and hang out with some friends in an online fantasy environment and don't mind paying for it, there are better games to play. However, Guild Wars is a great game. The end product is undeniably one of the best online experiences you will ever have (provided that you enjoy a bit of pvp).

i think the trouble is that people are coming to play this game, with preformed ideas about what the game 'should' be like. thus, people are gonna be disappointed.

forget the term MMO (even though NCSoft never even called it that) and forget RPG. they're just terms people like to throw around.

as much as i am a die-hard RPG fan (i miss WISH :( ) i can't deny that GW is a damn fun game, even if it does lack the depth of a game such as UO.

if you're coming into the game with pre-conceptions, chances are the game won't live up to them.

    so keep an open mind

'RPG' is actually a contradiction in terms nowadays, with so many people putting the empasis on the 'RP' bit. Guild Wars firmly puts the emphasis on the 'G', the same way that Diablo, Zelda, FF and all the other 'old school' RPG's did.

    ---sig---

PvE in general is pretty lame, if you think long and hard about it. You are spending your time beating a severely gimped AI that would lose to a well trained monkey. Best not to think too long and hard why you are wasting time playing games in general actually...

    Have you actually tried PvP?

*You gain experience in PvP just like you would in PvE.

*There is no ultimate battle tactic - there are too many skills & class & equipment combinations with too few skill-slots per character to make a single ubertactic that can't be beaten, it's simply "impossible"

*Go into the Tombs right now and you'll see every single team has a completely different tactic, with completely different class-combinations - this ain't an Online RPG where 5 skills are overpowered and the rest are pure and utter crap. Every single skill is viable.

*Go to Droknar's Forge right now and try to find someone who looks exactly like you - good luck, because chances are you won't find that person.

*This game is probaply one of the most action-packed RPG's out there, if you were an action-fanatic, you'd enjoy the missions/quests.

*It wont end up with everyone looking & playing the same way, try playing PvP and grasping the concept of tactics before proclaiming the end of the world as we know it. (which is a baseless assumption)
