Level design is a big deal in both the industry and towards us as players! I just got the free trial to Everquest to go back to Qeynos and Blackburrow (only to discover I can't...) but it made me think of Everquest and how their levels were designed.
Qeynos -- I loved this city.
Qeynos Hills - I would always bump into players in Qeynos Hills. Yet at the same time, it was big enough to give me plenty of my own room to do anything I wanted. Sometimes, I'd have to contest a spawn, or find someone taking my potential kill, as in any other MMO.
BlackBurrow- the choke points in this dungeon were brilliant, and it was DEFINITELY a fun zone! Always plenty of people, and always a TON who were at the entry of the zone.
IMO, BlackBurrow was what MADE "Train to zone!" and "GET TO THE ZONE! TOUCH THE WALL! TOUCH!!! THE!!!! WALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" so much fun.
And zoning back in to see everyone dead? Classic.
I don't know why people complained-- I loved, absolutely LOVED the Qeynos Gates newbie experience. Killing rats and beetles and the legendary Fippy was perhaps the COOLEST newbie experience I've ever had, save the Goblin Vanguard adventure questline (which was one of the first times i was ever truly immersed in a MMO since Everquest. Good job vanguard!)
And Qeynos Catacombs? *drools*
If Vanguard had PvP and better crafting (it was REALLY boring...although REALLY awesome...) I'd have played it much more. Actually... I don't even remember why I didn't play it. I LOVED it in Beta. Absolutely loved it. And first part of release. Maybe I will retry Vanguard...actually...lol... Playtesting other games is key to game design! :P Yea... that's my excuse. LOL!

Don't you just love when you starting writing and in the end you have found the conclusion on your own? I would have to agree.
Take a look in the vanguard section, if you want a little more depth into what to expect about the game. But I will say this, there are players playing, but its not exactly crowded, I think the server goes from mid to low throughout the day, and there have been little to none development the past year.
I won't be returning...
Why?
I entirely forgot... the trial of that game doesn't let you leave the island either...
I just want to play some of the better designed levels... not even for long...
