Fallen Earth: February State of the Game

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Icarus Studios Senior Game Designer Marie “Aro Sei” Croall has posted the latest Fallen Earth 'state of the game' letter that features a look back at recent accomplishments as well as a look forward to what the future holds. The PTS will be updated soon and will give players a first look at skill and mutation changes, Scavenger Bosses, a large content area on the way to Sector 4 and several economy changes.

Economic Improvements:

We've started the overall changes to the economy by addressing the availability of certain resources as well as item costs. Some recipes were excessive chip sinks, while others were unbalancing the economy by providing far too many chips for the effort expended on them. We will be bringing these more in line with their actual cost to produce.

We are also working on adjusting node drop-rates as well as refining what components are dropped from specific nodes. We started by creating more nodes specifically for geological and botanical chemicals to reduce the chance that players would gather an unwanted resource from a node.

We've also lowered the component prices overall.

I like FE but I've stopped playing it for now.  It looks like they've made some nice changes.  Removing faction requirements for mutations was a good change but now they need to add something to make loyalty to a faction mean something again.  If I wasn't so entrenched in Eve right now I'd resub for a month.

I love FE and it's nice to see them working hard on updating the game.  Looking forward to S4!

Still waiting on them to go over the animations for MOBS and NPCs. they glide to much for me or it might just be the AI they have for them. Something with these though turn me off to the game. might be lame, but still how I fieel.

Nothing about PvP? That's a shame as the lack of PvP content is the only thing stopping me from subscribing to this game.

There's PvP every night fighting over conflict towns.  The addition of faction control points makes PvP very happening at end game, and with these combat changes it's going to explode.

A year ( ? ) after the launch the AI still stands passivly while you 20 meters away in full open and walks away when you rape their family...No thanks.

Are they ever going to overhaul the combat system? Ever? I really want to give this game another shot but not until that happens. The game has massive potential but the lackluster combat is holding it back IMHO.

Yeah, The combat system is the only reason I didnt bother with this game. I could deal with the lack of character customization (seasoned city of heroes player here) and everything else lame about the game, but the combat is just so terrible and terrible looking. Its probably too late to go back and overhaul it since they build the engine from scratch and probably never planned on changing it thinking it'd be good enough.

I've been playing since release and can tell you one thing - it's devs are slowpokes.. Every promise is broken, every SOTG i read about "veeery cool things we're add to the game soon". "Soon" comes in half a year - minimum.

For example, S4 has been promised to be by the end of 2009. When did we got it? Not yet. Now ETA In 3rd quarter of 2011, and that's not gonna be entire sector, but it's first location.

    Progress Towns - last September.

Combat revamp - started in sep or nov and next couple of months game was half-broken because most of skills and items (incl. armor+equipment) became useless. Not "let's use it in presice moment", but "why the hell this skill in the game? o_O It doesn't do anything." RIfles has been nerfed, melee boosted even more, in the Blood Sports you have to be lucky as hell to meet another rifle or pistol guy. Up to now game is in this state, no changes has been made.

And moderators in the forum delete every post which they don't like.

Where'd you get Q3 from user750? Q2 is the stated timeframe for Alpha County (directly behind the wall -S4), and the Feb patch has the new Ruination area in it.

Yeah, they're slow, they're a very small team. It''s not like they're sitting around twiddling their thumbs, they get stuff done.

This combat revamp has been going on a long time, after this pass hits live they're still going to be tweaking the item system (gear/consumables)....I'll have quite the little collection of respec injectors to play around with on all my characters.

After that, I hope they leave combat alone for a considerable amount of time.

Fallen Earth is one of the best games I have had the pleasure of seeing in awhile... However I wont play it since it suffers from some serious design flaws that just keep me away, mainly how factions and pvp mechanics work. If they actually addressed those two areas, give it some DAOC like pvp mechanics, they would have a much more successful product, as of right now they will keep a small player base and keep those would be subscribers away.

Feb patch will bring Ruination area, yeah. That's what, like 10-15 new quests? For 50 lvl, who won't receive exp? o_O Why for?

You know, sometimes it looks exactly like you said about twiddling their thumbs. They get stuff done, then re-do it, and then again, and again... Instead of doing something new they ruining what was already there and working(!) in sake of ... "hey, let's try THIS! ooooh, it's sux potatoes, sorry... let's keep it tho." Dev team DO NOT care about players opinion, which you can see from official forum.

Small or big team - it doesn't matter in a long run. By now (1,4 year) they could polished all the content they got so far. Because in 1,4 year there wasn't much new content. )) What we got, Blood Sports? It has like 4 little maps, one for each game type. Deadfall and lvl 50? Yep, that was cool... in first couple months. It's been released 7th of May 2010, and since then there was NO content patches, which contained a new location or territory.

The only thing that grows up on a monthly basis - is Item Shop. It's rapidly growing by the effort of small team of devs... who's too busy with Item Store to develop the game, i guess.
