I finally found whats wrong with Rift

Rift is a good game.

Great graphics , great lore , good quests , lots of class combinations , company that listens , decent pvp , dynamic events and lots of variety.

But all along playing I have constant feeling of something annoying -

Eiter i feel that the game is not living its full story potential , the world is not immersive.

Or i feel annoyed with mobs being cramed every 20 feet all over the map.

And sometimes I feel "Oh , not another invasion"

All this is making me level as a chore, and not as enjoyment as i would get in some good parts of LOTRO or WOW

So yesterday i finally understood -

WORLD SIZE !!!!

So simple!

I went to a area in Stonefield. That was (for story reasons) vast and empty of mobs. I finally felt i can BREATHE.

I enjoyed the lore of quests there as i went riding my mount to another encounter.

What Rift needs are bigger areas :)

Less density of mobs all over. But more mobs at quest spots.

And why not ?

They allready have technology to make seamless world. So its being a bit bigger wont hurt.

It will only make it more appealing.

Invasions will be better.

And only drawback will be players having to ride their mount 30 seconds longer , from time to time.

I know its to late now for this change.

But it would make Rift from good game to great :)

    That explains a lot.

Rift actually has smallest world of all mentioned MMOrpgs.

More than half smaller than LOTRO for example.

    I wonder Why ?

They obviously have technology to make big world with no instancing. So why did they chose to make it so constrained....

    Real shame ...

I'm sure more zones wil open and give you even more space. but i already find it so big xD as they said it wil be possible to enter rifts at some point. since there are 8 rift planes. that opens up a lot of space and dimensions ^^

They didnt have an endless budget and endles time you know. give them some credit for what they did with a totaly new company. Expansions wil fix more space. but downside is. Who needs the space. Once its explored everybody just sits in main city's. or thats how it is in wacraft.

What i find that does make the rift world wayy bigger.. almost any hill is explorable. there are no glass wals between zones. No hills that really block your exploring progress. almost all are conquerable.

"r i feel annoyed with mobs being cramed every 20 feet all over the map."

If you reading this are playing then you know people are already say.. WAY to many of them.. I mean its getting boring already.. I found myself (just speaking for ME) avoiding some.. Man when you have 15+ in a small area .. kills the fun real fast..

But they may just be doing this for beta so after launch can we really see..

I think if rift had a bigger area it would be good, but there is always room, it's an up and coming game. i figure it'll do alright.

Some good points. One point of yours that I especially have a problem in a lot of these mmos is the mob density. I feel like I'm fighting for every 5 feet that I travel, almost Diabloesque. I remember that especially bad in LotRO. Sometimes I'd like to travel around without being attacked by every wolf, boar, and tentacle monster.

Well, I agree, I like big areas, I loved Vanguard, but from listening to a pod cast with their lead developer, they intentionally did not make it huge.  They thought it would be distracting, a waste of space, and hurt function from the way they made it sound.  They said they wanted a dungeon in every zone, seems quests hubs near spawns, so they have gone for function.

I too prefer a little room, its hard to run anywhere without having to fight stuff most of the way, unless you take the long way by road.

I mean it doesn't make me hate anything, but I guess they wanted to make travel shorter, and things more convienient for people.  They said they didn't want vast empty and unused area that served no purpose.  So it was done by design, but like you said it probably gets better as you get higher level, more people have horses, and more people learn the game.

They said they took the approach that Rift would be someones first MMO, so they wanted to teach them to play as they went along.  This also is probably why many veterans can get turned off, they don't need taught, so things seem over simplified/repetitive.

I am looking forward to the later zones, and the open world pvp areas and some of the stuff they are working on, like contested rifts, dungeons and such in these zones.

Personally I like big worlds in MMO. I want to travel and explore. But I remember when beta-testing/playing Vanguard that a lot of players complained about the world being to big. I dont believe Vanguard failed because of that at all...

But some players dont want to travel or spend a lot of time running from one part of an area to another. If the world is small some players will complain about that. If its very big other players will complain. They will say it makes the world feel empty, difficult to find groups, difficult to play with your friends, its a waste of time to travel and so on...

So its impossible to make everyone happy...

Having a 'fast travel' option around a large world should mitigate any 'too much travel time' issues.

It works for most 'open world' games (Elder Srolls, EVE etc)

As long as the world doesn't feel too restrictive, the actual size (purely on numbers) is pretty irrelevant. It is the content.
