I signed up for WoW a few months back to see how Cataclysm went. I open my spam folder about 2 days after signing up and I noticed that I got a tremendous uptake in WoW Gold spam to my email account tied to the account I had with Battle.net.
I had never recieved spam for WoW gold up until I activated a trial account.
Am I the only one to notice this?

I still get tons of spam from fake Blizzard e-mails even though I have passed on my accounts urging me to click on the link provided in them. It has always amazed me is how I got them in the first place as I am always carefull about account security and have never bought gold or visited dodgy websites.
Funny thing is i've never had any problems like this from any other MMO. Another reason to the list why i'm glad I don't play WoW anymore.
More likely third party sites that have game forums or google, in your browser, tracking your clicks. Sell info to advertisers, they sell to douchebags.
I guess it bothers me because of the timing. Literally two days after signing up for the trial and I started getting these emails seems really fishy to me.
I don't know if it's a discredit to the internal processes, someone inside doing something they should not, or some other cause...
Edit: @Irishoak ... The only thing I had done with that email was sign up for battlenet and get the free trial. I use that account for just that purpose and do not use it for other sites (includig this one.) (edit2: Thought I should clarify... I only use that account for my subscriptions and only give it to companies, no third party sites.)
I still get dodgy emails from so called blizzard.
I tend to ignore all emails now, apart from the noreply@blizzard.com , but they generally are sent to me because i've written to them or changed me password, which I delete anyway.
If you get emails saying something on the lines of "get your free gift" or "important account information" delete, or add to spam.
If theres anything that needs to be done, log in on there official website, and not through any emails.
Better to be safe than sorry.
I won't go as far to say that Blizzard SOLD my information. But I will say that at the very LEAST, they don't protect our informationvery well. I have been getting spam for years now from "bliz" and now "battle.net" crap.
I doubt that they sold my email address to these spammers, but in the end, it doesn't matter HOW my email got to them.
It only matters that it did.
I really hope that *insert game name here* will be the first game to ever live up to all of its pre-release promises, maintain a manageable hype level and have a clean release. Just don't expect me to hold my breath.
One would wonder. I have a few email addresses I use. One is only used for my actual MMO accounts. That email gets "fake" emails from blizzard and now and then one about my Aion account (I'd give that to them if they asked). Yet no other MMO I've subscribed to do I get those or gold related. I've subbed to more MMO's than I'd like to admit but those are the only two games I've ever gotten these emails about.
I don't get these on my "forum" email nor do I get them from my Ebay/Paypal email that I used to sell UO and DAoC things on. Ultima Online when I used to play it was considered "ok" to sell accounts etc. DAoC allowed you to sell your account at least at one time. I only mention this part because as I said these emails never get the spam or "fake" account related messages.
im beginning to think some in side of blizzard is giving out emails. i recived a mail to to my safe address to day one that i do not post any where else and only use for wow . my account has been frozen since last year . but i all so change my wow mail to a new one over a year ago . so how did my old one end up being given out
this was the mail
{Mod Edit - please do not post copies of phishing emails.}
I downloaded and played the 10 day trail for this game about six months back, and my spam folder is filled with obvious phishing mail.
I definitely had no interest in signing up to any third party sites regarding WOW, so there is a sole and direct link with my signup with Blizzard. Go figure.
