Battlestar Galactica Online: Open Beta Launched

Bigpoint has announced that Battlestar Galactica Online has officially launched the open beta of the browser-based MMO based on the popular Syfy series. The game is a blend of tactical space combat, exploration, and mission-based gameplay.

David Eick, Executive Producer of Battlestar Galactica, said, “Bigpoint has successfully embraced the spirit of Battlestar Galactica’s aggressive ship design, tactile physics, and its signature, vérité-style combat aesthetic, and taken it all to an entirely new level. Playing this game is like watching the most highly-adrenalized, nail-biting episodes of the series while chewing on a hunk of uranium. I highly recommend it – just make sure you don't have anything else to do for a few days...”

It's basically a soft-launch, they will not be wiping characters or accounts from this stage forward.

So, if you're a BSG fan, check it out and see what you think. It is pretty impressive for a browser based title, don't get me wrong, it has its issues (controls and lag are the main issues currently) but it can be quite a bit of fun if you are looking for some quick, BSG themed action.

Yep its heading in the correct direction. Im sure they will improve it up to MMO based standard of this type of game (Search Quake Live. no lag and awesome browser based game.) Well both use .Net which you can make seemless mmo games without any issues and getting easier and easier with building upon Silverlight and other software of that genre.

Get back to me when they've got the login issues fixed.

Yes, yes, I know it's beta.  But telling me to download and install Opera?  No thanks.  I'll wait till it's a more functional browser-based game.  One that actually works on one of the two most popular browsers in use today.

Interesting so far.  The fact they have real BSG music in the game is fantastic!

    It works good on Chrome.

I just logged in and flew around a bit.

Its nice for a f2p browser game.

The combat is kinda odd though. more line of sight type stuff with a hard lock.

Graphics are decent, and i like that i can actually walk around sections of the ship.

could be fun for a bit.

I hope it won't be that expensive.

I only played for like 30 minutes but I am pretty impressed.  I am sorta treating it like a fan made game or something and pretending its not an official game (in my head).

At first when I was flying my ship around with my mouse I was like... WTH, mouse?!  But it actually feels pretty good/intuitive.  A LITTLE dissappointing that I cant turn one direction when my ships flying in the opposite direction, since part of why BSG is awesome is because they break the silly notions of space flight being like atmospheric flight ala star wars...  But I did only play for 30 minutes maybe I am missing something.  And the mouse controls are surprisingly intuitive.

Honestly I havent played a space combat action simulator since TIE FIGHTER came out in the 90s...  HAHAHA.
