Not once are we warned of the fact that we need to enter credit card details before we can actually play the game. It's a scam. DO NOT fall for this trial unless you are absolutely sure you want to enter your credit card info AFTER you have installed the game and made an account. That's right... they let you fully install the game , make an account and say you MUST enter credit card details to continue.
I wouldn't have a problem if human disease didn't exist , but what if you fell ill just before your expiration of trial account ?
AGAIN! Don't fall for this trial account crap!

Enter your card number. Activate the account. Cancel the billing. You will have 14 days and then you will need to enter your information again if you wish to continue playing.
Yes! And what if you're abducted by Aliens!? OMGZ!
sorry to inform you freind but disease DOES exist.
Anyway : absolutely NO clear warning is given as to the REQUIREMENT of a credit card to even get started.... The only time you are notified is AFTER you install the game and sign up an account.
In my opinion this is a pathetic attempt to trick people into reccuring bills with no clear statement that they will start charging you.
Not my idea. I think its a nice idea since after 14 day free trial you own the game/first expansion free. It says that billing will occur at next billing cycle which is after trial ends
Well I actually agree with this one. If it says FREE TRIAL there should be no need whatsoever to choose a method of payment, in fact one is the antithesis of the other.
EVE, Neocron and others manage to run a free trial, that is exactly what it says it is. When your time runs out then you shoose if you want to pay and continue.
The reason I dont like this practice is I caught by Real Player, I D/L the so called free trial I use the client, I uninstall it and next time I read my statement there is a charge for like $29.95 for my purchase of the full product I never asked for nor wanted. Of course I disputed it and got my cash back but it is just bad practice.

Well they want you to put ur details in so they know u will be a customer if you like the game :S They don't want people to use free services just for a 14 day fling.
if you don't have a credit card then don't play mmorpgs
And that explains why a lot of games offer gametime cards, paypal etc etc as alternative methods of payment....
Just as well your not managing the billing for probably 75% of the current MMO's Im sure there income would be dramatically reduced under your policy.
If I was you I would use my credit card to buy a clue.

I don't mind entering my card details as long as there is a fast and easy way to cancel...
I too recently tried the DAoC trial. Before I submitted my card info, I checked the billing page to review their cancellation policy to be sure I could bail out quickly. From what I head about the Matrix Online, you have to call to cancel and I friggin' HATE that! (Plus, I live in Japan)
Well despite a bizarre and disturbing trend of posters supporting companies who come up with creative new bogus ways to get details and charge cards. I still believe in the old school business practices of "saying what you do and doing what you say". I know its really not trendy but it is still the best way to do business that creates lasting relationships with customers.
I meant to say in my previous post. The easiest and most obvious way to stop people having a "free 14 day spree" (again a bizarre attitude and description) is not to offer one...
But as usual thats just too simple and honest to work in todays world, most people seem to prefer being lied to then defending the companies that lied to them to mask their emabaressment about being ripped off.
I must be getting old.

I too live in Japan and only have a JCB card to my name at the moment , I would enter my credit card details purely for something like age verification but I'm sick to death of entering them for what is most likely nothing.
They could reduce the 14 day repeat trial account makers by simply blocking more than one trial for one email address, or stopping the account after level XX like some others do. I know and appreciate the size of the database when too many accounts are created , so simply stick a time limit on an account that has never been paid and has been inactive for 30 days or something. Anything but scamming people out of credit card details. I mean , some kid could want to try DAoC ... ask their parents for credit card input .. and unknowingly get charged after they got bored of the game within the 14 day period and quit ( happend to me with toontown via Flets Square XD )
Listen you ignorant child. You need your CC number so Mythic can validate that you are not creating multiple accounts. They also require a CC to validate that a parent knows you are playing an online game. It is hardly a scam. Get real.

Trials are there so you can TRY the game BEFORE you buy it...if you don't have credit card, yer obivously not going to be p2p customer so...
Well the most expansive "free" trial is Saga of Ryzom since they charce $1 for it.
Their excuse is that they need to make sure that the account details are right........
Never heard anything like that........but anyway...........
What planet do some of you come from ???
There are MANY MANY MMO's that offer several alternative payments systems to credit cards. How do you resolve this against your bizarre assertion ?? Are you suggesting that WoW and EQ2 offer game time cards and go to all the expense of producing and promoting them for a laugh, even though sincerely believe that no one will ever buy them because only people with credit cards play MMO's
Additionally the assertion by a couple of you is that :
a) Only people with credit cards are genuine testers of MMO's that offer trials
and/ or
b) No one who owns a credit card would take advantage of an MMO company by simply playing for 14 days then cancelling (even though others of you give instructions on how to do it and admit you have)
and/or
c) Everyone who owns a credit card will become a P2P player from using a free trial
All of these assertions clutch so desperately at the straws of any conceivable logic that I can not believe you would have the courage and or stupidity to post them in public to be tested.
Might I suggest you do two things...

I am not a child , I am a causious 31 year old looking out for her future credit card bills and un-expected charges, which is what this automated charge system leads to in the end. I really thought this place was mature , aspecialy after someone I very much respect ( A member of mutable realms ) joined the team. Alas ... I am contradicted by the attitude of just one man.
I will never enter my CC number for anything other than age varification. If game developers dont like this or don't clearly state that it's ONLY for age varification ... then that's their choice. AKA : If losing customers is your thing ... then so be it.
Im really sorry for coming off agressive guys ... I'm not usualy like this
Azumi if your faith in a community is faltered by the words of one person then how strong is your link in the chain?
As to the other posters that are against giving out a CC number for a free trial I say this:
A credit card serves as to verify many things. Your age, your identity(real or faked), your word to up hold you side of the ULA. Kids don't get CCs and companies know this. If it were that easy can you imagine the type of lawsuit a company could get if they allowed underage kids to hop aboard their game and something terrible happened? Some slimeball tricked them out of some personal information: phone numbers, cc numbers or an address.
Now what if the parents found out? First thing they would try to do is blame the game conpany. "How can you allow a 10-year-old to play this game when perverts like that are playing as well?!?" I can here it now. Hell you wouldn't allow your 10-year-old kid to go to the mall alone at that age and IT'S free to get in. No my friend asking for a CC to me is a sound practice to keep businesses safe from unexpected problems. And I can't blame them for that.....
"Small minds talk about people, average minds talk about events, great minds talk about ideas."
You're partly right in this, and absolutely wrong that there is no clear statement that they will start charging you. They make that 100% clear in the details at the time you sign up. Read the material provided.
But where you are right is that they are relying on consumer sloth to create a paying customer. The same trend is used in magazine subscriptions and rebates. Plenty of people are too lazy to cancel magazines after a free trial, and they receive a bill and nasty calls from collections agencies which can be told to go to hell. Rebates are often not redeemed because consumers forget to mail the rebate in, or simply don't bother to at all.
This is not a scam. This is not a trick. This is an old business practice, older than you are and likely older than your parents and grandparents are.
Don't like it? Don't participate...'nuff said. But calling it a scam isn't going to make it go away.
Oh my god, I just got bronchitis and can't pay for my car this month.
