I'm not going to argue the similarity of RIFT to other mmo's and the lack of innovation, I'm simply targeting the people that say RIFT does a lot of the same things as other mmo's BUT does them better. Really? Because I can think of a lot of conventional things in RIFT that are NOT done better than mmo's whatsoever. Let's look
1. Questing
2. Crafting
3. Animations
4. Sound / music
5. Combat pacing
6. Dungeon design
7. Achievements
8. Collectibles
9. Character customization
10. Zone size and overall immersion
All of those things I listed are done about the same as other mmo's, or worse. So what is it that RIFT does better than other mmo's besides graphics (arguable), rift's and the soul system?

Enough with the dead horse. He's getting tired of being beaten. If you want to form an opinion of Rift, hop into the Open Beta next week. Beauty is in the eye of the beerholder, and you are holding the beer.
Nothing I can say will convince you, so see for yourself.

It just takes some stuff from a few different games and puts them together in one package. Being creative seems to be a thing of the past :-(
Hehe please.

Rift have like Wow good coding and deliver for once a game that isn't broken. That is it's strenght together with some good character customization.
But I don't think it takes stuff from other games and make them better, most stuff is rather similar.
Rift is however the first MMO in a long time that isn't released way too early, and that if nothing else makes it a very interesting game. Last game like that were GW or possibly LOTRO (but LOTRO just had so little content at launch).
Good game, but not much new or better besides the coding. That is however enough to impress most of us after years of broken games.

All of those things I listed are done about the same as other mmo's, or better. So what is it that RIFT does worse than other mmo's besides causing maniacs to post a dozen threads a day just like this one?
Please provide your answers in single spaced format of at least 3 pages on each numbered topic. Don't simply make an overly broad 3 sentence statement of personal opinion followed by a bullet point list then demand that others disagreeing with you explain their own opinions when you clearly will accept no such justifications. That would just be asinine.
I was in 2 of the beta events and I don't see what is so new about this game. This game lack races, unique classes, and the world feels very small and linear. Don't say pvp is good here because it's the same thing we see in most mmos, warhammer's pvp is way better.
I guess it appeals to some people but they too have failed to justify why this game is so good to them.
Clearly you have not read the forums and you do not explain yourself as well. Seriously, why do so many people that do not enjoy playing this game cruise the game's forums and post...really. You like stalking people that have found a game they enjoy and throw down vague negativities.
I did not care for the Cataclysm expansion, no longer entertaining to me. So I move on to a new game...no posts, don't care to share why I am not entertained. If you like playing the game, have fun! If not, CHANGE THE CHANNEL and MOVE ON.
Fine, well since I can't sleep and have nothing better to do:
1. Quests are actually the worst thing in Rift. Often boring quests that it feels like I done one time to many.
2. More or less the same as most other games. Better than AoCs, worse than VGs.
3. The animations are pretty good or at least not so bad that I notice them. A few more variotions wouldn't hurt but they are not as bad and clunky as WARs or VGs.
4. There is music? the sounds are fine enough except the voice acting in the opening scenes, it is worse than Madonna in her movies.
5. The combat pacing is fine enough. I can't say if they are better or worse than other game but combat floats fine, even if it lacks surprises.
6. I only seen the starter dungeon, I can't comment just based on it.
7. They are fine enough.
8. More or less cut and pasted from EQ2. Still, shinies is a good feature from that game so I give thumbs up.
9. Excellent. Rifts second strongest point besides programming. Only 4 classes but you can do a lot with them. Still needs balancing though.
10. So so. The zones feels pretty small and the questgivers often feels pretty out of place. Reminds me of early EQ2.
Rifts main point is that it is very well coded. The content still lacks a lot but so do most games at launch, and as long as they add stuff this game will be somewhat larger than EQ2 and LOTRO. It have potential and launches in good state.
On the other hand don't I think it can stand up against GW2 and TOR, both Bioware and ANET have way more experienced people and the companies have many fans.
Rift will be a fine game and around for many years, but it isn't as great as some people think and wont be the next big one. But if the top 5 list is fine enough I think the game will do good.
For me the game is good because it takes the familiar and adds a bit on top of it. Changes are not so major that it leaves people thinking "wtf?'.
The soul system for example; It uses a layout that is familiar to people who have played games like WoW, using almost the same building technique. The difference is you are not locked into 3 specs per character roll. Instead they allow you to pick and chose specific abilities that fit your current playstyle while also allowing you to change out to a totally different class within your main calling. In other games this would basically require an entire reroll with another class. Each class does feel unique once you get passed the starting portion of the game.
In PvP people only know that you are either a Warrior/Rogue/Cleric/Mage and thats it until they see how you are using skills/abilities. Even if they manage to ID which souls you are using you can easily switch to a whole new role/spec and keep them guessing. Is PvP the same as it is in other games? Sure - you try to kill your opponent before they kill you, but thats about it.
Is questing linear? I guess. It feels about the same as 99% of the quests in games like WoW/LOTRO/Etc, but then again unlike most other games you don't have to quest to get the best progression rate to endgame.
The biggest thing I like about the game is more the team behind it than the actual game itself. Trion has shown that they are willing to work with the players, and when they try something that doesn't work out they admit their mistake and change it. They try not to keep the players in the dark, which can't really be said about most dev teams out there at the moment.
Thing is people who like the game do infact justify why they like it. Problem is the people who don't like it tend to ignore and/or invalidate those reasons.
There are 3 types of people in the world.
1.) Those who make things happen
2.) Those who watch things happen
3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"
You know, you don't need to take anything out of other MMOs to make a mmorpg.com success. Just take EQ1 or UO, strap them in a brand new graphics engine with a decent modern UI and you can sell it as is. No need to do anything better at all, just the same old in brand new coating.
Rift is a little bit of that, at least for the parts that we've been allowed to see in beta. I don't think it does anything better than other games. But it does bring the freshness along with the old timer atmosphere and that works for some people.
The novelty may not last for long, but it seems that unlike previous "clones", this particular one will probably stand on its feet and won't see them collapse under him. The real test of course will come when the competition will start with the offerings sometime by the end of 2011 or early 2012.
@OP: it's all relative and in the eye of the beholder, if people are having a great, fun time in Rift than to them Rift does better in the several gameplay areas.
What most people have serious trouble grasping is that other people can have a different experience than they themselves had, for some reason people think that how they experienced the game - whether good or bad - is the ultimate truth about that game so that leads to their conclusion that other people who disagree with their viewpoint must be lying or be blinded by fanboism or jadedness.
Aion had the problem that when the PvP got even the slightest bit heavy, framerate dropped like a stone and player characters got 'blinked out' so only their names remained to be targeted. Which is a pretty important issue when PvPing, haven't seen this happen in Rift even when the fights get hectic. Also, you might want to talk to a lot of ex-Aion players about how they felt about the L25-30+ grind.

You (Those people in general) truely are not the center of everyone's universe. That's what they truely need to wrap their brains around.
Aion has probably the best way to customize your armor, allowing you to change both colors and models. Rift allows you to change primary and secondary colors, which puts it far away and ahead of WoW. It also has better character customization (models) than WoW does. And Warhammer.
The downside to Aion's character customization is that you only see two types of characters.. people who are stupidly gorgeous, and people who are trollingly ugly. There really isn't much inbetween.
.. But in a good way.
So far judging from the replies (which have been outright trolling for the most part) it appears that outside of a couple of areas (Rifts, Soul system) Rift doesn't do anything better than the average theme park MMO, mostly its appeal lies in that its new, it works well and is fun to play for those looking for a game like this.
Nothing wrong with that, but it does seem to be the conclusion one can draw.

Well one important way for me was my toon, the viable archer with a pet, while at the same time being a viable stealth assassin, yet at the same time a viable rogue tank, all rolled into one. Trions idea of character building which I agree has its roots in a few well knonw mainstream games, still seems damned unique to all the other theme park games I've played. I haven't had this much fun building characters since the early days of DAOC or Shadowbane.

Nope, i dont agree with that, if you swamp EQ1/UO for WAR/WoW then ill agree, the core definition of Rift is a quest driven MMO and neither EQ1 nor UO were.
And because they are not quest driven you wouldn't be able to enjoy UO/EQ with updated graphics ... why?
Agreed. It's refreshing actually being able to customize your skillset. Haven't been able to do that in an MMORPG in a long time.
WoW sure as hell doesn't allow that.. hell they further made it less customizable with Cata and reducing the talent trees from 51 points to 31, then pidgeonholing you into the first one you pick for 31 points. Less customization than Classic, even
.. But in a good way.
I will but there is nothing in the market like EQ with updated gfx, instead Rift is WoW/WAR with updated gfx imo, thats the point of my correction to you, Rift is not an updated from EQ it is from WoW.
If there is a EQ version with updated gfx point me to it because ill sub. rigth now
