In this week's Community Spotlight, MMORPG.com's Mike Bitton has chosen a topic that most of us would find ourselves nodding in agreement with: Emote consistency across our favorites MMOs. Check it out and then add your thoughts to the original forum thread.
I don't like when developers invent silly new words for the same thing.
A /tell became a /whisper in WoW.
A group became a party in WoW.
A guild became a linkshell in FFXI and FFXIV.
A server is a shard in Rift, a realm in WoW.
Stop making up new words that mean the exact same thing please, it's just confusing.

Pretty sure UO had "shards". don't hate on Rift for going back to the roots.
Yeah, shard is a pretty old term
Ragnarok Online was called their groups "parties" long before WoW.
I don't have trouble keeping track. None of it confuses me. And I smoke a shitton of incense.
As long as the game stays consistent within itself. a group doesn't suddenly become a party or a team then i'm okay.
I actually like when each game brings up a new term for their game. Keeps it from feeling like another game i've played.
Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.
Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.
I guess it might be confusing if English, or whatever launguage the game is localized in is not your native language. If you are still having trouble, it's possible you should maybe stick to facebook games.
Isn't it pretty evident that synonyms are used to give the illusion of uniqueness? One game has clans, missions and mutations, another has guilds, quests and magic... all the same thing, but people can get ridiculously defensive if someone uses the "wrong" term about a particular game.
It's not that hard to get used to using different words for the same thing, and even if you're not inclined to, it's not like people won't understand what you mean when you use the terminology that's more familiar to you.
Thanks for bringing some sanity to this thread.
