Rifts is fun as hell, to be honest any mmo is what you make of it. The pvp needs work, but I'm sure the dev's will address this. The pve is great, and very eq1ish. The first real dungeon you hit Iron Tombs is very fun, 90% of the people whipped right after 2nd boss, because the pulls require CC regardless if you out lvl the dungeon or not. Long story short if you want a game that will be fun and very dev invovled then I recommend this game for you. THe best way to express this is in beta about every 30 minutes the dev's address an issue and fix it. Like anything else though give it a shot, anyone who games has enough money to waste on a game for atleast the free month, hell I even tried DCUO and tbh it was rather enjoyable. Sadly to say the guild I ran with went through all the endgame content in the first week of release. For that one month though I had had a great time, give rifts this oppurtunity.
looking at the join date, number of posts in that time, and the one sided 'promotional nature' of the post I know what i think of this OP.
you really dont want rift to succeed do you.
I'll be honest here, at first I wanted Rift to succeed. Then I realized Rift needs to fail horribly. It needs to prove concretely to all the developers out there that copying games that already exist in the wild (especially World of Warcraft) is an evolutionary dead end. Rift needs to fail, not because I have anything against the game itself, but because it will make the future of MMOs more healthy in the long run.
Prove Concretely to the developers?....You're right they have done 0 research on what it takes for a game to succeed. They are all blindly dumping tons of money into a formula that doesn't work. When is the 'developers aren't listening to community and make a sandbox game with 3 factions and hardecore pvp' crowd realize they are a vocal minority you just happen to be the loudest. You do not make up even 10% of the MMO community, and thats being generous. Money speaks louder than your opinion....Companies are not making those games because they are not profitable it has nothing to do with breaking the mold or trying to innovate.

And by the way: Dark Age of Camelot was the second successfull mmorpg after everquest in its time... and this game was PvP centric and had three realms. but it seems that 200.000+ subscribers won't make you any money by some magical reason in these days... profit starts at 1mio subs today it seems.. -_-
A bit premature to state that this is the best game since DAoC when you have no information on the end game PvP.
I'll keep it simple: Three factions > Two factions and from my experience in the beta, DAoC beats Rift hands down for concept and design. Only thing Rift has over it is a more modern polish. The rest is just a 'designed by committee' blend of meh.

Stop using strawman arguments and you will look less stupid; believe me! When did this guy say he wanted any of the things you mentioned? Maybe he is just tired of this stupid GPS Quests with no dept.

A game using the technology from DAoC will not sell today. Development costs, including today's technology for server communication, physics, graphics, animation, world editors, etc is much more than it used to be. Unless you want a game that doesn't use all that new tech and latest talent. Then load up an indie MMO like Darkfall, Ryzom, Love or Vanguard (Not-Indie-But...). If you want a game that will be triple AAA quality then it's not gonna happen on a cheap tech.
That's the trade off. You either get top quality tech and overall shallow mechanics, or you get lower quality and deeper mechanics. One is going to be the AAA MMO and the other is going to be a niche MMO.
This game has nothing in common with DAoC. Why is it even mentioned in the same sentence is beyond me.
Please explain the similarities
Quite. Love, hate or indiffent to Rift, it clearly has fairly few similarites to DAoC. Discussing it is about as usueful as debating with someone claiming that whales fly.
Whatever Rift may be similiar to, I was surprised by how entertaining beta play was. It was fun, I like the lore thus far and enjoy the game play. I'm a casual player and do appreciate some familiar pieces in the game with some refreshing approaches.

I will not play a broken and unfinished game even if the developers are trying to target my niche 100%. I mean if it feels like the game needs one more year to get ready it is just a bad gaming experience.
Quality and polish will always be important. If they want me to pay the same monthly fee as I would if I played the mainstream AAA-games they will have to offer a good product...
Internet and the number of internet users is much bigger today compared to when games like DAoC or EQ was released.
So a niche market can be big even if its smaller than mainstream. And if someone is trying to create a mainstream game there will be much more competition. A company must always think about competition before trying to enter a market.
Often it will be better for a company to try to target a niche compared to try to compete with gigantic very popular mainstream games....
{Mod edit} Yea you like the game, but stop saying everything is perfect. cause nothing ever is >< and no cartoony? this game is pretty cartoony if you ask me..
The game is just meh imo, i couldnt get past playing more then a few hours in beta..Same old and boring combat system that we have had for the last 10 years. Boring same old quests etc. Too me it seemed like another WoW clone.
The devs do actually seem too listen tough, and they bring out great patches it seems. Too bad they waste it all on this game. Think how awesome this game would be if they atleast tryed to do something abit more unique and innovate.
Ah well, wasted potential. Lets hope rift earns them a ton of money and the devs can start working on something better for their next game.
This isn't aimed at you Proson but it seems that the devs of the last few games that have been released were all trying to do something 'new and innovative'. There weren't any big crowds that stuck around and they caught a lot of hate on forums from something not being polished or bug free. Now we have a dev team that is releaing something polished and it sounds innovative to me, I haven't been in any betas yet waiting on the 15th to roll around. I've never seen a class system like this. Anyway, I don't like that this dev team is releasing something polished, it is of quality but their catching the same hate on the forums as the unfinished game dev teams.
Rift is nothing like DAOC. DAOC is superior in almost every way (except for graphics and GUI).
Then why did more people play in the last Rift beta than have logged into DAOC in the past 2 years combined?
hrmm. well maybe its a beta and people want to try it out? You think all the people in the beta will buy this game? I'm in beta and i will not buy this game so...
If this game doesnt appear to be similar to others except its placed before you in a different skin, by all means continue to play it. If you dont mind them twisting everything thats already been done a million times just a little bit, and if that illusion is sufficient to fool you into thinking there's originality and creativity here, go ahead and continue to deceive yourself. As long as you're having fun doing it:)
I'm in beta and I'm not buying it either. They have a gazillion and one fedex quests in this game and about time I get to doing Rifts I really have no desire to do them.

Your assuming that those who do enjoy the game are somehow deceiving themselves.ZMost who are saying they do like the game know it's a traditional MMORPG with it's roots deep in non sandbox MMORPGs and indeed in old slower paced, story driven single player RPGs from the past.
They don't expect the "themepark" MMORPG to suddnely evolve into a compeltely different action game genre and are happy with what is offered with no illusions. It's fine that you don't want to paly that type of game but arrogant to beleive those who do are of lowere intellect or self deceiving.

Originality? Creativity? In the MMO genre? In 2011? What is there left to do that hasn't been done before in the thousans of MUDs, hundreds of MMOs, or single player games that have already been made? lmao
If you don't like the game wait for TOR or TERA to come out. I for one hate asian grinders i.e. TERA, and will try TOR but haven't played it yet so have no opinion on it. The rest of you should try to do the same thing, and if you don't like rifts, just wait for something else. The PVP in this game is similiar to EQ 1 when it came out, characters were unbalanced, yet people played the shit out of it and happily continued to log in. The reason the rifts were all over the place in the last beta's was due to the GM's running STRESS TESTS on the server to attempt to avoid the mistake other triple AAA mmo titles have ran into upon release, "shitty starts". If you have a beta key you can log into the beta forums and read what the dev's are saying.
The game is just meh imo, i couldnt get past playing more then a few hours in beta..Same old and boring combat system that we have had for the last 10 years. Boring same old quests etc. Too me it seemed like another WoW clone.

Ya, this. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
It's better than WoW.
It's better than all MMORPG's that are out at this time.
It is better because it takes all the parts that worked from many games and leaves the flaws behind.
You may think that there is a better game comming out soon but really you are just in for more dissapointment. Just buy and xbox and a guitar. Those should take care of any free time you have.
Hats off to the team, they did it, they listened to all our moaning, and made the perfect game, no cartoony for kids, hansel and gretel type Wow graphics!!!! No grind all day every day AION (With odd looking pets), no LFG woes because its auto grp, give it a try all you fans of DAOC who have felt let down since, over and over again, you will love it, it has perfect balance for leveling, RvR is great on pvp servers coz people are leveling and questing in the zones!!!!! very important.
End game cant say yet, but hopfully they will have castles or somthing to hold and take, seems the devs are listening this time.
It was nearly Aion coz of the cool flying, yet it was missing somthing, and talk about grind, this has it all in balance, the class system is perfect, so many options with 3 souls to choose, and respec is easy, so custom class will come down to your play style, with one being better for you, and one being better for someone else.
PVE is rocking, awesome mobs, and the rifts are a great idea to suprise you into gaining some extra xp and auto grouping up and working together without having to ask or be invited.
They do have BGs, but they are same as War, too damn repetative, not like Daoc BGs where it depended on who owned the castle and keeps, so it was either = lets take back that keep today, or, lets defend this castle today etc, always something new! However the BGs are very kind with XP, so you could level to 50 in there same as Daoc.
I just hope the end game has worthwhile RVR, the great thing in Daoc was (as mentioned), you could take a castle or a keep with a group, and enemy players would hear of this sacking, and come try take it back, or people would always be in the RvR zones leveling thier artifacts, which made it busy. Or sieges! with the whole server turning out was like somthing right out of the middle ages.
Tryed WAR, was ok for a week or two, but was missing somthing, hard to say what it was, maybe just too repetitive in the end, and graphics were missing somthing important, again so hard to say, its a mystery what makes some games brillaint and some poor.
Role pvp server, you do not have to fight till level 20, then you must get out in the zones and quest where you will have to be on your guard, which makes the heart beat all the faster for it. But npg will come to your aid, and plenty of peeps about to give you a hand if you run into me;)
Its a strange concept this MMO stuff, I think its like all art, it comes down to so many things that the human mind can not replicate it each and every time, so it is very fortunate when one arrives,. Well here it is again, at last!
Kids and young teens stay with Wow please, ty
PS. if you download now, you should/could be invited to a 6day beta this tuesday.
How can the OP say this is the best game since DAOC when it doesn't even have 24/7 persistent DAOC like rvr?Aa the writer says...He hopes it will...but is currently DOES NOT.Are people so that anxious to post something "positive" about the game even when DAOC like RVR simply isn't in the game despite over 6 months of pleading from DAOC vets.

Interesting discussion, but you are forgeting a basic point.
Rift is a PvE centric game with some PvP.
The PvP is unbalanced and it will continue unbalanced because the game is being balanced for PvE.
And the endgame is PvE (advanced dungeons, raid rifts and raid instances) and not PvP.

If Rift is the best game released since DAOC, that says a lot about how bad all the games that have been released in the last 10 years are.
