Well I decided to donate $15 to Funcom one last time before Rift launches and I turn the page on my mmo gaming career. Yes AoC you were my top mmo. I remember running through Tortage at launch. All the fatalities, busting heads open in the dungeons, naked women.... it was fun and I doubt any other mmo will get all those things together in a game any time soon. You have your flaws but you'll always be my #1 mmo for the decade past... only one I hit max level playing. In the meantime, I'll be waist deep in the grasslands with my 80 DT Beastgutter, grinding faction gear and hunting down baby tigers for the next few days.

I understand and respect your opinion. Like I said, I loved playing AoC for a long time. There are things in AoC that we won't see again for a while. But I'd favor Rift for being more polished and complete in Beta 1 than AoC is now going on 3 years after release. I think we all agree AoC is one of those "Could've been great" mmos. I think it needs to go F2P to get the population back. From there it can possibly regain some of it's mid 2008 glory.

This game just doesn't seem to have the population anymore. I've been playing Rift as well but I have to say, the combat, graphics, animations, overall feel of the world in AoC is just superior. I wouldn't mind playing again but last time I played I felt like I was in an empty world, sad really.

No mmo that I've played compares to the feeling of chopping off heads in AoC.

besides wiccanna that game is a ghost town. and playing AoC on a pve server is the dullest thing on the planet.

    Playing: Smite, Marvel Heroes
Played: Nexus:Kingdom of the Winds, Everquest, DAoC, Everquest 2, WoW, Matrix Online, Vangaurd, SWG, DDO, EVE, Fallen Earth, LoTRo, CoX, Champions Online, WAR, Darkfall, Mortal Online, Guild Wars, Rift, Tera, Aion, AoC, Gods and Heroes, DCUO, FF14, TSW, SWTOR, GW2, Wildstar, ESO, ArcheAge

I enjoy the heck out of  Conan PVE.  Well, that is meaning the game from 1-80. I think Conan from 1-80 is some of the best gaming I have experienced in quite a while. You can go a ton of places to find more sutiable PVP action if that is your thing. But there is only one game out there that takes the Conan IP and runs with it. On a good rig with a decent sound system and monitor, Age of Conan really comes to life. It is the only hack n slash game I have found that I enjoy as much as Diablo 2, which was another favorite online RPG.

The Set PVE  server is not empty. I see other players wherever I go.  It is not jam packed, but it is no ghost town either. Also the Dreamworld engine upgrade is just  about ready to deploy. Reports from the test servers is that performance will be getting a sweet boost. The game should be more optimized and run faster,  so we will see how that turns out shortly.

I feel ya OP. I'm thinking about resubbing to either AOC or AO after finals/projects.

Not waiting for any MMOs atm though. Currently playing World of Tanks, it's like crack.

    AOC is a good game.

I just started playing got a guild invite from some nice people right of the bat. All servers have been on medium population at lowest whenever I see the server lists.

Haha..  Funcom changed the ´server status´about 3 months after launch.  At the time, many people were saying that AOC was failing and using the number of servers on ´low´as proof.  then one day, every server was on ´medium´ and stayed that way for the past 2 years.  Middle of the night,  8am wednesday... doesnt matter.. all servers are always medium.   Which should basically tell you about the integrity and marketing that is AOC.

Set server status could say "Desolate" as far as I'm concerned...as long as I am having fun and still see all the players running around. Which is the case whenever I have time or inclination to log on.

This is true. Set is not vacant or anything like vacant. You will always see other players in the game when you logon. For PVE the population is not bad at all. I don't need to be bumping elbows with a mass of other players, competing for quests, waiting around for mobs and bosses to spawn. I suppose Funcom would love a huge increase in players, but I am happy with the current server load.  I actually think it fits the Conan IP just fine  having a thiner population rather than playing in a game  crowded with other players.

Also I belong to a guild so that keeps the game from feeling lonely. If you feel the population is too sparse to group, or whatever you need to do with other players, join a guild. I belong to a guild that was always announcing raid and PVP battles. If I wanted to do any of that stuff, I only had to volunteer  and join a party.

Well I'm just stating on what I saw. I hardly saw another person out in the world when I was playing. Maybe I'll try a different server if I play again (I was on Set PVE in the U.S.)

i play on Crom PVE (Europe) and there's always someone to play with.

AoC has great features it's just sad they rushed it out unpolished.

The game improved a lot but the UI is still crap and that's our main link between the game and us.

Combat wise they should never have abandoned the console combo system and let it  felt in the password protected skills.

With the Conan movie to come the game can still be slavaged:

    • First implement a F2P system ala Turbine (LotRo and DDO).

    • Then revamp the UI and allow WoW like mods with decent API system.

    • Tweak the combat to make it more visceral: bring it on a console combo system, revamp the shield system to make it faster and needed.

    • Add Xbox game pad controller support and let players remap everything.

    • Revise PvP

    • Add a social clothing tab and gear dyes. Also add sexyer barbarian gear and pants!

I've been on Set since launch and seen it's population rise and fall numerous times. Will be interesting to see what happens when Rift launches. My guild and a lot of the other major guilds on Set are all leaving AoC for rift. I just don't think there's any hope left for AoC. Funcom has mismanaged the game so poorly that it is my opinion that it can never recover.

All I can say is every time a new game comes out we hear the same thing over and over I am going to game x.

Only time will tell how many folks actually go to game-x and stay with it.

I gave up conan back in october, not looking back but I did not give it up for rift, or any other game, I just gave it up because I felt taht the game was in a broken state and it was never going to be fixed.

  • DismantledDismantled Member UncommonPosts: 121

I dont think so much it's people just going to Rift because it's new. I think it's more because Rift runs better in beta then AoC has after being out for 3 years.

  • haratuharatu Member UncommonPosts: 409

I am looking for something to replace AoC. I think AoC will just be what I will call in the future "the game that filled the gap between Tabula Rasa and Rift".

  • djazzydjazzy Member Posts: 3,578

After playing AoC and the combat I found it hard to play Rift's combat (or any other mmo really). I definitely miss it.

AOC blows Rift out of the water thats all there is to it in my eyes, fatalitys, mounted combat, combo system, better graphics if you can afford to kick it up a notch, better pvp, more mature themed game all around. Im not trying to stamp anyones views of Rift out but this is just what I see. I think Rift will do ok but I wont be spending any money to play it.

I went to WoW after AOC and I just see why AOC has failed so badly.  It's not down to the game itself, it's down to the lack of interest in the game by the developer.  It's fine to sit back and be developing the next expansion, or working on bug fixes (ha, ha, ha), but you have to actively participate in your own game.  That doesn't mean you play the game what it means if you give the players reason to play the game.

Good points, I'd like to add some of my own:

    - make the melee and caster combat like the ranger combat, namely combo skills that you can fire off blankly or where you can add different effects by the directional keys, not just obligatory chains This would greatly enhance the combat fun.

    - Completely make over Bori, even if it is 'too little, too late', it could still help.

    - Make the faction gain in RotGS a lot faster and add variety to the number of ways you can gain faction.

    - Scalable dungeons (it scales to highest level of the team) and cross server dungeons: with the few servers there are, you have less the problem with anonimity leading to more antisocial behaviour as happens in WoW from time to time.

    - Fix the end level dungeon issues and implement more of the mechanics seen in RotGS to other dungeons.
