Lol, a car or a house . . . i don't compare an 8 year old video game to buying a car or a house. Something is wrong if i'm enduring a comparable process between a video game, and a car/house.
Yes PlayOnline is clunky, but the game was released a long time ago, and I played at NA launch and didn't have any issues. To cancel your account you can do that from PlayOnline--->Final Fantasy XI----> Content IDs and delete an ID. But, I played FFXI with only a keyboard and it is one of my favorite games on how it worked with a keyboard. Yes, you need to forget everything else you know of MMOs, but I thought it pretty natural. I used the numpad to move, 4 8 6 2 on the num pad is like
<--- ^ ---> and V with 5 putting it to first person. the - brings up the menu, hit again for the next menu. Enter is right there to go through the menus. You can use the arrow keys to move the camera and just pretty much use 8 for forward, use the left and right arrows to orient yourself in a different direction. Combat just use arrows and enter and use macroes. I practically played with one hand unless I needed a macro.
Yes the game is a little outdated, but they still have new content, a strong base, and it is very fun. Yes it is fairly difficult but it is so much easier to level now than it used to be, what with Lvl Synching and all. It really isn't that difficult. Please dont make it more difficult than it is. If you had any interest in it at all, please just try to get used to the control scheme. It is easier if you had bought the game from a store, rather than steam i think, you'd have a manual and would have seen the controls. Not sure how steam works for that, honestly. It does seem like you've had some trouble, but that isn't too common really. Yes, PlayOnline sucks, but it is still fairly straight forward. PlayOnline is the worst part of FFXI. Get into the game and actually playing and you should be fine. And personally, like I've said, the keyboard controls can be great if you know how to do it.
Thanks, again sounds like an excellent community. However, i did manage to find a square enix support number, and the rep. closed my account without any explanation. I never played the game, bought it less than 24 hours ago, and now can't get my money back. The rep. said once he cancelled it he couldn't change it back. They told me to contact Steam for my money reimbursed. I don't understand why my account was closed, I was only trying to figure out how to cancel my sub. after 30 days which i PAID for. This was a bad experience, and I would not reccommend a Square Enix game. I will also make a review under the rating concerning this, but I will be fair to the original game, since I'm sure it's great. This is more to do with Square Enix, and Playonline.
I'm sorry to hear that. I do hope you get your money back on that. Normally when they cancel a sub you still have your 30 days so, they CLOSED the account and not just cancelled Sub, that is a little odd. I'm sure there is a way to undo it, and he probably just was lazy. That's too bad. I really encourage people to try it out, and it is sad that getting to the game winds up as hard as flying a fighter jet sometimes. Too bad though, it is a good game. Better luck in finding your next game. Personally, guild wars 2 is looking awesome.
Good luck,
Eiado

I'm not trying to be disrespectful here, but everything you've posted up to actually playing the game has seemed odd.
I tried to personally walk you through fixing the graphics, and told you where to look to change the in game configuration? I don't see any confirmation that you tried any of those things. you skip from wanting help, to a few minutes later saying you have to cancel your bank account, which is a little bit far fetched imo.
You could have either, followed the instructions given to you in order to get past the parts your having trouble with, or called SE and asked how to cancel your subscription, or we would have been able to direct you on how to do that.
the entire process consists of a number of steps, but they are back to back and ask you for general info, of then which you either click next/submit. once you were done with that, you'd have been logged into playonline, it would have updated, and any final info would have been asked for. then, you would have went to games --- ffxi and it would have also updated. Once that was done, you would have gone to "content ID' and you'd have registered a new content ID.. it would have asked you for the key steam gave you, that would activate all the content, In this same menu, are the options to "CANCEL" which you would have easily seen doing the process to create the account in the first place.
I was only 22 or so when i started playing. I'm 29 now. Never had an issue. Maybe its not the "best" process, but it works if you follow it exactly. My only gripe with the steam version is that there needs to be a manual or something included that goes through the account creation process.
I just think cancelling a bank account or a customer service rep CLOSING a sub, sounds a little odd. I work in customer service, and we'd try everything in our power to find out why you want to cancel and how to keep that from happening before we did. I've called SE support a few times myself, and while they aren't the best.. i've never had anyone suggest closing my account for any reason.
but, alas you've made up your mind and maybe you will find a game that suits you better.

Listen, first thing is first. You assumed I was unfamiliar with the Steam client and I'm sure you made further assumptions on everything else. I was nice, courteous, and respectful. I'm not as computer literate as most of the members of these forums, and have only been playing these games for a year and a half off and on. Everything I said makes perfect sense, and I never once insulted the game. I even clearly stated I had never gotten to play it other than creating a character and attempting to use the interface and change settings. Your help was going on, while you were at work as stated, and I was in my own world, off of work, and attempting to contact support to find out how to cancel my subscription. I had no intention of canceling just yet, I merely wanted to make sure I could. In addition, I had read about the billing cycle starting at the first of the month regardless of when the game was purchased, and I wanted to find out about that too. There were a lot of user agreements going on, and tons of userUNfriendly steps in the register/download process. (and yes, you stated it is also a console game which I now understand) My situation was unfortunate, and i'm sure I could call Square Enix back, get someone different on the phone, throw a fit or complain and give them my card info again, re-verify and play the game for 30 days. But to be honest, I'd rather be reimbursed at this point. And I don't appreciate someone I don't know insinuating something is amiss, or that I'm not telling the truth. That is the exact opposite of the kind of person I'd want to share a gaming experience with.

noone is insinuating that you are not telling the truth.
I just was stating that cancelling your entire bank account is a little odd considering there are better ways to do it. When your working "remotely" trying to help someone, its often part of the job that the user knows "nothing". Its not meant to offend, but I have to assume you know nothing at all because for all I know, you don't until I've asked enough questions to prove that false.
You only have to register once, just seemed weird that you'd want to cancel the entire thing when you never have to do it again unless you decide to resub later on. I would have suspected from someone looking for a more mature experience that you'd have at least given the game itself a try before you went to those extremes. But like you said, I don't know you and you don't know me. I've wished you well in your search for a mature game thats easy to register and install. May you find what your looking for.

Hey, no problem. I'm glad you clarified. I thought you might have been condescending, so I apologize for my misinterpretation. And for the record, I never had to close my bank account. That statement was not meant to be entirely literal, although i would have closed it if I had not been able to talk to support. (Believe it or not, some of these games can be very difficult to stop the payments processing every month) Ok, so everything is fine. I'm out five bucks, no big deal. Truly hope other people continue to enjoy the game. Take care.
Same thing happened to me, twice. SE seems to be very ban-happy when it comes to new accounts. I've been playing this game for awhile now (since the game was released in the US), but I ended up buying the ultimate collection off of D2D awhile ago so I could have a digital backup copy of the game (lost my discs eons ago, and I don't like Steam). I ended up using both the retail key and the buddy key that I got, and both accounts I had made had gotten banned without any explanation, literally in less than a week. I tried contacting someone down at support, and they just weren't going to tell me why they had banned the accounts. I hadn't talked to anyone or made any transactions through the AH the entire time on either of the accounts. I never even got past rank 1, and then I just get banned for no reason. I've also read about plenty of other new players being banned almost immediately after starting out in the game as well, even though they've done absolutely nothing to warrant a ban.
So with that in mind, I don't think that Greene getting banned like he did was odd or in any way his fault, since that seems to be becoming the norm for new accounts now (randomly being banned that is).
Thank-you Necro for some validation. I enjoy these forums and being a member of this site. However, sometimes people don't always read posts in the most comprehensive manner and assume their game is under some kind of attack. It's good to hear from someone else who had a less than favorable experience with Square Enix. I wouldn't however say my account was banned; I did speak again with customer support and they did mention I could probably re-open the account. But of course, after such an over-blown process just to play the game, I won't waste my time. There are much more streamlined opportunities for gaming fun nowadays, especiallly when debit/credit card accounts are concerned. Definitely not a game for kids, since they usually have far less patience than I do. And in that sense, my original question was answered.
Ok, well just to update . . . I did create a character, but can't access settings or a game menu. When I alt tab the game experiences error and disconnects. The interface is non existant so far, and the graphics are fuzzy. I have no experience to be negative about this game, but I am unable to just jump in and begin learning/playing. I'm open-minded, but may not be willing concerning I can't even access a game menu, or change settings. Don't mean to offend anyone who is a fan, and would love any advice/help. At the moment, i'm going to try to be reimbursed my five bucks, but realize that is probably a silly request. Thanks, and good luck to those who are enjoying.
Ok, first off... forget everything you know about the MMO's you've played.
This one was designed for a console first and PC second...
the UI is all menu based.
the config is not located "in game' you must go to start.. programs.. square enix.. ffxi config.. and adjust it there. I can tell you how to max out the graphics so that they aren't blocky... the config will help some, but there are setting tweaks that can make it look great. The UI is 100% menu based, and you'll want to more than likely either get a game pad, or there are some who play on a kb effectively.. I just never have. they can chime in on that part. Give me a sec and I will find a link to help you with the graphics issue. You'll need to set it to play in a window if you want to alt tab.. you can't alt tab out of full screen or you will be kicked back to playonline.
note: you can't change any config options while logged into the game or playonline.
You can play most the entire game mainly from the PC's Number keypad (And I'm talking almost every key on the numpad) add the mouse and the occasional escape key for canceling menus. @Raystantz ... Excellent recruitment drive you have going on here. I too have been wanting to check out FFXI again. Played back at release and was rather enjoying myself till WoW released and all my friends urged me to go there(Much to my dissapointment WoW was great at release but I have grown to hate it of late. EDIT~ After reading this thread I have to say you Ray have excellent people skills in handling ..shall we say .....difficult situations. More qualities for an excellent game leader. You guys are gonna have so much fun on Titan... look me up!

Hmm, guess you're insulting me? Maybe you should work on your reading comprehension. And i was reimbursed for my purchase by Steam. Thankyou very much.
Yeeeeeeeesh. You just need to... I dunno. Chill out. Stop looking for a so-called 'mature' and 'adult' game. You're not going to find one for just that. Children and adults play all kinds of games; I've know 16 year olds and younger capable of installing, configuring AND playing this game to a much greater degree then I was ever able to.
Listen, it was clearly an insult. No big deal. I have found 2 games to play with great communities. I'm enjoying those games very much, and I'm sure players are enjoying Final Fantasy. The issue I had, if anyone here actually attempted to read the previous posts, was primarily with customer service. I complained about the set up, and yes, it was entirely over the top. That's not an insult to the game. In fact, I even remarked on my own computer illiteracy. My primary issue was with the customer support.
Some of you people need to stop assuming every remark that isn't praise is an insult to your game. That's just weird, and not cool. I've heard wonderful things about this game, and I believe those people. I wish the people here luck, but I would like to ask for the assumptions to stop, and for some understanding for those of us new to the genre, or not as computer capable. Since I started this thread, I think I'll give the answer to the original question . . . No, it is definitelly not a kids game. Geez.
I agree, so why do you keep posting things that make people want to reply? Ray has been going out of his way to try to help you and all you do is act like he is wronging you in some way. Take your own advice, if you don't like the game and you don't want to play it then don't, and if you don't want to talk about it any more then don't.
Edit: From your tone you are getting the responses that you have asked for IMO.
Got his five dollars worth of complaining he sure did.
And if its worth anything, a game doesn't have to be full of bloody spikes and biceps to be mature. Don't blame the cutesy three foot tall race and the consolized login interface from 2003 that at most takes fifteen seconds away from the game a session.
This game essentially requires an encyclopedic knowledge of every mechanic to achieve any recognizable success with the players being serious to the point of universal elitism. And thats after S-E made leveling fifteen times less stressful.
Wow, sooooo glad i did not play this game. What a lousy community, if this thread has been any indication. Can you people even read? Or do you just look up from your computers and mountain dew once in a while to see red, wet yourselves, and preach hellfire? Grow up. I was nice about this. Couldn't have been more clear. This is a lousy community, and I'm thankful I'm not part of it. Take care. Make sure to touch each other in all the right places.

I was feeling sorry for you that people were skipping reading the thread and mostly responding to your title heading, but...
... with an attitude like that, I guess I don't really feel sorry for you anymore. There's some perfectly nice people in the community, and even if people are being rude to you, you can just take the higher ground and ignore them.

You're right, although I couldn't have been more nice in my previous posts. It is frustrating when people reply on these threads without first reading the content. But you made a great point in another thread about titles. I will work on more unassuming titles so my intentions are not misread as arguing, whining, or complaining. I'm not going to edit my rude post, because it was an honest, real reaction to some unfair, out of context replies. But I will apologize for the rudeness, and for insulting the community of this game; i never even played the game as stated many times before. I shoudln't judge an enitre gaming community based on some lazy, antagonizing posts by people who haven't fully read the material first. And I don't think that Ray Stantz guy was at all insulting me purposely. He was assuming too much, and a bit condescending, but otherwise seems a good guy who offered legitimate help.

I thought this thread was done like a week ago lol.
I'm not mad at anyone, nor felt like I was rude to anyone. I was trying to help as best I knew to do under the circumstances. I just felt like if you had took a bit more time to let me or someone else show you the "ropes", you wouldn't have come to the conclusion that you did. I just thought you were a bit hasty on the "I've had it with this" response, before really ever even getting to the game itself. But Like I said, its obviously not for you and I don't fault you for feeling that way, and again hope you find what your looking for elsewhere.

I wish the people here luck, but I would like to ask for the assumptions to stop, and for some understanding for those of us new to the genre, or not as computer capable. Since I started this thread, I think I'll give the answer to the original question . . . No, it is definitelly not a kids game. Geez.
Bought this game off Steam, is this a kid's game?
if kid is smart then yes.
Generation P
Be nicer!
