I think they picked the wrong lead designer for SWG in the first place.  Raph Koster did a great job as part of the UO team but his emphasis on crafting, economy and player-built communities didn't mesh well with Star Wars.

Nobody in their right mind dreams of one day being the guy who sat around building houses and ships or playing music in the canteena while AFK.  Nobody blamed Luke Skywalker for wanting to get off that damn farm.  Players want to be the hero and recreate the excitement of the Star Wars movies.

Maybe it would have turned out better if they'd started out with making a solid action RPG and then added depth with tradeskills and more traditional RPG/MMO elements.

If you can handle the slowness of the dev team then its an extremely good game. However a bug can lay in the game for years without them getting around to it. Nothing serious mind you, but they have a habit of not bothering to clean and tidy up the game after big updates and patches for awhile.

The game stole my heart from EQ 2 at the moment. I honestly don't want to play anything other then SWG at the moment. Probably because I have played fantasy games since UO was released with the exception of a very short and painful life in Anarchy Online that ended about week after it was released for me.

If you are a fan you are gonna LOVE some parts and hate others probably depending on how much you care about the actual happenings of the timeline. With the 3 prequels out they did a real good job at bluring the timelines of when SWG is supposed to be taking place at alot of spots.

I felt alittle out of place when I first started with it, I became a terras kasi artist which is a martial artist and even though I was having alot of fun I didn't quite feel the star wars setting yet. However I am now a carbineer so I get to use weapons like the stormtrooper carbine and I feel it alot more. I also just finished the Imperial Theme Park which helped ALOT even though they didn't try real hard propwise to make the missions very beleivable. All your mission objectives seemed to just be hanging around in the forest sorrouding the emporers retreat instead of actually taking you all over the galactic map. The game can sometimes take alot of imagination but it also empowers the player community way more then any other game to build roleplay events of any scale.

Mechanically the game has its strong points and weaknesses like any other. The largest weakness being one of the most sluggish and indecisive (on rivaled by Turbine in how many times they can change their mind on something) dev teams I have ever encountered in 7 years of MMO gaming.

If you are a star wars fan and want to play it for that effect I would say play the game or look into it, it would be very worth it for you. However if you are an EQ 1 style player where the numbers are what matters the most I would say try another game before this one.

Na, for real immersion maybe we should have them dancing around us in mid-combat. I can see it now, a wookiee busting out a musical instrument and saying "let me play you guys alittle something to motivate you while we got shot!". We can use them as a diversion in PvP, thats it!

I have been playing SWG since day 1 it went live almost two years ago. In terms of depth, graphics and recreation of the Star Wars background, SWG is simply unrivaled. It is the most complex and interesting mmorpg I ever played (I tried them all). There is so many things to do in this game (both on 10 planets and on vast space) it is mind boggling! The game is very detailed and if you are Star wars fan you will love the environment.

Devs made some strategic mistakes when the game was released. They tried to make it too different, which caused it to become too easy for hard core player and this resulted in loss of interest from some. They also made the path to become a Jedi horribly boring (this was last year).

Over the course of last year Devs have been fixing these mistakes and the game is now much much better. For example, Jedi path is more interesting now involving various quests. The combat update also made the game more interesting to play (harder but strategically interesting). However, when you make such drastic changes to the game people who have accumulated tons of wealth in the old system suddenly find themselves not worth as much and also they have to change their playing style sometimes completely. This is the reason why so much hatred has poured into SWG.

Still few things like improving entertainers, smugglers and some crafters are needed but Devs are working on those. The Devs are working hard to improve it all the time, for example just this week they will introduce multi-passenger vehicles. As a new player you will have a blast playing this game. As a star wars fan it has my unconditional recommendation.

Play WoW if you want to be hero. SWG rox cuz of player based economy. No other game has better economy. Crafting is fun, making uber armours and wapons, cloths and drinks. I like it. And lots of other ppl too.

And if you want to be "hero" you can go for Jedi or BH or whatever and just fight withour crafting.

SWG rox. And it's ok to dream to be best armoursmtih in whole galaxy, having your own shop and making big mony.

I sold my SWG 2 years ago cuz I had shit comp. 30 min ago I preorderd this total exp. SWG. Can't wate.

Cya & may the froce be with you.

Every time I read your post, I die a little inside...

If you are really an obsessed star wars fan (like meimage) You wouldn't want to stop playing SWG as soon as you have started. It has an enormous amount off proffesions and it is a star wars enviroment you have never seen before. As a star wars fan i would say it is the ultimate game you could play.

When i was doing my trial i had some fun shooting at stormtroopers with a rebel soldier by my side. I managed to get the Alliance hero award and i worked for Antillesimage. I had my own speederbike and killed several star wars aliens. I encountered an AT-ST an Yavin and i visited several well know star wars location (they should really improve these)

And eventhough im already thrilled from what I've seen I've just scratched the surface. Therefore I'm planning on buying SWG as soon as i can afford these darn monthly paymentsimage. But believe me a real star wars fan needs SWG. It is the best PC game released by star wars and i should know I've got them allimage.

But even if you aren't a star wars fan you can have great fun creating your own fireworks and making some friends. SWG is a great game even without the expansion packs. I wonder what i would be like to have an expansion pack. You should ask that to someone else.

However don't expect to see too much imperial vs rebel action or that you encounter large amounts of jedi's. I've encountered one small imperial vs rebel action and 1 jedi (at a starport). There is no problem playing as a overt rebel in an imperial city. Most people won't blast you (fortunatly). I managed to have quite a good time as a rebel among imperials. I've only been killed onceimage

If you decide to buy SWG I've got only one thing to say 'Have fun'image

A helpfull tip: Do not go to yavin without enough money to make a return trip. I got stuck there for 3 hours after that the admin noticed i guess, since he gave me 10000 which was enough for the return trip plus some money leftimage.

By the way if you are really an obsessed star wars fan you should try Star Wars Combine. It is a free webbased MMORPG. You need payed email to create an account since they do not want people to create multiple accounts. Check www.swcombine.com for more information. If you join please make sure you say that Ace Fode recommended it

And if you want some more star wars movies Star Wars Revelation is a good movie (not great) which is available at www.xfire.com. And the best Star Wars movie so far would probably be A Great and Majestic Empire (A GaME) which is available at www.ukmercs.co.uk. I myself am currently working an a total version of A GaME and i expect it will be released somewhere in July. For now the movie is divided in to 23 episodes (episode 23 is coming out soon).

    I like SWG because of

    a) the community

    b) freedom of choice (many professions, which I can changed over time, many different play styles supported, incredible customization possible for anything from your toon to your house or ship or clothing etc.)

    c) the community

    d) one of the best crafting systems in any MMORPGs

    e) oh, community

    f) twitch based space game with dozens of ships

    g) you know what ....

    h) full player driven economy

    i) do i have to say it ?

    j) excellent grafics and music

    k) Star warsyness

    l) lots of tools to create very nice player events

    ...

and yes, very nice people can be met in game :-)

What you will HATE with a vengeance are bugs, imbalances and a crude communication skills

SOE-->players. You can play around the bugs and do A TON of other things, but its annoying.

So ... in total .. its a GREAT game that STILL has not reached its full potential.

    have fun
