Excellent condition ASUS G73JH-X3 for $800 - good deal?

jpnolejpnole Member UncommonPosts: 1,698

Just picked up a few month old ASUS G73JH-X3 off of Craigslist for $800. Still under warranty and appears to be in excellent condition. Did I get a good deal? Seller said he was more of a desktop gamer and had little use for it after building a new rig. Tiger Direct is selling it here for $1350 plus tax

I was actually going to check on a concrete service for my patio renovation and my Craigslist bookmark that I had saved several months ago was for a keyword search of "gaming laptop". As soon as I saw the ad had just been posted I called and drove straight over. I am not normally an impulse buyer but I have been wanting a laptop for downtime at work and it looked too good to pass up. He was asking $800 but wouldn't take any less. I didn't hesitate to give him full asking price!

    @JP,

    I have the -BST... picked it up on sale for like 1000 or so on Best Buy.  The difference between yours and mine is yours has some nice bells and whistles like bluetooth connections.

    Depends if he takes good care of his stuff.  Mine gets wiped down regularly as the matte black tends to get oily looking and/or collect noticable dust.  As a laptop, I like it.  Check to see if he did the Bios stuff.  There are a couple of known issues out there with certain Bios revisions having blank screen issues but that's easily fixable.

    The thing overall is pretty darned quiet.  You may want to invest in a SSD for the other bay in the thing.  It has GREATLY sped up things.  I have a 60 Gb SSD in there with windows and some of my more demanding games while the spin up that comes with it is for bulk storage.

    EDIT:  Does yours also only do 780p?  I miss my 1080i Gateway but the graphics are WAY better (if just less sharp).

    Yeah the seller was in the computer field. He had a 3 monitor dual 570 setup on his desktop so I guess he takes care of his stuff! There's always a risk when buying any used electronics but I figured what the heck. Good as new for $800 and I don't have to pay tax. I will look into the bios thing, but it is running great right now.

    Oh and yeah it's a 1080P (with no dead pixels) - just like the specs in the link in the OP.

    If you wanted a gaming laptop, don't need much battery life, and the condition it is in is essentially as good as new, then yes, you got a great deal.  The processor is slow enough that some games won't be perfectly smooth, but everything on the market should be playable at moderate to high settings.  You should reasonably be able to max settings in some games and not others.

    The big gotcha, though, is the condition it's in.  If the reason he wanted to get rid of it is that it was having hardware problems, then $800 for a laptop that will be dead pretty soon is not such a good deal.  One reason for a discount on used parts is that you take the risk that it's not in as good of condition as you hope.

    I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it, apart from the problems intrinsic to gaming laptops in general.  It's likely that you did get a good deal.  But do be careful about it overheating, and don't get ideas about actually setting the laptop on your lap.
