Sorry if this is not your cup of tea. Find another game to play and complain about. I still think this game will work without the DFO and MO crowd. They are ones with the biggest complaints. I like it the way it is. I pay for games that fit my playstyle. When a game stops providing that it is time to move on. Some of the games I play are liner themeparks and some are sandboxes. I quit DFO and MO as there was nothing to do but PVP. It gets boring quickly. One large and endless deathmatch arena. Log on - PVP and then log off. No depth.
The game in Xsyon has more depth then either of these games. That is good enough for me and the game will continue to grow. I will wait to see what evolves. You should move on.
Ahh so a FFA full loot pvp game focusing on tribal warfare and reource control isnt about pvp. That was my mistake on that one.
...
No, your mistake is that you think about Xsyon as a "FFA full loot pvp game focusing on tribal warfare and resource control".
It isn't.
Right, it certainly was a mistake.
Xyson is a real life sim game, with terrain modification. Currently all crafted structures are pointless, for close to a year, and even then, why build defensive structures when you can just turn pvp off?
I just hope people learn from this, Xyson is not for pvpers.
Sorry, I do not agree with your opinion. I think the developer has got it right. The sandbox is his and so are the rules. If you cannot live by them then find another game to play. You will grief and get banned if you impede the playstyle of others. If you want to define the game differently than Jooki then you are going to lose.
The game is not about PVP and never will be. You can PVP and it will be restrictive. I played both DFO and MO. I hope it never gets to that point where PVP is central to the game. If the resource is so important to you to protect then be prepared to be banned then this is the wrong game for you. I and many others will not lose any sleep.
If the PVP crowd takes over and as usual starts to exploit the game then I hope the dev brings down the hammer and bans quickly and if needed massively. Griefing, camping and ganking should form a very small part of the game that is monitored closely and controlled. That is my opinion about PVP in this game. I like it the way it is.
Ugh, another blind fandog. The sandbox is his, but he has to be careful with the rules he imposes. If the game isn't PvP friendly, he loses that whole crowd of potential players. Basically, this game is a crafting sandbox.. which isn't that interesting after a few months.
Personally, I love PvP (currently playing Guild Wars and waiting for Guild Wars 2). I really love RvR (I played a DAoC clone called Regnum Online for a long time), so I'm a big fan of games where territory is controlled through PvP. I also follow sandbox games with interest (and a critical eye).
However, life is too short to play games that make ganking/griefing possible; and FFA looting is almost inseperable from this.
If, as has been stated above, the developer goal is 80% PvE, 20% PvP, then that is definitely a game I would be interested in. The PvP becomes more a a role-play element, which after all, is a big part of what sandboxes were in the first place.
Never criticize a "sandbox" game on mmorpg.com. You will be drowned in a wave of kool-aid drinking fanbois.
I have the perfect solution. Sense age, food, thirst, energy all play important roles in the game why not add a death penalty so when your protecting your junk pile some idiot doesnt let them kill you 20 times. poof problem solved
Please let us know who you are in game when it launches ...please, please, please, PLLLLLEEEEAAAASE. So they can camp you and see how long they take to ban them. I thinks they will only see the $$ they are losing when they start thier hammers and quickly stop. Right now I think they are only saying what all you carebears wanna hear so you buy the game or pre order or whatever you want to call it just so long as they get the numbers at launch.
How many delicate flowers have you met in Counterstrike?
I got a case of beer and a chainsaw waiting for me at home after work.
End game (tribal warfare) was announced today as "consensual". What that pretty much translates into is "not used". it was a dagger into the heart for all of us hoping for a good pvp centric sandbox driven mmorpg.
Those of us who have been preparing for war over the last 3 weeks, now find ourselves preparing for the Sims Online with terraforming....
The only saving grace in all of this clusterfuct is a reponse back from Xsyon (lead guy in charge of the game) on a possible "Chaos Server", which is a server with no safe zones and no consensual group pvp (a true FFA PvP model).
I will keep you guys posted on what he says. Hopefully he will come thru, if not he just divided his playerbase and drove his product into the ground...

See that makes sense. I argued that about Earthrise. Have a RP server with some PVP (or none) and a PVP server with no rules.

As the above poster said, many of the crafting elements in the game are useless without PvP. Why build defenses, walls, armor, weapons if all you have to do is turn pvp off to keep yourself completely out of that aspect of the game.

But FFA isn't the only way to give meaning to crafting through PvP. Realm vs. Realm games do this without any looting or griefing at all.
Xsyon's territory control system looks like it could be easily extended in the RvR direction rather than the FFA direction.
And, if posters on mmorg.com are any indication, far more people are interested in DAoC-style mechanics than Darkfall. (Not to slag Darkfall, to each their own).
Never criticize a "sandbox" game on mmorpg.com. You will be drowned in a wave of kool-aid drinking fanbois.
Casual PvPers - Bring the FPS concept of no risk vs. little reward (no loot, no penalties, etc.) , instant action Player vs. Player content.
Hardcore PvPers - Lose all your items and maybe even some stats/skills but also be able to gain items from other player's dead bodies.
Griefers - Want the no holds barred, gank every newbie in sight style FFA PvP so they can feel big and powerful.
Challengers - Want FFA PvP, drawn out "sandboxy" action to get the adreneline rush on occasion.
PvEers - Want nothing to do with PvP and think all PvP players are kids having a dick-waving contest.
RvRers - Want a cross between "casual PvP" and PvE where battles are predetermined (You know who an enemy is and what you'll be fighting, as with PvE) and personal risk is low.
PvP crafters - Make the latest and greatest armor and weapons to kill people with - more dead people equal more repeat customers.
PvE crafters - Make the latest and greatest items since people will eventually get bored with their current set.
Personally, I'd rather see what happens when the game comes out and progresses.
As for the OP's original concern, I would say it depends highly on the current and future game mechanics that are/will be in place.
I plan on purchasing this game later this week, out of curiosity. One thing that's still fuzzy to me is whether or not there are clear cut, in game methods of officially claiming an area. If there is, then in response to the OP, was this junk pile actually claimed using the in-game methods available, or was it essentially a "neutral" area that you decided to guard on your own?
If there is a way of claiming things in-game, like building a structure or placing a marker that warns others, then I see no wrong in killing anyone who comes along to "steal" it. I'd also be concerned if this was the case and they held up the 20 times in an hour rule.
On the other hand, if there was a method to "claim" an area but you decided to circumvent that by simply camping the junk pile and killing anyone who came by despite not having an "official" in-game claim to it when there was a way to do so, then I would have to side with the devs on their 20 kiils/hour rule.
That latter scenerio reminds me of issues I have with games like Travian and Tribal Wars. The game allows for "Alliances" between player cities. Some obsessive players circuvent that mechanic, however, by grouping with 3 or 4 people to all control one account/city. This can easily dwarf other single players and can even strangle out Alliances by indivdual players trying to play the game with the tools they were given. And everyone does it simply because there's nothing saying they can't.
I'd be happy to see a developer care enough about their game to patrol it for imbalances such as this for a change and I would also be willing to keep paying for the game if that's the kind of devotion they had for it. Eventually the problems will work themselves out. If they make enough decisions people disagree with though, they'll lose customers and even though I also want to like the game, I've been burned so often in the past I would drop it like a bad habit if I saw the writing on the wall.

Whats next? linear quest lines?
I know this is an old argument but FFA full loot and PvP are features of this game. . not the main focus. Building is a feature and not the main focus. . crafting is a feature and not the main focus. . .together these things combined make up the game. UO had no building other than pregenerated housing. Darkfall has no building other than preselected areas with pre-designed structures. Mortal online. . same thing. This game is going to attract people who want to build and live in a "virtual world" Also. . . about 90% of the map is going to be free for PvP. . you just can't raid people's homes without them thinking that is okay.
Here is hoping that any new "frontier" areas are not this way. I think that hard core PvPers are going to not enjoy the wait.

People will say they like to build. .and I love to do it as well. . but we all know what happens once things are build of there is no "decay" . Even builders are going to get bored. Now the plan for Xsyon might change this path though as they add more elements. The devs have said that during prelude players will find old tech and things will advance giving new recipes, skills etc.
I have not seen one game pull this off. . . I am generally for open PvP. . no safe zones and no flagging. I think it is the only way it can work. The problem here is that people are going to spend a lot of time building things that can be destroyed while they are off line.
I can only think of timers as a solution. . ie.. . declare your attach 24 hours prior or something. Gives them a chance to defend and you a chance to have your raid etc. I don't know. . has anyone done this right yet?

I could just as easily say that crafting isnt he main focus...but then thats why you play. A good portion of us are playing for the ffa pvp, in a sandbox setting with lots of sand.
These new rules are making it difficult to draw in people. Since the crafing will remaing completely useless for the better part of a year, that leaves the pvp as the glue that is holding this game together. You need us to create a need for your items that never decay.
The majority of people will take the safest and easiest route. This is why forcing people to play under the same pvp rules is important. Its like if they made a rule where some homesteads could opt to put NPC merchants in their camp, able to purchase finished good by trading resources or whatever... thus bypassing the need for your crafted items....it would wreck the game. This is what the consentual warfare and pvp is doing.
Perhaps we should push for crafting optional homsteads? Since pvp is now optional, i think its only fair for those of us not interested in crafting, after all crafting isnt the focus of this game right....

How did you get idea Xsyon is "pvp centric sandbox driven" when devs clearly said >month ago that its - not?
Mssively, posted on Jan 6th 2011 11:00AM
"Recently there seems to be a bit of a trend toward independently produced open-world games with sandbox elements and a heavy focus on PVP. What sets your game apart from titles like Darkfall or Mortal Online? Do you see PvP conflict as the driving force behind Xsyon?
What sets Xsyon apart is a focus on building and creating a new world and not relying on PvP as the driving force. The Xsyon setting is also based on reality and not a fantasy universe. This gives us the opportunity to introduce real locations and later historical lore to make Xsyon a somewhat educational experience.
Following on from that, both Darkfall and Mortal Online have attracted what many people consider to be undesirable communities (griefers, etc). Are there any mechanics in Xsyon created to keep anti-social behavior in check or is it truly up to the players and 'anything goes?'
In Xsyon, tribe zones are safe zones. While wilderness areas will be mostly anything goes, encumbrance limits will prevent extensive looting and mechanisms are in place to prevent camping spawn locations. The goal is to have open PvP in general but not cater to griefer types."
The idea of two seperate servers is a terrible idea even if the population allows for it because here is the problem. Majority of pvpers are going to go to no safe zone server, i forget what they were suggesting to call it, and then most of the crafters are going to stay to on the safe zone server. The pvpers will go at it for the 2 months of preordered free time with the currently lacking combat system meant more in my opinion for killing a bear here and there than for killing one another and when it comes time to resubscribe they arent going to see the point in continuing. Along with the crafters that have spent 2 months and have created a unique tribal area but with little or no pvp and no need for any armor, weapons, etc. to be crafted for combat there will be seemingly no point. The diversity of playing styles on one server helps to make the game interesting to the point the point of while the crafters are searching for materials they need to keep on there toes and while a death here and there for what seems to be no reason may be a little annoying it makes for a more enjoyable experience overall. In my tribe alone, over the few days of being in it i can see that some of the players are looking to ingauge in more pvp than others so gladly they will defend the crafter style players as they attempt to gather supplies to further the pvp players own equiptment. In terms of ganks on new players i have a feeling this will not occur as much as people many think because once game kicks in i have a feeling that tribes that want the game to succeed are going to defend the starting zones so that the ten or twenty tool farmers will not make the game miserable for the people just entering the game. Overall i beleive that most if not all people supporting the game want it to succeed but just have different visions for the direction that it holds. With such a diverse group of players there should be a balance. While what the OP did was some what of a blurry spot in terms of how it should be categorized as greifing or not i beleive if that guy that constantly ran in had any brains and told a couple of the other guys that were without doubt in my mind killed by OP in same general location to help him kill the OP who was not in his tribal zone from what it sounds like to join the out com would have been much different.
My belief is what the OP was doing was fine and although he didnt own the scrap pile he had as much right to protect it as the other guy had to extract resources from the ground. That being said I am more of a crafter type and while i feel this case had reason for the pvp, the other day a guy came over to my tribal area asking me how to fish and i noticed he didnt have a fishing rod so i handed him 15 fish to keep him from going hungry and whether or not at this point hunger actually affects anything i have no idea but anyways i also craft him a very basic set of armor mostly im doing this not only to be nice but also because someone is going to be adding him to the tribe within an hour or so. So i head back to the scrap piles to continue to scavenge and then i see him getting killed by some guy that has been listening in and knows that the guys a new player because i suppose foolishly we were talking in local chat. Anyways the guy that i was helping manages to respawn and then he notices all his tool are missing the guy that killed him told us that he deleted all the guys stuff and to reroll and set up a homestead and to stay in that area and never to leave or you will get killed.
See the diffrence in players while the OP had some reason to kill the guy, even though the scraps collected by that guy really wouldn't affect your tribal base that much and i woulda left him alone, and just some douche running though tribal areas anouncing hes on a rampage and cant be stopped killing people for no real reason with no gear on so that if anyone was to bother to stop em it wouldnt matter. The guy he killed afterwards asked me how to get into combat mode incase it happens again. How can you call that even pvp the guy didnt know how to fight he had been in the game for no more than 10 mins.

This was Richard Garriott's hope, as well. He freely admits that he was wrong and people simply do not behave that way, even if it is the most advantageous long-term course of action.
Belief is one thing. Belief with complete disregard for fact, history and human behavior is another.
In the past 14 years, have we seen what you describe happen in any MMO outside of short-term unsustainable but valiant failed attempts?
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein "Graphics are often supplied by Engines that (some) MMORPG's are built in" - Spuffyre

No, lol, we havent, i dont really know what is it with these people, why do they want games to make same mistake over and over and over and over again.
Going the proposed way is sure way to deep dive and cut yourself from any chance of success right from the start.

Well in a sandobx...you need to set your own goals. If my character is combat oriented (as you really cant be both a decent crafter and a great combat character) my goal was to protect the junk pile at my doorstep. No i was not using it. I was trining for the big day...if you will. Yes i could have been bribed, yes i could have been killed easily (as i had utterly failed in creating a good combat character)
I had been in the game 2 hours when this happend...total, i was just as noob as the guy i "griefed"
Also, the two servers is only needed if the developers cave in to the pve crowd. Good portion of us dont want to be hinderd by arbitrary pvp rules and pretend safe zones, we just want a full loot pvp sandbox...with more sand. No one ever said we as a crowd wouldnt be willing to join and protect pve tribes...or require pve players in our own...this isnt darkfall we need the pve crowd and they need us (unless there are safe zones then we are not needed)
Right now, you can just drop your totem over the junk pile, not need to worry about defense (you still need to keep looters away however), the worry is over tribal warfare, and if people will be granted the magical safe powers that dont fit into a game like this.
What you dont under stand is this. If the land being scavanged on is under your control yes it don't matter how many times you kill them cause its your tribal land altho if you step out of the boundry and kill them then yes over time it can be considered griefing. If there dum enough to keep coming back to get killed then it's there fault they can't report you for griefing. All guide will do is check logs and see he was killed every time on tribal load. Thus he will contact that player who reported you and disscuss with them that he can't send in false reports and he will be warned for false statements. Ima gonna agree with this right here. Snail dude, I understand your concern and all, but I just think your wrong and the devs and guides are right. The ONLY thing you and your tribe mates have full control over is whats on your tribal lands. Once you walk off those lands you are under world rule. You and your tribe may THINK you have the right to exert control over others (ie control a public scrap pile) but thats just you forcing that on everyone else by killing them. You have no god given right to that pile any more than anyone else does. If you and your tribe decide to take it over and try and force control over everyone else, then thats fine. But if your method of control is KOS to anyone who gets close, and you do that over and over, then your method of control is in fact griefing.
There is no difference between KOS control of a scrap pile and KOS control of an enemy by camping his borders. The only difference is what your controlling. Both are griefing if you abuse it. And that is what the devs and guides were trying to explain to you.
Look, here is the only way you can control that independant public scrap pile legally. Branch one or two off from your tribe as designated scrappers. Have them build homesteads on the pile, make them friends to your main tribe, protect them, and have them pick the pile and deliver the goods to your main tribal lands. Once they have cleaned the pile, they can rejoin your main tribe or move thier homesteads to other close by scrap piles. This is legal, this maintains zone of control, this is homestead/tribal land defense. Its not public resource camping and griefing like you want to do.

Right, it certainly was a mistake.
Xyson is a real life sim game, with terrain modification. Currently all crafted structures are pointless, for close to a year, and even then, why build defensive structures when you can just turn pvp off?
I just hope people learn from this, Xyson is not for pvpers.

He who keeps his cool best wins.
Wow so far on this thread alone, we have the:
So as I mentioned before, let's see what happens.
Wa min God! Se æx on min heafod is!
Wa min God! Se æx on min heafod is!
Since pvp is now optional, i think its only fair for those of us not interested in crafting, after all crafting isnt the focus of this game right....
see what i did there?
Worng.
Xsyon is not for gankers/griefers. Not all PvPers are gankers and griefers.
