I think they'd be less of a minority if a sandbox came out where long-term playing didn't allow you to mess with the progression of new players.

I know, I know, people say in Eve you can kill a fleet with your starter ship or something but I don't believe that is true.

There can be advantages, but when older players can interfere or basically totally prevent progression by new players, it'll always be a niche thing.

Mabye this Xsyon will be just the ticket since there's less focus on combat.  Time will tell but based on what I've seen I wouldn't wager on it.

Yes this "magical sandbox game" we can dream up will probably outsell everything ever made. Same with the themepark MMO I have in my head right now. Lets not speak in hypertheticals shall we?.

Xyson, while a great concept and a lot to build on later, isn't ready for release on March 1st. It will be buggy as heck and problematic.

Rift by comparision will be out of the box ready to launch with little or no bugs (heck, it could launch now and be more ready than games already out) and a ton of people to play with.

Not even close. Rift on March 1st.

Now one year from now, ask me which I think will be better overall after both games have been out. It might be much closer which deciding then.

The thing is, what I describe has been done basically, and to great sucess, a couple times- The Sims and Second Life.

Put that in a fantasy setting and add combat that wasn't completely debilitating, and you'd have a huge game.

This is what i have done as well. I will play RIFT for my themepark fix in a game that does"been there , done that" better than any release since WOW. I imagine most of my time, at first , will go into XSYON. Once all the wipes are out of the way.

SIDE NOTE: Hey Circaen..I'm playin Ustaph in XSYON. We met in game for like a few hours..had a 2 person tribe set up...then next time I signed in they had done a pre-wipe Wipe. Which ..as it turns out was more of a pre-pre-pre-wipe wipe . lol

Rift. I've seen what happens when a MMO company that doesn't have the funds to do sandbox well makes the attempt. WHen a company, like Trion for instance, comes along and makes an attempt at a sandbox, and puts the amount of money and polish into it as they have done with Rfit, then i'll give that game a go.

You guys are seriously arguing that apples are better than oranges (which they are).  It's all perception.  You feel Rift does nothing new aka WoW and such.  The people playing it see Rift invasions as fun and new.  Other people see Xsyon as fresh- other people see it as TOD with nuances of fallen earth.  (which is probably wrong to fans)

The problem here is that since UO and EQ MMO's have branched off into two different types of gamers: those that like controlled entertainment and those that like absolute independence.  Issues arise not from horrible games, but by the industry catoring to one group over the other.  Rift players have seen a large majority of games "trying" to cator to them, while the indies haven't.  It's not that Rift is awful.  It's that rift represents everything they dislike about the industry, thus they will never see the fan's point of view because it is a much larger problem.  And the Rift crowd, well, they just don't want to invest in an idea so many others are desperate for.  Pretty interesting.

I for one purchased Rift.  I had fun, loved gloomwood, invasions, and met some rather nice people on the RP server.  That's what is most important, right?  Having fun?  Not whether someone elses idea of fun is the same as yours
