I've had the CE preordered since December. I really hope I can pick up my headstart key tomorrow. Otherwise, it will be the last time I do business with the store. I like to have the physical box, but every time these PC games come out Gamestop seems to not give a flying hoot. I remember Gamestop used to rock....what happened?
Anyway, just thought I'd share and see if anyone else also preordered from a physical location and what they are doing to get into headstart.

Play N Trade is better. (:
The code should auto print on the receipt. If the guys behind the counter dont have a clue, try having them cancel and reorder the game on the same transaction. Should print you out a new code.
Thats how I got mine.
I don't recall Gamestop EVER rocking. I do remember consistently using Electronics Botique for all my PC needs. Then they changed that to EBGames and that worked. Bought MANY generations of games through them. Since Gamestop bought them out and folded them all under one name.... it just hasn't been the same. Heck, they don't even have a shelf for the PC games anymore. It started with a whole wall, then just a column or two, then 2 sides of those middle carts, then 1 side, then just the end cap. No thanks. I am a WELL ROUNDED gamer. I play everything. If they want to ignore one section (I think particularly because they can't resell it but that's just MY opinion), then fine. Best Buy has been rockin' lately with ALL my preorder items. I pick it up IN STORE the DAY it comes out with no issues. Walk up to the counter, they hand me my game, I walk out. Easy peezy.
Gamestop employee here, if the code was offered back when you pre-ordered it, it would be printed on the reciept.
If you lost the reciept and you haven't paid in full yet, try adding money to it and see if it prints the code on the reciept for the extra payment.
If you payed in full, you can try and cancel and re-order the CE edition and get the code on the recipet.
If the CE's reserves are shut off (usually when the shipment is already ready to be shipped to the store and they can't add more) try pre-ordering a normal copy and using that code and register your CE when you get it. Then switch the reserve to something else or get your money back for the extra copy. A warning though, I do not know if there will be problems using the headstart code printed from a normal reserve with a CE edition. I didn't pay attention if you get all the CE stuff in headstart or not.
Good luck.
Well when I preordered, the keys weren't out yet. HOwever, I still have about $30 bucks left to pay on it which was what I planned to do tomorrow in hopes that they would give me my key because I pay it in full. Hopefully it won't be an issue, but I have had issues in the past few years where Gamestop employees are completely clueless about preorder keys. It usually works out, but just barely. They do at least have the game at the store on launch day for all games they sell. I remember that being worse but I suppose UPS has gotten better at shipping, lol.
Just read on Headstart FAQ
"If you pre-ordered RIFT through a retailer and did not receive a pre-order code, please email Trion Customer Support with proof of purchase attached to the email and we will grant your account pre-order access."

Most games nowadays (especially MMO's) have street dated releases where the game gets shipped early to make sure the product is available. Gotta get them sales right?
Call gamestop.
When I preordered the key on the recipt didnt work. When I called they looked up my order and read me off a new code (she said it would be a waste for me to drive up there to get it) and I was all set.
There are 3 types of people in the world.
1.) Those who make things happen
2.) Those who watch things happen
3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"
It's 5 minutes away for me, so no biggie, plus I get to pay it off in full anyway. If I don't get the key on that trip then I'll call when I get home.
So to tie up this loose end here, I made the trip. Paid the game off. Picked up my receipt which has the Headstart code on it. It blew away the Store manager as she had no idea that Gamestop is now putting keys on the receipt. Nice girl, but just another example of Gamestop employees being "console babies" and having no clue about PC games. She didn't even know what game I was referring to when I said Rift. I find this sad, but none the less, mission accomplished.
Congrats! Glad everything went smoothly.
My problem with Gamestop (other than leaning to console games) is that when I ask about a game... I don't care if it's Micky Mousecapades (anyone remember THAT game?) ... I think that the employee's should KNOW about it. When I go in and ask an employee about say... Two Worlds II... you should at least KNOW about the game.. there's a freakin commercial playing behind them and they are CLUELESS. This isn't just a one time thing. I ask about standard BIG NAME games and they stare at me.. then they go "Oh, I don't own that console" etc. I may not play all games... and I do have preferences... but I make it my business to know the new/upcoming stuff in my hobby.
GS emp here. All employees SHOULD know OF a game that is coming out soon, what exactly the title is ABOUT is kind of sketchy. It is hard to know about alot of games when we usually get more than one release every Tuesday. If we are to learn what all is offered in a game (preview stuff) we need to do it on our own time unless it is that "Next Cow a Duty".
Being a Gamestop employee is not all sunshine and rainbows (most of the time). It is always nice to deal with an actual gamer and talk about the new cool stuff coming our for consoles and PC; however, most customers are mom's who come in asking for "That new wii game" or "That new shooting game that just came out" or even "My child is 7 and I was wondering if this (insert random title) DS game would be good for them?". Dad's just watching the kids run around in the store, or dropping their kids off to play the interactives while they get a haircut next door.
It really sucks the caring out of someone about keeping up to tabs with new titles coming out because of this. The big takeaway from this is that by becoming a Gamestop employee takes a Hobby and turns it into a Job, that can become a different beast for some people.
In order to keep on topic abit, I'll keep tabs on this thread for pre-order questions.
Electronics Boutique used to rock....Gamestop has always sucked.
Glad things worked out.
As far as GS, can't help but blame their corporate. You would think there would be a system in place where the managers would receive a list of games coming out soon, with basic information next to each one and the expectation that they would then make sure that all employees get and learn that information. Maybe they do and the managers are just lazy. Back when video rental stores were a thriving business, most made sure their employees knew which new rentals were arriving each week. Heck, many of the employees probably took it upon themselves to make sure they knew them all on their own, if need be.
Maybe it's just that movie geeks like to know everything about movies, but gaming geeks really only care about the games they are playing? (Sorry, I know, generalizing).

Our reserve system has 99% of game titles and their release dates (with are always subject to change). Our monthly planners and daily e-mails tell us what five "mainstream" titles we are supposed to advertise for. Otherwise we are left to our own inquisitive nature and gamer background in titles for information. Depending on the interests and background of the store employees, your personal game preferances, and the systems both parties play and/or not play will determine how good/poor your experiance with the store is.
