After being a hunter in wow over 5 years i can ensure you one thing. Ppl wont like being guided to get raptors or boars. ppl prefer freedom concerning choosing their pets. For rangers-hunters choosing a pet as companion ina game is big thing. their pet becomes a part fo them something that escorts him in the game's course in hsi adventures ..ppl live their pets. So there should be a choise from the player's side to choose whatever pet they like to tame. And not being forced as rangers for example to get their 51 th soul to call a raptor . Ppl should choose their pets as they want from the world and tame them..a lion a tiger, a wolf,a snake,a raptor a boar an eagle..whatever they like.
In wow they screwed up lots of things but concerning hunter's pets they gace variety and i give that to them. I disagreed ofc that they balanced all pets(i remmber i spended 2 days under a tree in barrens waiting the black lion to spawn with lots of hordes passing by often hunting me down on sight) :P those were lovely times ;P ;P

Have to admit I did like trying to track down unique pets.
As a WoW Hunter with quite a few rares (including a dragonhawk I ran naked into BE territory on a PvP server so I could have it at lvl 15) I understand your thoughts but this is NOT that kind of game. The moment they start adding stuff like this I will jump ship. If I wanted another WoW, I would just go re-sub.
Yeah, I don't know why they didn't implement tameable animals right away and it should be definitely added later on.
While I could live without it, that was the first thing my girlfriend complained about, when she tried RIFT.
Maybe they didn't want to mimic WoW in this aspect, but they really should have. Besides the fun of tracking down rare pets, having tameable pets adds a nice level of individuality to all hunters. I was surprised, that the community didn't demand this feature more directly, but I think there will be some discussion about that soon and I really expect Trion to include this feature later on.
I never considered taming pets, but now if you think about it, even in GW you can tame the pet of your choice. Kinda disappointed now because I do see many running around wtih the same pets constantly.
i for one am extremely happy i dont have to tame and train stupid pets to do stupid tricks. they give you 3 pets, 1 tank, 1 dps, and im not sure what the 51 point blood raptor does. they serve their function and at lvl 23 you get a better dps pet with aoe debuff, at 24 you get a better tank pet with an AoE taunt. very very simple, i like simple. i follow the K.I.S.S. rule.
i wont jump ship if they change the pets, but i will complain on the forums to the devs. i want game experience not boring chase pet, tame pet, train pet. to get what is all ready handed to you in game.
Ultimately, tameable pets are just flavor.
WoW pets went through so much development. They used to level slowly, they used to be very different with hidden stats, then they became generic reskins, then they got their own talent trees, there was limited storage for database concerns, dunno what they are like today, do you still have to feed them or they stop levelling and finally run away?
But yes, it is strange, WoW era games did indeed have tameble pets and we did not even blink, yet it is something special today. I blame themepark tendecies.
yeah i liked this idea. If they wont allow you to tame your own they should at least make is so you can change the model or soemthing. I dont liek that if i want to play a pet centric shaman i have to choose a fairy and making a reaver pet centric should not have a purple cat.
Agreed. I like the pet system in Rift- SIMPLE. To me a pet system is not a game, a feature true. It would become a game should rares be extremely hard to get and pwn, but that would bring up a whole new argument around certain players not being able to experience all of the content...blah, blah, blah. I have a cat and two dogs in RL, tamed these from the wilds in a zone called the pound. Don't need to be feeding any other animals, virtual or not.
Yah curse immersion....
This was one of the main reasons I couldn't touch the game. Every single hunter everywhere will have the same pet. Not to mention the models for the same pets are absolutely horrendous.
Since I can't feed it, pet it, train it or do anything i would otherwise do with a pet in a fantasy world - and that includes trying to keep it alive in a hostile environment - I'm more than fine with it being an uncustomizable aggro-management and DoT tool. IMO, UO had pets. Everything else has been a cheap Pokemon knock-off.

There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein

before you know it, these kids ask for pokemon balls....
It needs alot more then that.
"We are not in Azeroth anymore..."
Yeah I wish that you could tame a pet, it just makes more sense to me. I mean I don't want all classes to have tamable pets, but if the Beastmaster or Ranger did, I would be extremely happy
-I want a Platformer MMO
Wow itself copied elements from other games and further improved them. its not bad to take the good elements of a game and improve them. What makes Rift diferrent is the world design ,the Rifts and unique class chosies system.
If u compare wow's pet system with Rift's ..well Rift's sucks. And i dont understand when we are talking about pets u could tame what u mean with: THIS IS NOT THAT KIND OF GAME. U r on drugs or something?
I dont understand why give players freedom on taming pets onstead of having 2-3 pets guided from devs ,would make some ppl to jump ship or quit playing Rift? I mean wtf some ppl have so much complex syndrom or soemthing ? Everything they see in a game that reminds elements that wow had makes them feel sick? That's not serious dudes..
More pets at the very least would be nice. It does get kind of lame with just 3 selectable. At least give the ability to change the asthetics of them. Armor, color scheme. Customizing these days is becoming a standard. But Hell. I'm paying $15 a month. A little more variety wouldn't hurt. Just sayin'.
Getting too old for this $&17!
Gotta agree with you. I don't care about tameble pets (it just wouldn't work with Rift's soul tree system, unless it's gated somehow) but why are there so few to choose. As a ranger I only got the Boar, Wolf & Raptor and I only used the Boar, since the other 2 are usless for solo grinding and the DPS they provided is quite insignificant. Making them not all that good for dungeons, especially the ones where bosses will oneshot melee characters. It's also a shame that the only thing you can customize on your pet is their name. Really wish I could customize their appearance and maybe a soul tree for my pet (linked to my level).
Well all those that want a robust pet system, then rejoice because the upcoming Guild Wars 2 will provide just that with it's Ranger profession. 12 species available & each player has a choice of a starter pet dependant on race (Human, Norn, etc.) and the rest are tameble. Each species comes in multiple different variations (Brown Bear, Black Bear, Polar Bear). Pets will level with the character but they have their own evolution level. The more you play with a pet, the higher the evolution, the higher the evolution, the more skills it can use. Each pet species has a pool or a dozen or so skills to choose from, 4 of which can be slotted for the pets use (depending on the evolution level).
So as you can see, if you're disatisfied with the pet mechanic of this game then at least there are future MMOs to look forward to. Even SW:TOR and it's companion system is looking pretty robust.
Have to agree there, the Boar is the 1st pet as a ranger you get and is probably the only pet you require as the direwolf that you get and then Blood Raptor (you have to spec for and is the last in the tree) are a pile of utter crap. Neither of them can hold any aggro (even after you let it fight for several seconds, go down to 50% health, all you have to do is fire 1-2 shots and aggro is all yours.
You do not have this problem with the boar. I was confused with teh write up on these as it does say they will not level up past a certain level (yet they do).
Dont really require many differant sorts of pets, but maybe one could do a quest that could change teh looks of the pets or something that you could do to make them look differant to everyone else. I think this is what your really wanting.
