Trion Worlds has announced that the pre-order head start program for Rift will commence at 10:00 a.m. PST today and that over a million accounts have been created for the game prior to the official worldwide launch on March 1, 2011.
Trion Worlds announced today that more than one million accounts have been created to date, signaling a high level of interest for the company’s first massively multiplayer online game, Rift™, which is scheduled to launch March 1st in North America, March 3rd in pan-European countries, and March 4th in the UK. The news hits just as the game’s Head Start period begins, giving pre-order customers advance playtime before servers officially open on launch day.
Launching with 33 Head Start servers, Rift will feature dedicated realms for PvP, PvE, and role-playing players

Wow. If today is any indication of how popular Rift is going to be, it could well be the first MMO that truly starts to hurt WoW's subscription numbers. Tried to log in for my head start, about 15 minutes after it began. Every single server is full. And this is just the head start, only for people who preordered the game.
Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.
Yea there are alot of servers and they all filled up quick, including the 2 new ones they just opened..
While i do hope the game does well, it offers nothing new.....
And all games have full servers at start.
Uhh... what?
Well if thats an indicator DCUO should be much more populated haha.... I waitied in ques the first few days and now
Current queue waits on all servers are between 5 and 12 hours
** Reality.sys corrupted - Unable to start Universe **
WAR had the same thing, don t get too excited. The numbers will drop in the next month and on.
I have to say, I was hoping they would fix the opening quest/area before launch. The Guardian side starter area is without a doubt the worst starting area/quest line in any "A level" MMO so far. A shame because the rest of the game is better than the starting area makes it seem.
The start is rushed, loud, frantic, crowded, and every race & class is in the same area doing the same thing. Really doesn't set a good mood of exploration and individualization for an MMO.
The number of ppl is crazy right now. Its a battle to get quest items and if you log out it takes 5+ hours to log back in.
But if you get in the game its great!
*alt-tab back to rift*

I suppose this goes to show just how long it has been since a AAA title was released - everybody is all over this like gravy.
Personally, I'm holding back for a month or maybe even two to let things settle down, I'm getting too old for all of the commotion
I got lucky and logged on to one of the new servers shortly after it got started up. Everything was full when I first tried though.
Had blast leveling today. I got to 15, when I logged out, I saw characters (through /who queries) that were up to 22. Cap is 50? I guess they just want to be "First!" To each his own.
so...
A well deserved success! Beta was more polished than any beta I've been in and I'm having so much fun!
I would be having fun... if I could bloody log in and play. queue's...
You guys are mentioning that WAR and AOC, just like many other MMOs, had full servers at start just like this. Yes, you guys are right. And you said the population dropped heavily in a month or so. Right again.
But you're forgetting thatthe reason the population dropped is because both games were completely broken, bugged and unfinished. Rift is really far from that, in fact it's the first MMO I played at launch that feel finished in like years. I don't even remeber when was the last time I felt like this, probably when WoW launched. Sorry for comparing, but what can I say? Trion IS giving the same level of treatment and polishing Blizzard gives to their games.
With Blizzard, when you acquire a product, you feel that you gotthe whole thing right there and that they'll just add extras in the future, while other companies you feel that what you're buying is hope that one day they'll fufill all their promises. Rift is the real deal, the game is finished, polished right there, we're not here playing the game and thinking "Well it's like this because the game just launched, in a while they'll give us everything they promised". No everything that's givento us from now on is extra frosting to this delicious cake.
Rejoyce my fellow players. The dark ages of MMOs are nearing it's end. Let Rift be the first beam of light in this void of disrespect we endured for so many years. And let many more come in it's wake.
Its just going to be hectick for the frist month. There will be a drop off. but how much I dont know,

2010 was a bad year for mmos.

Hopefully the head start will spread the players out a little bit and when the game is generally open later it won't be quite as congested as it could be.
Right now the servers are generally busy but things seem to be going well with not very many bugs or server crashes and people seem to be having fun though there are a few WoWholes running around trolling but that is pretty much normal any more in any game of any genre.
As to where the population will end up no one really knows yet though some seem to be certain there is no way to go but down. Personally, my feeling is that the game will be stable and possibly have moderate growth for the next 6 months to a year but after that it will depend up Trion staying on top of the content and any issues that arise and how well other games such as Guild Wars 2 do when they are released.
All in all the start for Rift looks good.
I completely agree! Oh and by the way, anyone else having a bit of problems with logging in? I keep getting Error #2002: You are not authorized to play this game. I have pre-ordered but....TT_TT Can someone help me out?
Life is Fire and Fire is Life.
Server status list:
http://www.riftgame.com/en/status/index.php
US is going to sleep/work while EU is returning home to start gaming.
Whitefall EU PvP is still a nightmare, practically full at all times every day. I'm really glad I switched servers (and even the one I have has 1.5hrs queue time during prime time)
Since the begining of the head start I've only had the patients to wait out the ques 4 times. only because those times the ques were only about 1 to 2 hours. Most servers were full, and Trion announced they would not expandle the sevrer load capabilities, but will add more servers. (and hopfully server transfers. Playtime has been plagued with fighting the hordes to grind. Overall the game is pretty good, but if this keeps up (and the queues will only get worse since game launch is today) then I will be cancelling since by the time I finally logged in last night after work I only had 30mins to play. Which involved competing with the hordes again...
