Lotro 2nd or 3rd try

Been wanting to check this out since release really, I remember picking the game up and initially I was disappointed it wasnt SWG which was my MMO love lol. But since then I've played lots of MMOs and come to accept their differences. Anyways, things have always popped up IRL when I was about to get into it so it never happened. Last time I'm pretty sure I rolled a dwarf, I remember a cave and abit of story and a troll... Got some questions for any kind ppl who know the game, its nothing special its just that I dont have the time to lurk around for info now with kids n all =)

I'm currently playing Rift and while its not the worst pve/questing wise I'm having a hard time getting into the lore and surroundings and such. Will be playing it for the pvp tho. So basically I'm looking for a nice immersive game world for my pve needs.

questions:

- How far has Lotro come in the story/map now? How many expansions and how many are planned(or a qualified guess).?

- How solo friendly is leveling up? I dont mind grouping for sure, but often I have to semi-afk due to kids and I sometimes like to wander off doing my own thing.

- Is the sub and f2p game using the same download? I mean I'm fairly sure it does but would be nice to know. I plan on subbing just to get everything really and money is no issue either so.

- Group content. Will I miss out on lots of cool content leveling up due to low pop zones and not finding groups?

- Player housing. Is it in? Is it instanced?

- What download times am I to expect, I remember getting one of the free trials a couple years back and that was maybe a 16hours download followed by 4-5 hours of patching.

I probably got some more this weekend. thx =)

Mirkwood - i.e. the Fellowship has passed through Moria and Lothlorien, but now nobody's quite sure how they're going to carry the MMORPG side of it on (i.e. where the MMORPG side-action is going to be).  There have been discussions on the forums, but nobody really knows for sure IIRC.  People keep hoping for Rohan, and horse combat capability, but Turbine are being cagey about it (my feeling is they want to do it but have been having technical problems getting horse combat smooth).

It depends on your class.  Some classes are easier to level up solo than others.  e.g. Loremaster is pretty hard going till later levels (though great fun if you like that type of edge-of-seat timing-dependent gameplay), Champion or Hunter are more like easy mode for solo levelling.

    - Is the sub and f2p game using the same download? I mean I'm fairly sure it does but would be nice to know. I plan on subbing just to get everything really and money is no issue either so.

Same download, stuff just "unlocks" when you pay for it in shop or subscribe.

My experience has been that there are always lfg calls on at all times.  It's a fairly popular game.

    - Player housing. Is it in? Is it instanced?

Not sure.  There's definitely instanced guild housing, but never really looked into player housing.

Turbine's downloading system is very slick and fast.

Isengard will be the next area. That is planned for the end of this year.

You should have no real problem leveling just about any class but some will take longer. I have run all classes most to top lvl.

As for groups as has been said you dont tend to get to much of a problem getting groups but until higher lvls you wont really miss much content by not doing group quests.

    Housing is instanced into neighbourhoods.

The official story/books have come along way, if you only did these quests exclusively they would take you days, they are massive, fun, interesting and include good group aspects along the way. Book 1 however can be soloed due to a buff you receieve if you are not in a group. Book 2 will also have this option once update 2 arrives (2-8 weeks)

Very, you can solo all the way to level 65 and most people do, there are group quests available along the way however but finding groups for these can be difficult depending on which server you play, there are however Skirmishes which you can do at any level and at any time in any place (you join from the skirmish panel and once finished you return to where you were when you started it), these can also be solo or group depending on your preference.

Most of the level 65 content however is group based via instances (not including skirmishes)

Yes its the same download, same game same everything except F2P has some restrictions, you can find the comparison here:

    http://www.lotro.com/betasignup/vipchart.html

Possibly yes but in the overall scheme of things, most of the cool content you get at level 65.

    - Player housing. Is it in? Is it instanced?

Yes there is player housing but while it looks pretty and you can choose between 3 themes (Man/Elf/Hobbit) Its very limited, you can only put furniture/trohpies on predefined 'hooks' and the majority of player housing is a glorified vault where you can store 1 or 2 chests (or 3 if you have a personal kinhouse)

    - What download times am I to expect, I remember getting one of the free trials a couple years back and that was maybe a 16hours download followed by 4-5 hours of patching.

The download is pretty good in terms of patch time afterwards, the client seems to be pretty up-to-date but its a pretty large file, it depends on your connection but from personal experience i did get my max download speed.

    1) We're still pretty much at the start of The Two Towers.

So who knows? I figure 1 mini-expansion a year for the next 15 years and the game will finally make it to Mordor. New content has been added at a glacial pace since Mines of Moria...

    2) It's good from 1-35 or so. There is kind of drags until 46 or so. They revamped the Lonelands so it was solo friendly, but the rest of the game hasnt' been made solo friendly

    3) There's only one game, so only one download

    4) Yes. Maybe not cool, but the game definitely punishes soloers. Especially at high levels...

    5) Yes, and it's instanced and pretty much pointless, as you can only decorate about a dozen places on your home.

    6) Dunno, the last time I dowloaded it was 3 years ago when I started playing. But it's a fairly big game - 12 gigs? 15? Not sure...

R.I.P. City of Heroes and my 17 characters there

I'll have to disagree Jeremy, it's a pretty solo friendly game. There is group content but "that's ok".

Otherwise I have mostly soloed from 1 to cap. I'm in the 40's on another alt which was practically all solo with the exception of grouping 3 times with friends.

I think it's an extremely solo friendly game. And, if one wants, there is group content.

if you are saying that everything should be soloable or else it's not solo friendly then I will again disagree. There's group content and solo content and you can get to cap extremely easy with the solo content.

And you are close, the folder is 13.2 gigs.

I would recommend this game to anyone looking for an MMO to play. Having said that, I have just cancelled my subscription. It is active until the end of April but I just can't bring myself to log in anymore. The reason is simple: I hate the deed system. I just got tired of killing hundreds of mobs for one deed or using the same skill over and over again to get a trait. It is a shame because I like the game but can't continue. I know I could just ignore that part of the game but I don't want my toons to be gimped. I might log in one more time to see if the game can reignite something in me because it is cheap and I am in a great kinship.

I don't hate it, myself, but yeah, once this next release is out, Deeds should be next on the "revamp" list.  the upper tier slayer deeds are way too much.

As to the OP, all the questions have been answered correctly, though the argument for soloable or not, I side with Sovrath.  All of Volume I is now soloable.  As someone else stated, some classes are easier than others to solo.  I could skip every group quest and still have more than enough content to get to level 65 without grinds.

I would reccomend this game to everyone. Despite the bogus deed system, the game is great. This game has everything to offer. Its deep but not as deep as some mmos out there. The jobs are well balanced and each one offers a advantage.

But here's an idea, don't kill hundreds and hundreds of mobs to get a deed or constantly monitor one skill to get a trait.

    Just play.

Eventually the deed will be done, especially if you allow yourself skirmishes here and there. Same with using a particular skill.

I'm starting to think that players should never be told that if they kill 1000 orcs or use x skill y times that they will be rewarded. It should all be behind the scenes and after the player unknowingly uses said skill or slays said monster x amount of times, they get a pop-up saying they received x trait or deed.

I've recieved a good many of my traits and deeds this way. Though I will admit that I was weened on Lineage 2 so there is no grind that is daunting to me should I decide to grind out mobs. But I have only done that a few times Most of the times I just get a random pop up saying "congrats, you killed x amount of birds in the shire here is + 1 to something or other".
