MMORPG.com Community Manager recently had the opportunity to sit down and chat with industry veteran and Spacetime Studios developer, Cinco Barnes. Barnes will be speaking at next week's GDC about brining MMOs to the mobile gaming space. Mike and Cinco covered the hows and whys of MMO gaming on the mobile platform in this new interview. Check it out and then leave us your thoughts about MMOs and mobile gaming.
MMORPG.com: Finally, where do you see the mobile MMO space in five years?
Cinco Barnes: I think it’s an excellent question. I think from my perspective I really really earnestly believe that deep but casual multiplayer experiences like the Pocket Legends MMO and other MMOs that Spacetime will be developing, this is obviously going to be considered the first tier, and then beyond, what we expect is much more deeper and richer game mechanisms, game mechanisms that probably reach out in a social fashion, in a physical fashion, in ways that the PC really just simply cannot. /p>

I personally expect the mobile MMORPG market to explode, and soon.
Modern smartphones (such as my beastly Galaxy S ) are more than capable of smooth, engaging 3d gaming.
I personally don't play Pocket Legends, due to the style of the game not fitting my MMORPG tastes. But I do play many other multi-player games on my phone on a daily basis.
The potential of Android, Win 7 based phones, and that other thing that Apple put out (hehehe) are incredible.
Until battery technology gets better, playing games on my phone just takes too much juice. Yeah you could carry a charger around with you all the time, but really I find that rather ridiculous.
I tried Pocket Legends, I was lost right away and there really wasn't anything there to connect me with the game. If an MMO on the smartphone wants to succeed, it's going to be something similar to Dungeon Hunter (Diablo clone). I really want a game to come out on my mobile device that is just that but I can play with a group of people. Perhaps even talk to them over voice... (it is a phone after all).
one of the great title on the mobile world of smartphone!(warning, you might need to bring a spare batery)
+1 for running my battery down on my phone while not using it as a phone o_0
do people actually expect to be able to have a smartphone and USE it as a smartphone without needing to charge every few hours?? Really??
I charge the phone while I sleep. In the car, it's on the dock. At work, it charges in my office. The only time it's not plugged in is while I'm out on foot somewhere, when I'm not playing a game on it anyway. If I'm in a waiting room or something, I have plenty of battery to play for a few hours if needed....and then I am somewhere where I can charge again.
These phones aren't meant to go for days without a charge...this isn't your flip-phone that you might play tetris on, and only charge every three days. This is a little computer that you put in your pocket. A lap-top in your hand. If you're only using it for a phone, you're missing the point.
You wouldn't expect to be able to play for days at a time without charging your Nintendo DS. This is really no different.
Great interview. Really interested in these guys and what they are and can bring to the table.
I was a fairly early adopter of PL on the iOS. It's simply lightyears ahead of the competition in terms of a fully realized MMO on a little damn phone! And it works too, it's a normal level up game that actually is always tweaking and growing so you have that double enjoyment if you do get into it.
My only disappointment and that was after all the superlative work was the PvP initially was lacking in players wanting to actually play and it was v tough to find a way for the gameplay instead of the button mashing to emerge. But maybe faster connections and tighter communities will eventually solve that problem?
I have not played for a while as work travel has disrupted that... so need to see what's new/changed and the number of updates for this fremium title is phenomenal value for your money in a product/gaming-service...
Good to hear they are working on other titles and that they appear to be meeting with success - fully deserved and smartphones tech is making more and more things possible albeit the limiting factor is the small screen and/or touch controls to work with.
Their space shooter in-dev title looks particularly enthralling for a hop on/off type of space shooter........
ah good news just checked their website and it's coming to the mobile:
