I gotta say it, this (for me) is hands down the best mmorpg. I am thinking that it could very well be the game to surpass WoW. I know that some of you will flame me for my opinion but please keep in mind that it is only an opinion. Those of you that will claim it is just another WoW clone, please keep in mind the devs have stated that as with all great MMORPGs they are taking what has made those previous to them great and then building upon that foundation. The Rifts themselves are immense fun and the PVP is also great. There are still some issues (bards are pretty overpowered and I say this knowing that my favorite character thus far is my bard...) I am quickly tiring of the more than once daily patching but at the same time this fills me with the hope and thoughts that maybe this is a sign of a high level of diligence on behalf of the devs that will hopefully continue for a long time. {Mod edit}

I will not flame your opinion, instead i will share mine.
Tried this game and im so glad i was able to get my money back for the pre order. it is just like every other theme park MMO out there. and the PVP is garbage.

Rift is alright. I would not say its the most innovative, or the most creative and here is why.
This game takes everything from every other mmo and has very few things that you can call original, its multi-spec/class system is really a standard system such as wow and many others that have just more room to expand between tree's, cool in its own right but not that innovative. Now alot of people say what about the RIFTS well if you ever played tabula rasa or not It is nearly identical, in Tabula Rasa invasion fleets would land in random spots and rush into towns and encampments conquering the city and it was up to the players to liberate that city so the game could move on all they really did was copy that mechanic and add the public quest reward style system of warhammer online. not saying this is a bad thing, just i hear alot of people saying how original the rifts are which there not really.
PVP from what i have done of it so far is horrible, no real penalty for getting beat in open world pvp and warfronts are just warhammer online with a better graphics engine, i guess this is a matter of personal preferance to see a more pvp intnese game with more of a negative impact for getting killed, what i see happening is like in world of warcraft where after a month no one will really pvp outside of a warfront, and eventually like it is now in world of warcraft barely anyone will pvp open world at all regardless of pvp server or not, which is not a bad thing but if you bought this game for PVP start looking else where its warhammer online with a mix of wow.
this game took what it felt was best from all mmo's and called it rift. not really a bad strategy if you figure " well if this is what everyone wants why not give it to them". I feel most people will enjoy the game and people playing for pvp will quit for the most part. then its sub base will depend on how the end game is if it isnt as well done as wow people will then begin to quit in mass. This game is solid and well polished for the most part considering retail release isnt for a few more days but overall this game is average and will in turn keep an average following, wont be the wow killer.
i wouldnt say its the best MMO out there however, its the best for me. I like it and enjoy it for its gameplay and class custimization. Im enjoying it thus far and Im having a good time with it. Thats all i can say right now.
PvP is garbage in MMOs. full stop. Then again it's my opinion.

I was a Day 1 VIP Beta Tester and through all the betas never got to level 10 so thats tells you what I think about the game. ArcheAge plz save us!
This. I had it preordered via Amazon.com and was able to get into the head start. You still had to put in your cd key after that and I had ordered the boxed version. After playing for a few minutes I canceled my preorder for the very reason typed above. That and I think I really am burnout on MMORPGS as I didn't care I was playing.
The game is polished. I will give it that. I liked the art style and the UI. However its a theme park mmo like all other theme park MMOs out there. Don't be fooled about what you are getting in regard to this game. You are pushed from kill task hub to kill task hub. I refuse to use the word quest anymore in regard to many MMOs as they are not that at all. If you've played World of Warcraft then you've played Rift. The worlds are different, the stories are different, and the enemies are different but it's basically the same game with the addition of "public events" ala Warhammer Online. They took everything that was standard in MMOs and polished them the way Blizzard polished them with WoW.
That's not knocking the game. In my honest opinion this is what Rift is. It might very well do well as a result but if one is looking for anything different then I don't think it's worth playing. At least it isn't to me.
Rift is like driving a KIA or Hyundai.
You know it's a copy of a superior brand wrapped in a shiny coat of hype. You know it is actually inferior. But if you keep telling yourself it's a good car, in your tiny little brain, you will start to believe it actually is even though everyone in the street is making fun of you behind your back.
The only difference here is that Trion is asking FULL PRICE for the Hyundai, which makes it even worse.

I used to have a Honda CRX, Honda makes great cars. They used to have rust issues though, especially accords.
My first impression? This game is RIFT'ing WoW a new one.
If we are gonna do the car analogy route here at least take the time to actually do its right. Say if WoW is considered the mercedes here than Rift would most likely fit into the Buick/Lincoln middle of the line luxury cars. Its not quite up there yet but the quality and comfort are all there.
I enjoy the game. I don't really care much for all the flaming and people bashing it mainly because why should it matter? If you don't like it don't play it. I enjoy sandbox and themepark mmo's, I've been playing Xsyon along with Lineage 2. Then rift headstart started. I pre ordered it without even reading anything about the game. Just to try it. I ended up going to the store the same day and putting the rest of the money down on it. I think it's a superb game, and it's very fun. Sure it didn't innovate much, but whatever, as long as the game is fun, it shouldn't matter what it did different.
I remember when the Honda CRX first came out, we used to laugh at the people who owned them right to thier face.

That's cool, we laugh at every American car ever built and we all drive European or Japanese cars.
And we laugh at all the bailouts you poor saps have to pay for to save your broken US car makers.

Rift is bad because I said so and you paid $49.99, which is clearly overpriced for a computer game that's not even out yet, because I said so.
$50 is so not anything really. Take the lady out to Ted's and its an easy $50 if not more for a single meal. Hell I spend more than that for parking each month and I sure dont get as much entertainment out of that as I did from Rift already in the first 2-3 days of headstart. Maybe you would enjoy a good parking lot for your $50 more though, its possible.
Oh and I dont know about anyone else but I think the car discussion here is far more entertaining than the wha wha mommy mommy talk the rest of you seem to want in this thread.
So anyway, that car company bailout thing, dont you think it would have been better to use that money to give like a $5000 incentive to buy a BWM or Mercedes or Mini or something.
(for those thinging I'm highjacking the thread - please note I did discuss the topic in my second sentance where I said my impression of the game)
My friend is a mechanic, car mechanic. I used to work on cars too but gave up because I got sick. SO I did mechanical engineering for a few years.
So anyway,
All those new cars powered by electric motors, or hybrids, ..... you can't access a lot of parts anymore. The battery and the whole system is usually locked down. Once it breaks they just put a new battery and system in. I wonder how many car mechanics are going to be without a job in a few years time....
No kidding, I want to know how much people are going to enjoy the bill of that fix too. No longer a $4 PCV valve fix, no, now it will be a $6000 repair bill. And what happens when the warranty runs out, are they going to become dispoable? And what when they are? We can't put our regular car battery in the waste system, who is going to control the haz-waste side of all these hybrid/electrical cars when they go junkyard? I wish I knew that answer right there because thats the next stock to buy now.
Rift is ZZZZZZ
it has everything, instanced PvP, open world PvP, raiding, instances, quests, world objectives, etc...but it doesnt focus or do a particular job at any of them.
In short its going down the same road as every other MMO in the last 5 years, afraid to do something special that a different style of players may not like (hey, you're allowed to change more than a flagging rule on PvP vs PvE servers!!).
So Rift has many things to do but they all suck compared to doing the same in other, older games. But Rift is essentially WoW in a change of scenery, I think that might be enough for it to have some success.
Boring Rift OBT made me finally break down and buy a Korean TERA account, having about 10x as much fun.

Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009.....
In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.
